Mathews 1955 Remembering back to the first year the school opened, I was in the 2nd Grade and there were only three classrooms used out of the four and the three teachers who taught were Sister Ida Joseph, Sister Gerald Cecilia, and Sister Marie Antoinette the principal who were Dominicans from Adrian, Michigan. I also was in the First Communion Class that very 1st Year. The first year I had three older siblings who were Jim 8th Grade, Tom 6th Grade and Kathy 4th Grade. Later three younger siblings completed grade school at St. Antoninum Bob (Beaver) 1957, Marty 1959 and David 1960. Prior to coming to St. Antoninius I attended Mother of Mercy School in Westwood.

Going through grade school with another class in the room kind of got you ready for the next grade. I think it was unheard of anyone failing a grade at that time.

We were like a small neighborhood school and the students were more like family. The nuns were very caring except for the nun that taught part of my 5th Grade who was replaced for the second semester. Can't remember her name. I do remember her taking Art Lubbe and reprimending him by the coat lockers at the back of the classroom. I think Art's family had her replaced.

8th Grade was a difficult year being that my mother died in September, but being with my ST. Antoninus family and Sister Norita Marie the principal helped to make things less difficult.

After 8th Grade I attended The School of the Brown County Ursulines in St. Martin, Ohio for two years and then attended Seton High School where I graduated in 1959. After high school I attented Campbell Business College where I was a graduate.

I was married to George Burkley for 27 years and we had three children Margaret, George III and Marijane. In 1992 I married Bob Beck. Between us we have 8 children. I have 7 precious grandchildren, Matthew 21, Maggie 17 belonging to Margaret and Charlie 15 and Alison 11 belonging to George III and Louie 14, Max 10 and Caroline 5 belonging to Marijane. My precious Alison is a Leukemia survivor with her brother Charlie being a perfect match for her bone marrow transplant. My husband Bob has 18 grandchildren and 4 great grandchildren. So between us we have quite a family.

My husband is retired from the Cincinnati Enquirer where he worked all of his life except for 2 years in the military and I currently work for Towne Properties Home Office in Mt. Adams where I have been for 12 years.

I was very blessed to attend such a unique school.

Stan

Juergens

1955 After graduation from St. Antoninus and Elder, I joined the US Air Force for 4 years. Following discharge, I went to Villa Madonna College in Covington and met my future wife Kathy Malone from northern Kentucky. We were married in 1967, had three children with one on the way by 1976 when I graduated from XU. During my work career I have worked for 3 different companies: Interchemical Corporation, Champion Paper, and Procter & Gamble. After 6 kids and 21 years with P&G, I finally retired. But I am back working at P&G as a contractor because I really respect and appreciate the P&G people.

As I recall there were only about 10 or 12 of us 8th graders in my St. Antoninus graduating class. Sr. Marie Antoinette was our 7th and 8th grade teacher (we had a combined 7th and 8th grade class in one classroom). We had classrooms in a large white 4-classroom school building next to the old parish church. We went to mass every morning. Fr. Goeckler was our pastor and lived in a large house on Julmar on the other side of Linneman. We were a fairly close class, but I believe most of my classmates went to St. X and Mercy so I lost contact with them.

Currently, Kathy and I have 6 grandchildren, 4 in the area, and 2 in Columbia, SC. One of our children is a stay-at-home mom, one is Director of Innovation and Prototype Development for RPI Graphic, one is a Manager at P&G, one is a COP in Columbia, SC, one has just completed a BA in Middle School Education at UC and is working on an MEd, and our youngest works with a steel grating manufacturer.
