Usual Sunday Mass Attended______________

Dear Parishioners,

This week I wish to highlight the work of the Finance Council and Worship Commission which recently met in January.  Both groups, like other advisory groups in the parish, are to evaluate and recommend matters in their respective areas.  The Finance Council is mandated for every parish by the Code of Canon law.  Its responsibility is to oversee the temporal affairs of our parish.  The council meets quarterly to review income and expenses.  I am grateful to our Business Manager, Peggy James, and our bookkeeper, Darlene Carovillano, for their diligence and to the members of the Finance Council for their oversight.

The Worship Commission, which also meets quarterly, reviewed the Year of the Eucharist, and the Advent/Christmas Liturgies and discussed the season of Lent, Holy Week, the Triduum (Holy Thursday, Good Friday and Holy Saturday) as well as the Parish Mission, Lenten devotions, and Easter Vespers in the neighborhoods.  I am likewise grateful to Deacon Bob Schroeder, who chairs the Commission and to all of its members who help our parish to render our Lord fitting worship.

Both the Finance Council and Worship Commission help to make St. Antoninus the great parish that it is.

I will be visiting my friend, Fr. Bruno Healy, a priest of the Archdiocese of Westminster (i.e. London, England) from February 17 to February 25.  Fr. Healy is a pioneer of urban monasticism and over the years I have helped him and some other monastic communities with their canonical concerns.

Fr. Christopher R. Armstrong

MASSES OF CHRISTIAN BURIAL have been offered for Fr. Joseph Urbain and for Helen Mueller.  Please keep them and their families in your prayers.

MARCH MISSION: Fr. Burger will preach our parish mission the Tuesdays of March 7, 14, 21 and 28th, at 7:30 PM.  Please plan to attend.

Norm Burnworth representing Diocesan Publications (our bulletin publisher) will be at the parish soon.  He will be renewing present advertisements and seeking new ones.  If interested, please call the parish office at 922-5400.  We feel this is an excellent service and that the sponsors get good coverage with their ads.  Thanks to you and Diocesan Publications, the bulletin is published weekly at no cost to the parish.

FROM OUR PRINCIPAL
JIM LEISRING

Undoubtedly some of you are reading the articles about the plan Ohio has set forth for "vouchers".  Called the "Ed Choice" program, public school students from schools in "academic emergency" for the past three years can apply to non-public schools.  The non-public school can exercise its own acceptance policies (so long as they are not discriminatory) as well as its own dismissal procedures.  Only after the student is accepted in a non-public school will the state pay the tuition - up to $4,250.00. The school must agree to administer the state required proficiency test to these students as well as agree to meet all other required state standards.  St. Antoninus School meets all these standards as evidenced by our being accredited by the OCSAA (Ohio Catholic School Accreditation Assoc.).  The nearest public school from which students might apply would be Carson Elementary (Price Hill).  I'm certain all stakeholders will be keeping a close eye on how this program takes shape.

Also, sixteen and seventeen year-olds will be allowed to participate provided a parent comes with them. This will be a good opportunity for high school service hours. A letter from Ron Haft

to the  parishioners

of St. Antoninus Parish

On Wednesday February 1, 2006 I received formal approval to be ordained a deacon for the Archdiocese of Cincinnati, along with Tom McCarthy, Rey Taylor, and Zach Weber. This is an important step in the journey toward priesthood. The Ordination Mass will take place on Saturday April 29, 2006 at the Cathedral of St. Peter In Chains, and is open to the public. Bishop Moeddel will be the ordaining prelate. I will serve as a deacon at the 4:30 PM Mass on Saturday April 29, 2006, here at St. Antoninus.

A deacon is permitted to do the following things: baptize, witness a marriage on behalf of the Church, preach at Mass with permission of the local bishop (which I will have), bless people and objects within a liturgical celebration, preside at funeral services, proclaim the Gospel at Mass, lead Holy Hours and give Benediction.

I wish to thank the entire parish for the great support they gave me during my internship period at St. Antoninus. I have learned a great deal and look forward to serving as a deacon for the first time at St. Antoninus. During the summer months I will live at St. Antoninus and continue to serve the parish while I prepare for ordination to the priesthood.

In closing I want to say “Thank You” once again. And may God continue to bless Saint Antoninus Parish.

Ron Haft
