ADULT EDUCATION

Monday Evenings, Adult Bible Study from 7:00 to 8:00p.m. in the school library.

Dear Parishioners,

I hope you were as edified as I was by our Forty Hours Devotions.  I am particularly grateful to all those who kept vigil.  I believe it will draw down great blessings upon our parish.  I am particularly hopeful that more and more parishioners will take the obligation to attend Mass every Sunday even more seriously and devoutly.  The Forty Hours Devotion reminds us that the Eucharist is the “source and summit of Christian life”.

+

I am grateful for all of the members of the Parish Council, Finance Council, Education Commission and other parishioners who attended the Deanery meetings on the future of Catholic Education.  The meetings provided the “state of the question”.  Recommendations will be tabulated and shared as we continue our discussion and consider next steps.

+

Thanks to Peter Puttmann who made the poles for the new canopy for the Blessed Sacrament processions.

--- Rev. Christopher R. Armstrong

LENTEN REMINDERS

FAST AND ABSTINENCE

Ash Wednesday, February 21 and Good Friday, April 6, are days of abstinence from meat and also days of fast, that is, limited to single full meal.  With regard to Good Friday, the teaching of the Second Vatican Council should be recalled.

Let the paschal fast be kept sacred.  Let it be celebrated everywhere on Good Friday and, where possible, prolonged throughout Holy Saturday, so that the joys of the Sunday of the Resurrection may be attained with uplifted and clear mind (Constitution on the Liturgy, No.110).  The other Fridays of the season of Lent are days of abstinence from meat.  The law of abstinence binds all Catholics 14 years and older.  The law of fasting binds all Catholics from their 18th birthday until their 59th birthday (Canons 97 and 1252).

With regard to the obligatory days listed above, there are frequent questions about the degree of seriousness of the matter.  The teaching of Pope John Paul II may be simply paraphrased:  the obligation to do penance is a serious one; the obligation to observe, as a whole or “substantially”, the penitential days specified by the Church is also serious.  No one should be scrupulous in this regard; failure to observe an individual day of penance is not considered serious.

People should seek to do more rather than less.  Fast and abstinence on the days prescribed should be considered a minimum response to the Lord’s call to penance and conversion.

FR. TIM SCHEHR will present The Psalms on the Wednesdays of Lent; March 7, 14, 21 and 28 at 7:00 PM in the St. Antoninus undercroft.  He is an excellent teacher.  Please plan to make the series part of your Lenten preparation for Easter.

THE 2007 GOLDEN WEDDING ANNIVERSARY MASS at Saint Peter in Chains Cathedral will be on Saturday, May 5th, at 2:00 PM.  Archbishop Daniel E. Pilarczyk will be the principal celebrant.  Please call the rectory by March 9th, with your name, spouse’s name, address and the date you were married.

25th, 50th, 60th, 70th, and 75th YEAR WEDDING ANNIVERSARY COUPLES should call the rectory office at 922-5400 from 8 AM to 3 PM, Monday thru Friday by March 9TH.  Leave your name, spouse’s name, address, and the date you were married.

HOLY SPIRIT PRAYER GROUP

In January 2005, at the request of Pope John Paul II, Father John Corapi made a special recorded series entitled “The Power of the Eucharist”. We are fortunate to have the first of six talks, “Eucharist: Mystery of Light”.  It is a powerful indictment of today’s culture which needs salvation through faith in Christ and His precious gift to us.  Hear it in chapel on Tuesday at 7:30 PM.

REMEMBER THE POOR

Please use the poor boxes at the church entrances for your contributions to our St. Vincent de Paul ministry to assist the poor and needy in our area.

ADULT SOCIAL GROUP

Luncheon on Monday, February 12th.  Plan for the lunch on Monday, March 12th.  Reservations are due on Wednesday, March 7th.  Send payment of $8.00 per person in an envelope marked Adult Social Group in the rectory mailbox or drop in the collection basket.  Steering committee will meet on March 2, at 1 PM in the Holy Family Room.  NO luncheon on Easter Monday, April 9th.

ST. ANTONINUS PARISH WAYS AND MEANS COMMISSION “NITE AT THE RACES” MONTE CARLO will be on Saturday, February 17, starting at 7 PM. $10.00 per person includes beer, snacks, hot food, and soft drinks. To volunteer and answer to questions, call Doug Rolfes at 295-9040 or 451-4800.  Remember to send in your  Split-the-Pot tickets now.

FROM MR. JACK COREY, PRINCIPAL

Dear Parishioners:

Last week’s kindergarten registration was a success with 47 students registering for kindergarten.  Our education commission meets after the deadline for this article, but we will be discussing when to start a wait list for kindergarten.  If you know someone who is considering our school for their kindergarten child, please have them call the office as soon as possible.  Today (Sunday), we are opening registration for all new students after each Mass.

As a principal, I hear almost exclusively from those parents who have chosen to send their children to St. Antoninus Parish School.  What I do not hear is why some parents choose other alternatives.  If for some reason you are a parishioner who has questions about our academic program, tuition, or other concerns, I invite you to come in and talk to me, email me at corey@saintantoninus.org, or call me at 922-2500.

If all of the photos have been taken by the time you come to Mass next Sunday, please remember in your prayers all of the candidates from our parish.
