Dear Parishioners,

It has been said that today’s Gospel (LK 15), “The Parable of the Prodigal Son” is one of the greatest short stories ever told.  It has also been said that it is mistitled.  Instead it should be known as the “Parable of the        Merciful Father” who is willing to forgive both his sons: the younger son who dissipates his father’s fortune and the older son who has hardened his heart toward him and his brother.  For my part, it reminds me of the woefully neglected sacrament of penance.  Why don’t people go to confession more often, I ask myself.  The Church reminds us of its necessity in Canon 989: “After having attained the age of discretion, each of the faithful is bound by an obligation to confess serious sins at least once a year.”

Even for venial sins: “it is to be recommended to the Christian faithful that venial sins also be confessed (Canon 988.2).  And here’s why according to St. Augustine:

“While he is in the flesh, man cannot help but have at least some light sins.  But do not despise these sins which we call “light”:  if you take them for light when you weigh them, tremble when you count them.  A number of light objects makes a great mass; a number of drops fill a river; a number of grains make a heap.  What then is our hope? Above all, confession…”

The Catechism of the Catholic Church (1864) drives the point home:

“Therefore I tell you, every sin and blasphemy will be forgiven men, but the blasphemy against the Spirit will not be forgiven.”  There are no limits to the mercy of God, but anyone who deliberately refuses to repent and accept His mercy, rejects the forgiveness of his sins and the salvation offered by the Holy Spirit.  Such hardness of heart can lead to final impenitence and eternal loss.”
