Dear Parishioners,

When I was studying spiritual direction, our professor told us about a spiritual exercise based on the mystery of the Ascension.  He told directees who were leaving a job or ministry to go up the Mt. of Olives with Jesus at His Ascension.  They were to look back at their job or ministry as Jesus might have looked back on His public ministry.  Such a regard has two elements: 1) thanksgiving for all that was accomplished; 2) trust that God’s Providence will bring it to completion.  Imagine Jesus giving thanks to His Father for the accomplishment of His will: our salvation.  Imagine the profound trust Jesus has in us that He leaves His Church – “the instrument of peace and the sign of unity” – in our hands.  Who can not be filled with wonder and awe at the Lord’s Ascension!

--- Rev. Christopher R. Armstrong

PAYING IT FORWARD

Help your parish avoid

the annual “summer slump”.

Every summer the offering drops when parishioners are out of town for vacation, and for most folks, if we aren’t present at Mass, obviously we aren’t there to put our offertory in the basket.  In the meantime, the bills and necessary expenses to carry on the parish ministry continue during the summer and must be paid.

The solution!  You plan ahead for your vacation and make reservations and send deposits for your hotel and other accommodations.  In the same way, why not put the offering for the weeks you will be away in the offertory basket before you leave.  Then you can enjoy your vacation with the clear conscience that the mission and ministry of the parish can continue unhindered as you enjoy your time of relaxation.

The Challenge and Joy of Being an Adult Catholic What does adult Catholic faith imply? What characterizes an adult understanding of the Church? What difference does my being Catholic make in my family, my neighborhood and my society? Join Srs. Ann Walters, OP and Maria Beesing, OP June 22-24 as they lead retreatants through an understanding of their baptismal and prophetic roles in the Church and world today.

The Jesuit Spiritual Center will host a Father/Son Retreat June 9, with a focus on Luke 15. Retreatants will be asked to listen to this parable as the original audience might have listened to it, with the goal of gaining an enriched perspective of the good news of Jesus.

What is a Spiritual Bouquet?  A spiritual bouquet is a gift of prayers or certain devotional acts on behalf of another person, as in honor of a special occasion or in memoriam. You choose what prayers you would like to offer and how many. You do not have to say them right then and there, but can say them when you are able.  For example, you may choose to say a certain number of Our Father’s or Hail Mary’s or both, or you may choose to offer up a Holy Hour(s) or your Masses or a certain number of Rosaries. It is totally up to you and it is totally anonymous. We will then compile the prayers and offerings and have it engraved on a plaque which Fr. Armstrong will present to Fr. Ron Haft on May 27th.  We hope everyone will make some contribution; supporting Fr. Ron with our special prayers and offerings as he starts his life as a priest.
