If the Solemnity of the Ascension marks the apostles’ nine days of praise in the upper room where they are told to await the Holy Spirit, then the Solemnity of Pentecost moves them from that upper room to preach the good news. To this day, the Church continues to oscillate between praise and preaching. Recently, our seventh and eighth grade students participated in a day of renewal sponsored by the National Evangelization Team (NET) a group of young people who give up a year or two of their lives to share the gospel with their fellow Catholics. In addition, I am on the mailing list for the newsletters for our local Catholic High Schools. They have an impressive array of mission activities throughout the summer. Closer to home, we recently heard from a former parishioner, Pat Duffy, about his missionary work in Nicaragua; as a parish we continue our contacts with a mission in Louise, KY and with Habitat for Humanity; and not to be forgotten are a fair number of our parishioners who have or had missionary experiences of their own. All of the above fills me with praise and gratitude because from Pentecost down to our own day “…we hear them speaking in our own tongues of the mighty acts of God.” + Please wear some RED for the Solemnity of Pentecost as a sign that we are a parish on fire with the love of the Holy Spirit. --- Rev. Christopher R. Armstrong

Memorial Day is when America pauses to honor those in the armed services who are protecting our nation and veterans. We offer our heartfelt prayers of gratitude for their courage, sacrifice and their faithful fulfillment of their civic duty with honor and integrity. We are inspired by people with these qualities, hoping to emulate them in our own Catholic vocation: “The love of God compels me.” (2 Corinthians). Pat, a volunteer at a pregnancy center, told me, “I have always wondered what I would have done in World War II to stop the holocaust.” Well, a holocaust in far greater magnitude is happening EVERY day in this country (4000 innocent children are killed in USA every day through abortion). I asked myself, “are you doing anything about it, or are you ignoring it by saying to yourself, it's the law of the land, there is nothing I can do.” I used to think that way, but now I believe this is wrong thinking. Reprioritizing our lives is a beginning. Volunteer Beth, says: “I remind myself, it is not just a ‘nice idea’ to be involved in protecting the unborn and their parents, and it is our duty. Let us resolve to “stand up for God’s gift of LIFE” by joining other families in the Walk the Bridge for Life, June 3, 2-3 pm; begins at Peace Bell in Newport, KY. See www.WalktheBridge.com . God is good! Jane Hoffman, St.Antoninus Pro-Life/Pro-Family Committee |
