THANK YOU to Hofmeyer & Sons

for advertising in our bulletin.

Dear Parishioners,

In popular piety, the month of August is devoted to the Most Holy Eucharist. Therefore, it is worth considering the liturgical act of receiving Holy Communion.  First, I would like to say that we "receive" communion and not merely "take" It; to my way of thinking "receive" implies a gift freely given; "take" implies that we have a right to it.  We have no "right" to anything the Lord has done for us; He laid down his life freely which he left us as a memorial in the Eucharist; no one took it from him (see John 10:18).  Second, among other things, the Code of Canon law defines "communion" as sharing in the one faith, sacraments and ecclesiastical governance (see Canon 205).  That, in part, explains why we receive communion from another and not merely help ourselves to It.  Every five years, a bishop goes to Rome to express his communion with the Pope.  Every year, at the Chrism Mass, priests renew their communion with the diocesan bishop.  At every Mass, the priest receives first in order to complete the Sacrifice of the Mass; in turn, the other ministers receive from him and then, the faithful from them.  In that way, we express liturgically what it means to be in "holy communion": faith (expressed in the Creed), sacraments (all seven of them) and ecclesiastical governance (recognize the headship of the Pope and our archbishop).  Third, holy communion is a gift of the Holy Spirit to His Church to make us one in mind and heart (Acts 4:32) As St. Augustine urged his hearers on the Eucharist, may we became what we receive: Holy Communion.

FROM OUR PRINCIPAL, MR. JACK COREY

Dear Parishioners,

Our school office is open for regular hours now from 7:30AM -2:30PM.

Over the summer we made a couple of changes to our faculty.  In July, we hired Mrs. Joyce Lewis for our newly created Spanish position.  Joyce has had experience teaching English in Eastern Europe, English as a Second Language in the state of Washington, and most recently Spanish at Mercy High School.  This summer Mr. Deimling was offered a position closer to home that allowed him to take his son to work with him.  We wish Mr. Deimling the best.  At press time we were still interviewing candidates to fill the P.E. vacancy.

Important dates this week are Tuesday, the 21st, for the first all faculty meeting of the year.  We will have an all day in-service.  On the 22nd at 9:00am we have our orientation for kindergarteners, 1st graders, and any other students new to St. Antoninus.  Thursday, August 23rd, is our first day of school.

As we prepare to start school please keep us in your prayers.

PTO PRESIDENTS’ REPORT:

We would like to thank everyone for their time and support during the 2006-2007 school year.  The Parent Teacher Organization (PTO) was able to contribute a great deal of financial support to our School and Parish.  Our two largest fundraisers, the Magazine Drive and Jog-A-Thon (with Mr. Corey receiving his “summer hairdo”), jointly raised more than $43,000.

PTO sponsored the annual Family Fun Night, a New Year’s Eve Party, the Olympic Day festivities for our students, contributed funds to the tuition assistance program, and the parish picnic.  We purchased furniture for a second computer lab, books for the school library, and other items for our parish school.  We assist with funding for the school technology program, sponsored field trips for the students, and provided training and supply money to our teachers, as well as copier subsidy monies, flowers for some special occasions in our Church, and fulfilled other financial obligations and requests.

Our membership provided hundreds of volunteer hours to our church and school which included lunchroom and playground duty, the Everybody Counts Program, Art Programs, Grandparents Day, our School Open House, St. Antoninus Feast Day commemoration, and set/costume design for our school Christmas and Spring shows. We are deeply indebted to all our volunteers and credit them all for our many successes.

We welcome Maria Allen and Joan Berning as Co-Presidents of PTO for the 2007-2008 school year.  They are joined by Co-Treasurers, Gwen Bender and Patti Brunst, and Lisa Reiter as Secretary.  Currently, our Vice Presidency positions are still vacant; we hope someone will step forward to offer their time and talent by assuming these positions.

Again, thank you for your support during the past year.  It has been our pleasure to serve the St. Antoninus community.

Patti Brunst and Lisa Egner, Co-Presidents, 06-07

The St. Antoninus PTO (Parent Teacher Organization) currently has the Vice-President position open on the PTO Board. Anyone interested in this position, please contact Maria Allen at 922-2493 or Joan Berning at 451-2427. This can be filled by 1 or 2 adults. The PTO is a vital part of the St. Antoninus community. Please consider volunteering to take a more active role in your PTO. Thank you.
