In traditional piety, August is devoted to the Most Holy Eucharist. I have been thinking about Eucharistic hymns and the influence of music in our lives. The other day, I was at a stoplight and heard the driving rhythms of rap music in the car next to mine. Quite frankly, I was shocked at the lyrics which I heard and I wondered how listening to such music shapes so many lives, especially of young people. I recalled, by contrast, a story Msgr. Kennedy told me. He entered the seminary as a freshman in high school. Ever since that day he had recited the Eucharistic hymn "Adoro Te Devote" after he received Holy Communion. That would have been nearly 70 years of near daily recitation. I often wondered how that act of piety shaped Msgr. Kennedy's life. I do know that after a serious operation (he had several in the three and half years we lived together!) I found him joining me for the early morning parish Mass. I was surprised and he said: "I wanted to show the people just how important the Mass is." It left a deep impression on me since I was one of the few people who knew of his prayer after Communion and his heroic determination. Similarly, I recall hearing for the first time, "Gift of Finest Wheat," the official hymn commissioned for the International Eucharistic Congress held in Philadelphia in 1976. After the hymns for Corpus Christi composed by St. Thomas Aquinas, it remains one of my favorite Eucharistic hymns especially the verse:" The mystr'y of your Presence, Lord, no mortal tongue can tell/Whom all the world can not contain comes in our hearts to dwell." What would it be like to live in a world where the driving rhythms were Eucharistic hymns? What kind of people would we be?! (This also gives me a chance to thank all of our musicians who help us to lift our minds and hearts to the Lord by the gift of their song.) +++
This week, we begin to replace the carpet in church. After consultation with the Building and Grounds Committee, the Finance Council and the Parish Council, it was determined that after the windows had been replaced it would be a good idea to replace the carpet. Of course, we regret any inconvenience this may cause, but the end result hopefully will be worth it. JP Flooring Systems is doing the necessary floor repairs and installation. |

On Saturday, August 18 the Building and Grounds
Committee and their helpers cleaned up the parish plant
in preparation for the opening of School. I am grateful
for all that they do. Also, throughout the summer,
various parishioners would stop by and weed, water or
dead-head the flowers etc. and I want to thank them
for their ever watchful care of our parish grounds. As
I have said before, please take some time to appreciate
our facilities and thank God for this little bit of Paradise
we call St. Antoninus Parish.

HOLY SPIRIT PRAYER GROUP
So many of us tend to rattle off the “Our Father”
without thought. Yet Jesus taught it as the perfect
prayer. And it does contain every element we need in
addressing the Father. On Tuesday, Ben Klaene, in
his “Reflections on the Our Father” talk gives much
thought to its beauty. Using scripture and the
catechism and his own discernment he will lead us
into deeper appreciation for “The Lord’s Prayer”,
in the chapel at 7:30 PM
LADIES FELLOWSHIP DAY on Saturday, November 17th, from 8AM to 3PM. More info and reservations forms will be available soon! |
FROM OUR PRINCIPAL, MR. JACK COREY
Dear Parishioners, Welcome back to all our students! This past Thursday we opened our doors to open the 2007-2008 school year. As mentioned in last week’s bulletin, we needed to hire a new P.E. teacher. While the talent pool was very deep, we selected Craig Eckstein as our new teacher. Mr. Eckstein grew up in Groesbeck where he attended St. Ann School and Colerain High School. Feel free to stop in and say hello to all our new faces this year. While we work for academic excellence, we never forget that our primary purpose is to educate our students in the Catholic faith. With that in mind we, both the faculty and our Education Commission, will be reading and discussing the book Catholic from the Inside Out. This book will help us evaluate where we are as a Catholic school. Please feel free to join us at our first school Mass this Friday at 8:00 a.m. Having other parishioners attend helps reinforce to our students the importance of the Mass.
YOUTH CLUB SIGN-UPS for all Confirmed Junior High and High School parishioners will be after all Masses on August 25 and 26. Membership fee is $10. PARENT MEETING FOR YOUTH CLUB will be on Wednesday, August 29 at 7PM in the undercroft.
VOLLEYBALL SIGNUPS for girls in the 4th grade and up, who have not yet signed up, please notify Jenny Allison at jallison@cinci.rr.com or Mary Nie at 451-4490. Coaches are still needed.
THE ST. ANTONINUS PTO (Parent Teacher Organization) currently has the Vice President position open on the PTO Board. Anyone interested in this position, please call Maria Allen at 922-2493 or Joan Berning at 451-2427. This can be filled by 1 or 2 adults. Please consider volunteering to take a more active role in your PTO. Thank you.
PTO MAGAZINE DRIVE will be held August 31 thru September 12. The money raised from this event helps to fund many wonderful things that PTO does for our school and church. If you have a renewal subscription or a new subscription call Michelle Moore at 347-0951. Thank you. |

Earlier this year (see www.saintantoninus.org 4/1/07) I wrote to you concerning the importance of witnessing to the truth of abortion when we share actual pictures of children who have been willfully killed in abortion. These tragic graphic pictures are in front of the benign appearing Planned Parenthood (the nation’s largest, deadliest provider for the abortion industry), truth displayed by dedicated, pro life sidewalk counselors. Just last week at a local pro life pregnancy center, a client told me, “Thank God that man was there, outside Planned Parenthood, with those pictures! I found out I was expecting twins…thought I couldn’t deal with twins so I actually had made an abortion appointment at Planned Parenthood!” Thank God she did listen to that man and took his handout materials and wisely followed his suggestion to visit a local pregnancy center. Now, she beamed as she brought in her gurgling 7 month old son and daughter. “Wanted you to see my joys in life!” As God would have it, within an hour a client came in with her beautiful 2½ year old brown-eyed daughter, Sarah. This Mother and Dad had been through our parenting classes preparing for Sarah’s birth. “You know I had an abortion all set at Planned Parenthood but thank God there was that man outside and I saw those pictures.” He encouraged me, “Please, don’t go in there. Don’t do this to your baby and yourselves.” Real stories of grateful families who were shown the truth and who found support. Those who want those pictures to be removed from the sidewalk should speak with the spared children (some now in the their 30’s themselves). Listen to the voices of these children and their parents: “Thank God that man with those photos was there…thank God.” Jesus teaches us, “You shall know the truth and the truth shall make you free.” (John 8: 31-32). Make a difference: plan to join our parish for Mass at Holy Name on Auburn Ave then the rosary walk to Planned Parenthood (8 am on Sept. 22). Check out: www.all.org/stopp God is good! Could you spare 2 hours once a year in order to pray for an end to abortion? "Helpers of God's Precious Infants" is the title chosen by pro-life people who gather for Mass and a rosary procession to Planned Parenthood abortion clinic each Saturday morning at Holy Name Church on Auburn Ave, (near the corner of McMillan Ave.) Every parish in this city is asked to choose one Saturday a year to participate in this prayerful, peaceful effort. St. Antoninus' date is SATURDAY, SEPTEMBER 22. Plan now to participate. Prayer is our most effective weapon in fighting this evil. Mass is at 8 am, followed by the rosary procession, ending at the church about 9:45 am. If you wish to carpool, gather in the St. A parking lot by 7:15 am. Those driving on their own will find plenty of parking at Holy Name Church. For more info, call 922-0348 or 922-7231

RE: Parish Leadership Night Monday, August 27, 2007, 7:30 PM St. Antoninus Church Undercroft
Last winter, Principal Jack Corey, Deacon Bob Schroeder and I attended “Parish Evaluation: A Few Commandments for Catholic Parishes.” Happily, the parish has already been doing much of what had been suggested but one idea seemed to garner our attention: A parish leadership night. The format will be fairly simple. The meeting will start with a brief overview by Fr. Armstrong at 7:30 PM. The Parish Council Representative will meet with his or her assigned group at 8PM and conclude no later than 9 PM. Then, at 9PM, members of Parish Council will meet for reports and a brief evaluation. This meeting will conclude at 9:30PM. Because of the nature of their organization and their meetings, I have divided my requests into the following attendees. I would ask the chairs of each group to notify their membership.
All officers and members, elected, appointed or ex-officio: Bldg. & Grounds Committee Education Commission Finance Council Parish Council Worship Commission
All officers only: Adult Social Group Athletic Club Youth Group Babysitting 9:30 PM Sunday Mass Bereavement Boy Scouts
Cub Scouts Girl Scouts Holy Spirit Prayer Group Parent-Teacher Org. Pro-Life, Pro-Family Commission Sacristan/Marthas St. Vincent de Paul Society Vocations Committee Ways and Means Commission
Please make every effort to attend this meeting because you help to make Saint Antoninus the wonderful parish it is.
Sincerely Yours in Christ, Rev. Christopher R. Armstrong
