Dear Parishioners,

As you read this bulletin, I am at the Shrine of Our lady of Lourdes, France, with the other pilgrims of our group.  I was at this Shrine as a seminarian 30 years ago.  It is with great joy that I will be there again. When Our Lady appeared to St. Bernadette, she urged prayer and penance for poor sinners, to heal our souls.  To underscore the urgency of her message and to get our attention, a miraculous spring of healing waters appeared to heal our bodies.  Its appearance confounded geologists who said it was impossible that such a spring should arise from such a rock.  But it did.  It calls to mind the words of  Franz Werfel  by which he began his book on Lourdes, The Song of Bernadette, with the powerful sentence: "To those who believe no explanation is necessary; to those who do not believe, no explanation is possible."  Since, I am (will be) at Lourdes on Sunday and since it is my great privilege and duty to offer Mass each Sunday for the parishioners of St. Antoninus, I will remember all of you and ask Our Lady to intercede for you and to heal whatever is in need of healing.

+++

I would like to thank all those parishioners who offered me their kind words and prayerful support in regard to my parents who are now both living in a retirement community in Kettering, my home town.  From the beginning of this year, my family was in turmoil due to my parents' health: my Mom (85) broke her leg; my Dad (89) needed to be hospitalized; finally, my Mom was diagnosed with Alzheimer's disease.  Our home of 52 years is now empty. But I would like to think our hearts are full of love and fond memories. Once more, I thank you for your support and prayers

MASS OF CHRISTIAN BURIAL was offered for Joseph J. Nolan.  Please keep him and his family in your prayers.

FROM OUR PRINCIPAL, MR. JACK COREY

Dear Parishioners,

About two weeks ago, a small group of parishioners met to help us evaluate our school.  This evaluation will be of St. Antoninus as a Catholic school, not just as another educational institution.  As part of this process we are reading the book Catholic from the Inside Out, Evangelizing the Culture of Our Parish School.  This book is also being read by our Education Commission and our faculty.

If you or any other parishioners are interested in reading the book and giving some feedback, we are posting a few questions on our website.  Deacon Schroeder has a few copies of the book left, on a first come, first serve basis.  If you do request a book, we just ask that you answer the on-line questions for us.

St. Antoninus Tuition Assistance Program donation request:  Christ has called us to care for each other.  To answer that call, St. Antoninus has developed a Tuition Assistance Program, supported by parishioners to help fellow parishioners pay their tuition.  TAP is also supported by funds from PTO.  Tuition assistance is provided 3 times a year to school families that are having financial hardship and apply for assistance. This is different than “Parish School Support” or the School Endowment in that the TAP donation directly pays the families’ current year school tuition bills.  Please pray for its success.

Tuition Assistance Applications are available for families having financial hardship this current 07-08 school year.  In-parish school families with children in grades 1-8 may apply for assistance to offset part of their tuition.  Applications must be received in the school or parish office by Friday, September 28, 2007.  Awards will be made in early October.

A NOTE FROM OUR

SEMINARIAN INTERN, DAVID ENDRES

Many may wonder what I as a “seminarian intern” will do with my time.  During the next year I will take a break from formal “classroom” studies at the seminary to focus on experiencing parish life.  I will live with the priests, take part in daily Mass and devotions, and work alongside the staff, teachers, and volunteers of the parish.  Fr. Armstrong has also asked me to serve on the RCIA team, to lead Saturday evenin and Sunday morning prayer, and to bring Communion to those who cannot attend Mass regularly.  Each week I will visit the parish grade school, help instruct the students, and even take part in lunch and recess.  I will be called on to assist the priests at Mass, to lector and distribute communion, and to instruct the students at Friday morning school liturgies.  Through these experiences and some “yet to be named,” I hope to gain further insight into the life and ministry of the parish priest so that in the future I might better serve the parishes that I will be asked to shepherd.

HOLY SPIRIT PRAYER GROUP

We know that today’s culture is becoming darker and darker and more accepting of evil.  Even as Christians we have become lazy and have allowed human secularism to creep into our thinking.  We need to see these “gray areas” for what they are and denounce them.  On Tuesday, Kay Schmidl will lead us in defining what we believe as Catholics and what is truth.  Important teaching! In chapel at 7:30 p.m.

Mercy Franciscan at West Park, 2950 West Park Dr. will have a Blessing of the Animals, Saturday, Oct. 6, 2007.  Registration 10:00 a.m. followed by a blessing at 10:30 a.m.  To register call 451-8900.

PTO MEETING

You are invited to attend the St. Antoninus PTO meeting on Wednesday, Sept. 26 in the Undercroft at 7:00 p.m. for refreshments with the meeting at 7:30 p.m.

YOUTH CLUB MEETING

Don’t forget the Youth Club Meeting is Thursday, Oct. 4th at 7:00 p.m. in the Youth Room of the Undercroft.  Hope to see you there!
