Today I am with my friend, Fr. Bruno Healy, a priest of the Archdiocese of Westminster (ie, London, England). Fr. Bruno was given permission by his Diocesan Bishop to try his vocation as a hermit. Currently, Fr. Bruno lives in the gardener's cottage on the grounds of the Carmelite Monastery in Quidenham, outside of Norwich. Although Fr. Bruno joins the nuns for Mass and some of the Liturgy of the Hours, he keeps to his cottage and has a set schedule of prayer and reading, work and relaxation. Being a hermit is a rather rare vocation in the Church. However, the Second Vatican Council reminds us that no matter how pressing are the pastoral needs of the Church, the contemplative life has pride of place. It reminds the whole Church of both the need and the centrality of prayer in our lives. This also gives me the opportunity to announce our parish's nine week novena to the Sacred Heart of Jesus. Starting this Sunday and each Sunday until the Solemnity of Christ the King (11/25), there will be a petition during the General Intercessions through which we will honor the Sacred Heart of Jesus and request His blessing on our parish. On the Solemnity of Christ the King, we will re-consecrate our parish to the Sacred Hearts of Jesus and Mary.
October: Month of the Rosary. David Endres will lead the Rosary each Sunday of October at 11:10 AM. There are also opportunities to pray the Rosary together after the daily Mass and on Mondays. Included with this bulletin are the Fifteen Promises our Lady made to those who PRAY THE ROSARY. -- Rev. Christopher R. Armstrong

FROM OUR PRINCIPAL, MR. JACK COREY
This Friday, October 5th, will be Grandparents’ Day at the school. As in the past, this will move the 8:00 a.m. Mass to 9:00 a.m. This will allow families to attend Mass with their grandchildren. Grandparents with grandchildren in the school should meet in the youngest grandchild's homeroom by 8:40. At that time older grandchildren will go to that classroom and the family can attend 9:00 AM Mass together. Parents and younger siblings are welcome at the Mass, but because of space limitations we ask that they do not attend the reception nor the tour of the school. This is a marvelously attended event. This week we will also start Terra Nova testing in grades 2, 4, 6, and 8. For the past two years St. Antoninus students have scored in the top ten percent across the country. This is a tribute to the hard work of all three groups: teachers, parents and students. Excellence like this is no accident. It requires the sustained involvement of all three groups. Thank you, one and all for your support.
NEW YEAR’S EVE DANCE sponsored by the PTO on December 31, in the undercroft. Look for details in future bulletins.
THE ST. ANTONINUS PTO Vice President position is open. Anyone interested should call Maria at 922-2493 or Joan at 451-2427. This can be filled by 1 or 2 adults.
HOLY SPIRIT PRAYER GROUP
We are called to practice the corporal works of mercy. Sometimes, in our volunteerism, we fail to realize that we are answering that call. Many of us have special ministries that feed our spirits while we are caring for others. On Tuesday in chapel at 7:30PM, two of our members will share some thoughts about their own volunteering. Evie Gerke, a volunteer Chaplain in Pastoral Care at University Hospital has many stories to tell of her visits to the sick. Marlene Kiely will share information about her work at Pregnancy Center West and at Healthy Beginnings. There will be time for discussion. |
A NOTE FROM OUR
SEMINARIAN INTERN, DAVID ENDRES Earlier this month the seminarians of the Archdiocese were treated to an afternoon cruise along the Ohio River sponsored by the Serra Club (not the Sierra Club!) and spearheaded by parishioners Ed and Alice Willig. The event was also attended by retired priests and members of the Serra Club, lay men and women who work to support religious vocations in the Church. The event illustrated well that we all have a role to play in raising up future priests and religious for the Church. Every member of the Church – but especially parents and grandparents- can help through their prayers and support of vocations in their families. St. Antoninus has been a parish blessed with religious vocations in the past. Along with the members of the Serra Club and our own parish Vocations Committee, let us all pray for a new flowering of holy vocations.

Dear Fellow Parishioners, Aren’t we blessed as Catholics! The Church dedicates October in honor of Our Blessed Mother and the Rosary. Let’s be honest, sadly in today’s culture Our Lady and the rosary are ‘at best’ often ignored even by Catholics and ‘at worst’ ridiculed. Yet, in God’s mercy, Our Lady, the Mediatrix of all grace, continues to intercede on our behalf. This is especially paramount here in America where under legalized abortion we have taken the lives of over 48,000,000 (!!) waiting-to-be-born children and wounded their parents and families. Mercy, mercy! We all need God’s merciful help. So, feeling “stumped”? “Well, what can my family and I do?” Use our God-given arsenal in this battle between the culture of death and Jesus’ Gospel of LIFE: 1. Reverently receive the sacraments of Holy Eucharist & Reconciliation 2. Pray the rosary each day, starting this month of October. 3. Join families around the world in prayer to Our Lady of Fatima, Sat. October 13. Note: Ninety years ago, on October 13, 1917, Our Lady of Fatima (Portugal) appeared again to three shepherd children…in the presence of tens of thousands of on-lookers! Mary again told us to “pray the rosary and do penance”! Then there was the great Miracle of the Sun witnessed by so many including news people from across the country. www.fatima.org/essentials Pray for a merciful end to the violence in our city against the born and the unborn. 1. Rosary Walk to Fountain Square: 9:30am Immaculata steps (procession starts at bottom of stairs, parking near The Boathouse), 10:30am Fountain Square: Consecration of our city. 2. Family Rosary Vigil and Benediction (noon, Holy Spirit Center in Norwood)…musical celebration and refreshments. God is good! Jane Hoffman, St. Antoninus Pro-Life/ Pro-Family Commission
