Dear Parishioners,

October is traditionally dedicated to Our Lady of the Rosary.  When Islamic forces threatened Christian Europe in 1571, Pope Pius V, urged Catholics to pray the Rosary for the victory.   According to the New Catholic Encyclopedia, "On that day [October 7], the Rosary Confraternity of Rome was meeting in the Church of the Minerva, headquarters of the Domincan Order [to which Pius V belonged], to recite the rosary for the special intention of victory for Christian arms.  When news reached Rome [of victory at the battle of Lepanto] it was attributed to the intercession of the Virgin invoked by their prayers."  But, it is also said that Pope Pius V had vision of the battle itself and cried out "Victory" at the completion of the Rosary.  Later, Pope Leo XIII (1878-1903) would write 13 encyclicals urging the faithful to recite the Rosary.  Heaven seemed to confirm his witness when Our Lady appeared to the children at Fatima in 1917 and for the first time declared herself to be "the Lady of the Rosary."  And who can forget the witness of the late great Pope John Paul II, his fervent love of the Rosary, and his confidence in it to overcome the culture of death which threatens us today?  The victory for the Culture of Life can still be won much like the battle of Lepanto was won by means of the Rosary.  The need to pray the Rosary is just as urgent today as it was in 1571, if not more so.

It is a great comfort to me as a pastor that the Rosary is prayed daily after Mass and by so many of the faithful.  A few years ago I was at an airport and had to empty my pockets in order to go through security.  When I was collecting my things, a guard noticed my rosary beads and burst into tears.  "I haven't seen one of those since my mother's funeral many years ago," she said.  "I promise to start praying it again, Father."   I don't know if she did, but, if you have not said the Rosary for a while, I hope you will start and continue praying it.

HOLY SPIRIT PRAYER GROUP

Is having a personal relationship with Jesus important in your life?  Do you know that the best way to do that is by learning of Him through the scriptures?  Hearing of Him only on Sundays is not enough.  Believing that to be true, the prayer group periodically has teachings and reflections on pertinent passages.  This week Karen Klaene and Elaine O’Brien will share with us reflections on the passages they have selected.  Join us.  As St. Jerome stated, “Ignorance of Scripture is ignorance of Christ”.  In chapel, 7:30PM, Tuesday.

ELDER HIGH SCHOOL STUDENTS who need service hours may call the rectory office at 922-5400, Monday thru Friday between 8AM – 3PM to work on Thursday, October 11 and Friday, October 12.

A NOTE FROM OUR

SEMINARIAN INTERN, DAVID ENDRES

This Sunday is our parish celebration of those who are marking their silver or golden wedding anniversaries.  Whenever we as Catholics think of “vocations,” we often think of a life of dedicated service as a priest, sister, deacon, or brother.  We are reminded this weekend of the authentic vocation to marriage -- those who are devoted to family life, especially to service to spouses, children, and grandchildren.  Like those who have answered a call to religious life, these couples witness to the fidelity to which God calls each of us.

My parents who have celebrated over thirty years of marriage as well as both sets of my grandparents who enjoyed over fifty years together have been a witness of fidelity in my own life.  In an age of broken promises and shattered commitments, these couples’ lives speak eloquently of the joy found in service, fidelity, and love.  As a parish we honor you and thank you for such a needed witness and for saying “yes” to the vocation that God intended for you.

HALLOWEEN HAPPENINGS on Thursday, October 25th in the undercroft from 6 pm to 8 pm recommended for kid’s ages 3-9 adult supervision necessary.  For registration send $3 plus registration form in an envelope marked “Halloween Happenings” to school by Oct. 22nd.   Make checks payable to troop #6572.  Or pay at the $5.00 at the door.  Children should wear costumes.  Questions, call Diane Martini 922-0963 or Josette Binder 451-2157.

Boys Basketball Stack Tryouts: will be held October 7th, for 5th graders at 1:00, 6th graders at 2:30, and 8th graders at 4:00. Times for the October 14th sessions will be announced later. Boys must attend at least one tryout to be considered for a stack team. There will not be a 7th grade stack team this year.

ST. JOSEPH CEMETERY will hold a Candlelight Prayer Service on Tuesday, October 9, at 7PM in the St. Joseph Mausoleum at the corner of Rapid Run and Nebraska.  Call 251-3110 if you plan on attending.

22ND ANNUAL ELDERAMA FUND RAISER on Saturday, October 13th.  Call Elder High School at 921-3744 for ticket information.

Don’t wait for tomorrow for you may not be given

another opportunity!

A charming elderly gentleman used to stop by occasionally at an antique shop in New Hampshire to sell furniture. One day after he left, the antique dealer’s wife said she wished she had told the gentleman how much she enjoyed his visits. “Next time, let’s tell him so,” the husband said. The following summer a young woman came in and introduced herself as the daughter of the gentleman

who use to visit the shop. Her father, she said, had died. Then the wife told her about the conversation she and her husband had had after the father’s last visit. The young woman’s eyes filled with tears. “Oh, how much good that would have done my father!” she cried. “He was a man who needed to be reassured that he was liked.” “Since that day”, the shopkeeper said later, “whenever I think something particularly nice about a person, I tell them. I might never get another chance.”

Have you ever wished you had done something after it’s too late? All of us have. It’s such a helpless feeling. One of the ways to avoid that sad experience is to always try to do what has to be done, today. That is especially true with really important things, like the Lord’s work. A loving Christian like you never passes up the opportunity to do something on behalf of God to whom we owe so much. This is the time of year many parishes conduct a special appeal on stewardship and giving. When your parish asks you to reevaluate your giving and make a generous statement concerning your stewardship response to God’s blessings in your life, it is an opportunity that you should not put off until tomorrow. Through your generous response you can benefit the Lord’s work and raise your level of happiness at the same time. You have a loving heart. You see the desperate needs that exist today in the larger churches and also in your local parish. That is why you’re so important. Because only committed people like you will do what needs to be done. Through your stewardship response you have a wonderful opportunity to demonstrate your love and concern. Show that you have both, now, today!

During your stewardship appeal, each member and friend of the parish will be asked to make a commitment. When you do, you are making a statement before God. You are telling God you care enough to do what has to be done. Your help is needed – while there is still time■

Don’t Wait For Tomorrow

October Party

October gave a party;

The leaves by hundreds came -

The Chestnuts, Oaks, and

Maples,

And leaves of every name.

The Sunshine spread a carpet,

And everything was grand,

Miss Weather led the dancing,

Professor Wind the band.

AFTER YOUR WILL

The first step for a Christian steward to consider in estate planning is preparation of a will. A will is nothing more than a written statement of how you want your property distributed after death. Once your will is prepared, there are a few other things you may also want to consider.  If you have minor children, you should choose a personal guardian and a financial guardian for your children. These can be the same or different individuals, and it is wise to also name successor guardians in the event the first-named individuals cannot assume this role.  You may also want to determine if you want a living will. Some states permit you to express your desires about your care in the event of terminal illness in a living will. Perhaps you will also determine if you want to designate a medical power of attorney. This document appoints someone to make health care decisions for you in the event you are unable to do so. Finally, you may wish to consider if you want a durable power of attorney. This document designates someone to act on your behalf when you are incompetent to perform the duties you specify in it. Incapacitating conditions resulting from illness or accident can suddenly overwhelm anyone at any age, not just the elderly. Making these determinations now, when you are healthy, can assure your desires are carried out, and save considerable trauma and second guessing among your relatives and friends should such an unfortunate situation befall you or your family members. An experienced estate planning professional can help you arrive at the best estate planning tools for you■.
