I had been at the Canon Law Convention in Costa Mesa, CA and then I went on retreat at Our Lady of New Clairvaux, a Trappist Abbey in Vina CA. The convention was very informative and on retreat I was able to speak to my spiritual father, Dom Bernard Johnson, OSCO, at length, which is always a great blessing for me. Today, however, we celebrate Mission Sunday. I have asked those parishioners who have had mission experience to come to the 9:30 Mass as a way of highlighting the missionary purpose of our Church: we exist to share the Good News that God loves us as revealed in the life of Jesus Christ. We can be a missionary anywhere but especially at home and at work. I was deeply impressed by a family I met in Modesto, CA, who have consecrated their business to the Sacred Heart of Jesus and share the Good News with their employees, many of whom have never even heard that God loves them. Moreover, since October is the month of the Rosary, the Servant of God, Archbishop Fulton Sheen, the one time National Director of the Propagation of the Faith, has given the rosary a missionary twist. In February of 1951, Archbishop Fulton Sheen inaugurated a WORLD MISSION ROSARY. The variously colored beads of each decade call to mind an area where the Church continues the evangelizing mission: GREEN for the forests of Africa; BLUE for the oceans surrounding the islands of the Pacific; WHITE symbolizing Europe, the seat of the Holy Father, shepherd of the world; RED calling to mind the fire of faith that brought missionaries to the Americas, and YELLOW the morning light of the East, for Asia. May Mary, the Lady of the Rosary and the Star of Evangelization intercede for our missionaries at home and abroad! -- Rev. Christopher R. Armstrong
ALL SOULS MASS
Please mark your calendar for Nov. 2nd, 7:30 PM, when we will offer a special Mass in remembrance of your loved ones who have died. We will prepare candles marked with the names of all those who have died (and were buried from St. A) since last ALL SOULS DAY. Families are invited to bring these candles to the altar just before Mass begins. We look forward to seeing you at this very special Mass and at the reception following the Mass. FROM OUR PRINCIPAL, MR. JACK COREY
For those who took part in Grandparent’s Day, you know what a special day it was here. Our deepest thanks go to Mr. Anneken for coordinating all the volunteers that made this day a success. While many grandparents thanked me for the day, my only contribution was to be smart enough to stay out of the way, knowing that Mr. Anneken had everything under control. Our “Thank you” also goes to the teachers and volunteers, who regularly make all activities, including Grandparents Day, immensely successful.

A NOTE FROM OUR
SEMINARIAN INTERN, DAVID ENDRES This weekend marks our annual “Mission Sunday.” When we think of work in the mission field we often think of helping to provide others in foreign lands with the necessities of life such as food, water, and shelter and to preach the faith (certainly a noble task!). Less often, however, now do we think of our mission to evangelize in our own backyards – to share with those around us the “necessity” of Christ and His Church. In our own neighborhoods and families there are many who have not heard the message of Jesus or have fallen away from the practice of the faith. Perhaps this week we could encourage a neighbor, co-worker, or family member to join us at Mass to connect or reconnect with the life-sustaining graces of the Church and its sacraments. We all have a missionary vocation, whether that is to the farthest corners of the earth or in our own backyards and workplaces.
BUNDLE SUNDAY FOR ST. VINCENT DE PAUL SOCIETY on November 3 & 4. Volunteers will accept clothing, small working appliances, kitchen utensils, toys and bicycles. This year for the first time, we are also accepting contributions of non-perishable food items.
HOLY SPIRIT PRAYER GROUP
Praying in tongues sometimes gets a bad rap from people who do not understand its value. On Tuesday, Fay Brink’s talk “Why Would I Want the Gift of Tongues?” will try to answer the doubters. As the “least of all the gifts” of the Holy Spirit it is still a valuable tool for discernment, guidance and strengthening one’s hope and trust in the Lord. It is available to all who are willing to free themselves from a desire to be in control. Submission to God, in this way brings joy and peace and helps us to realize His great love for us. Are you curious? Come to chapel at 7:30PM.
