A few years ago I spoke to the RICA candidates about Basic Christian Morality. One the catechists suggested that I do the same during my Sunday homily. At first I resisted but I have since decided to follow up on the suggestion. Later, during the four Wednesdays in Lent, Fr. Mike Seger, a moral theologian at our seminary, will present Catholic Morality in greater detail. In the homily today, I desired to address the foundation of Christian Morality: the dignity of a human being and his or her eternal destiny. It has ten characteristics. Six are drawn from Natural Law (nature, here, means that which makes something what it is) and four from Divine Revelation (that is, God's self-disclosure to us). From natural law we know that man/woman can:1)think; 2)choose; 3)love; he is 4) a body-person; 5) unique though social; 6) historical. From the Old Testament, God reveals that man/woman is 7) made in his image and likeness (Gn. 1:27); 8) fundamentally good (Gn.1 :31); 9) God's partner in creation (Gn. 1:28). Finally, the New Testament reveals that we are adopted sons and daughters of the Father, brothers and sisters of Jesus Christ and temples of the Holy Spirit. (See Mt. 25). In sum, we are creatures composed of body and soul and made in the image and likeness of God; the likeness to God is chiefly in the soul. That is our dignity. We are made to know, love and serve God in this life and to be happy with Him in the next. That is our destiny. And all of it forms the basis for Christian Morality. -- Rev. Christopher R. Armstrong

This week is special. Thanks to three of our members,
we will have brief reflections on the lives of three
important saints: St. Francis of Assisi, St. Gertrude
and St. Louis de Montfort. Between them we have
models for sanctity, love for the poor souls, and
consecration to our Blessed Mother. As we approach
All Saints Day what could be more appropriate?
In chapel, Tuesday at 7:30 PM.

FROM OUR PRINCIPAL, MR. JACK COREY
Dear Parishioners, An issue brought up in the Catholic From the Inside Out discussion groups is regular Mass attendance. The Church teaches that unless there is a grave reason, for not doing so one must attend Mass either Saturday evening or Sunday. (Friday Mass is no substitute). Our students are taught this at school. If as parents we allow athletics, vacation, or plain laziness to interfere with our obligation to attend Mass, what message are we sending to our children? I am afraid the message being passed on is that laws are only applicable when convenient. What if we were to deem the Ten Commandments as inconvenient? If, through our actions, we teach that God’s laws are negotiable, what happens when our children become teenagers? Do our laws then also become irrelevant when inconvenient? What happens when our children decide the commandment to “honor thy father and mother” just isn’t convenient. Worse yet, what happens when God asks why we put soccer, the Bengals’ game, or anything else as a higher priority than Himself? Finally, if we do not attend Mass, we rob our children and ourselves of the privilege and graces of the Catholic Mass.
A NOTE FROM OUR
SEMINARIAN INTERN, DAVID ENDRES When I was a college student at Xavier University, one of the experiences that greatly enriched my faith was my work with the St. Vincent de Paul Society. As students, we took part in charitable works including tutoring, bringing communion to the sick, and organizing food and clothing drives. Through these works, we desired to grow closer to Christ through serving others. Recently, I have had the opportunity to renew my involvement in the St. Vincent de Paul Society through St. Antoninus. Here at the parish, members of the Society go about their work quietly, responding to requests for assistance by going two-by-two to visit them in their homes. In recent months the needs of those in our own neighborhood have been great. As the Society depends on the gifts of parishioners, I invite you to make an offering in one of the “poor boxes” located near each church entrance to help your neighbors who are in need. |
SAINT ANTONINUS PTO General Meeting will be on Wednesday, November 7, in the undercroft with refreshments at 7PM. The meeting starts at 7:30PM. American Greetings wrapping paper is being sold thru October 29th. For a catalog of wrapping paper styles call Karen Hartoin at 451-6386 or Lori Rolfes at 451-9737. The office of Vice President is still open. Call Maria at 922-2493 or Joan at 451-2427 to volunteer. This office can be filled by 1 or 2 adults.
ATHLETIC CLUB is looking for volunteers to serve on the Board for 2008. Please contact Scott Reiter at 922-5002 or Todd Logan at 922-1782 for more information.
As Election Day on November 6th, approaches, naturally each of us strives to vote with a clear conscience: “At all times and in all places, the Church should have the true freedom to teach the faith, to proclaim its teaching about society…and to pass moral judgment even in matters relating to politics, whenever the fundamental right of man or the salvation of souls requires it.” (Second Vatican Council) “A well-formed Christian conscience does not permit one to vote for a political program nor for an individual law which contradicts the fundamental contents of faith and morals.” (Sacred Congregation for the Doctrine of the Faith) 1. Vote. 2. Know the candidates: to learn if they stand for the right values check their civic/voting records and see if they put their values into action/leadership, their websites, their literature 3.Reject the disqualified and distinguish between Policy and Principal: suppose a candidate said “I support terrorism” we would hardly say, “Well, I disagree with you on terrorism, but what’s your health care and education funding plan?” Of course we would immediately realize such a position would disqualify her/him from public service. We would not need to look no further. Their support for abortion (or for any other of the intrinsic evils,) is enough for us to decide not to vote for such a person. 4. Keep our loyalty focused on Jesus, and work to put our faith into action. May we remember the Church has been given to us and teaches that abortion and infanticide, euthanasia, embryonic stem cell research, human cloning, the legal recognition of homosexual unions or placing them on the same level as marriage are always morally wrong. Our opposition to them must be non-negotiable. (See the websites for info: www.priestsforlife.org/legislation www.saintantoninus.org ). God is good!
