Dear Parishioners,

The mystery of Man is his freedom.  Since it is a principal of Basic Christian Morality, it bears repeating: the mystery of every man or woman is his or her freedom.  A mystery is not a puzzle but rather something more than we can take in.  For example, the eye does not exhaust the light of the sun; there is more light than the eye can possibly see.   To be free means having the ability to choose. The correlative of freedom is responsibility.  Freedom and responsibility are two sides of one coin.  Without freedom (the ability to choose), there is no responsibility; without responsibility, there is no morality. The book of Genesis provides at least two illustrations.  Adam refuses to accept his responsibility and disobeys God’s commandment not to eat of the fruit of the tree of the knowledge of good and evil.  Cain refuses his responsibility and slays his brother Abel: “Am I my brother’s keeper?” he says.  Both Adam and Cain shirk their responsibility and so misuse their freedom.  They dehumanize themselves and become like mere animals.  Furthermore, freedom, the ability to choose, is the foundation of Christian Morality.  There are two types: external freedom (to do all you can do) and internal freedom (to be all that you can be). External freedom is limited by oppression, prejudice and injustice.  Internal freedom is limited by ignorance, passions, and habits (virtues or vices).  Our day to day actions are the means to inner freedom which brings with them the obligation to love (the highest form of freedom since we choose to desire the Good for someone and to do something about it.)  External moral actions deepen our love for God in whom alone we find ultimate inner freedom since He alone frees us from death and thus makes us everything we can possibly be.  Finally, human freedom, both external and internal, is real but conditioned by threats. The paradox of human freedom is that our failure to respond to God's call to be free is itself our free choice not fully to be free; that is the meaning of sin.

NOVEMBER is traditionally devoted to the Poor Souls.  St. John Vianney gives at least one reason to pray for them.  “If it were but known how great is the power of the good souls in Purgatory with the Heart of God, and if we knew all the graces we can obtain through their intercession, they would not be so much forgotten.  We must therefore, pray much for them that they may pray much for us.”

Biggs and Kroger Gift Cards and the 2008 Entertainment Books are on sale in the church elevator hallway after all weekend Masses, and at the rectory, M-F from 8AM to 3 PM.

Dear Parishioners,

This past week we started the second quarter.  Parent-Teacher conferences start next Monday, November 12th.  During this time our teachers and parents will be meeting to discuss the progress of their students.  Parent-teacher conferences are critical for the effective partnering between home and school.  Without continuous parent-teacher collaboration we cannot do a first rate job in educating our students.

A NOTE FROM OUR SEMINARIAN INTERN, MR. DAVID ENDRES

Over the last two months a number of parishioners have been engaged in a period of study and reflection using the book, Catholic from the Inside Out.  The book relates one parish’s story of how it attempted to better its parish school in terms of academics, virtue, and Catholic identity.  By reading about the experience of this school, we were able to reflect on our own parish school – its strengths as well as areas for improvement.  Having participated in these discussions, I can tell you that they were amazingly refreshing and positive.  The school, its staff, and administration were frequently lauded for their dedication.  Parents were praised for reinforcing the values of the school at home.  The parishioners – even those without children in the school – were thanked for their generosity.  Through all of this we were reminded that we must always work to improve.  We must be good stewards of  that with which the Lord has provided us, for as He tells us: “From the person to whom much is given, much is expected” (Luke 12:48).
