Dear Parishioners, “You can depend on this as worthy of full acceptance: Jesus Christ came to save sinners”. (1 Tim. 1:15). Basic Christian Morality considers the reality of sin and Jesus our Savior. Sin is original and personal, mortal or venial. Original Sin entered the world when Adam and Eve disobeyed God’s law: “Do not eat of the fruit of the tree of the knowledge of good and evil.” Their sin alienates them from God: “Why were you hiding?” It alienates them from themselves: “I was naked so I hid.” To be naked in the ancient world meant to be stripped of your dignity; in this case Adam and Eve are stripped of their original justice and holiness due to their sin and are “ashamed.” That man is alienated from others is illustrated in the story of Cain and Abel. Cain slays his brother, Abel, out of jealousy and absolves himself of any responsibility: “Am I my brother’s keeper.” Man is alienated from creation when the waters of Noah’s flood inundate the world due to sin. Finally, the world is so fragmented by incomprehension, as illustrated in the story of the Tower of Babel that man is alienated from the world in which he lives. If the whole human race contracts the debt of original sin (save for the Immaculate Virgin Mary), each human is capable of committing personal sin. Personal sin is to abuse the freedom (the ability to choose) which God has given to each one to love Him above all things and to love one’s neighbor as oneself. Personal sin contains three elements: 1) object: God determines what is good and what is not; see the Ten Commandments; 2) intention: why we do something determines praise- or blame-worthiness; 3) circumstances (who? where? when? how?) can mitigate or aggravate an action, one’s freedom and responsibility. Mortal sin is a deliberate choice made with full knowledge and free consent to do something contrary to divine law. “Unrepented, it brings eternal death.” Venial sin concerns less grave matter and/or partial consent. Jesus saves us from our sins. He cures the defects of original sin by being completely obedient to God’s laws even to the point of shedding His blood on the cross. By that same paschal mystery, He cured us from personal sin. He is our standard of moral conduct and reveals to us our true human dignity and eternal destiny. Why be good? Because: “Life is short/Death is sure/Sin the cause/Christ the cure.” |
On Saturday, November 17, nearly fifty parishioners of all ages participated in the Fall Clean Up Day. I am grateful to all of you for your stewardship of our little corner of paradise we call St. Antoninus. On the Solemnity of Christ the King, we as a Parish, renew our consecration to the Sacred Heart of Jesus and our dedication to the Immaculate Heart of Mary. For the past nine weeks, during the general intercession of the Sunday Mass, we have been asking the Lord to accept our sincere and heartfelt renewal in His service. This bulletin also contains the promises of the Sacred Heart to those who thus honor Him. Families and individuals may wish to repeat the consecration at home. May the reign of His Sacred Heart be our salvation. May the Immaculate Heart of Mary protect us. Rev. Christopher Armstrong

Dear Parishioners, On November 29, our second graders will receive the Sacrament of Reconciliation for the first time at 7:00 p.m. Sacramental preparation is one of the most important things we do as a school, but preparation can only go so far. Unless we as adult members of the parish let our children/grandchildren see our faith exercised in our everyday life, there is little chance the children will carry on the faith after they leave school. In all the places I have lived, I can’t think of another place than the west side where Catholic churches outnumber shopping malls. In our busy lives, a great tradition to start would be to go to reconciliation with our children during Advent. As we get closer to Christmas, hours will be spent cleaning and decorating homes, wrapping gifts, and preparing food for loved ones. Take time to prepare for the coming of the infant Jesus. For if we don’t, I can almost guarantee our kids won’t either.

SEMINARIAN INTERN, MR. DAVID ENDRES When I was ten years old I began serving Mass at my home parish. Serving at the altar was frightening at first. I couldn’t figure out how to tie my cincture. I couldn’t remember which vessels to place on the altar at which times. I didn’t even know how to strike a match to light the candles! Fortunately, I learned all these things over time and became better at assisting the priest. I served throughout the end of my high school years and again as a graduate student in Washington, D.C., at the National Shrine of the Immaculate Conception. Serving Mass helped me to appreciate the Mass, the role of the priest, and eventually helped me to recognize my own vocation. I have been impressed with those who serve here at St. Antoninus. They are to be commended for their attentiveness, prayerfulness, and the sacrifices they make to serve – especially getting up for the early Masses. Serving Mass might seem like a small task, but it is an admirable work that is vital to our worship and spiritually beneficial to those who generously give their time to serve at the Lord’s altar.
HOLY SPIRIT PRAYER GROUP
Recently, Father Chris Armstrong led a group of pilgrims to Lourdes, France where the Blessed Virgin Mary appeared to St. Bernadette in 1858. Father Armstrong was happy to be able to return to the Shrine that he had visited as a seminarian 30 years before. On Tuesday night Father will share with us some of his experiences and insights into the apparitions of Our Lady to St. Bernadette and her message urging prayer and penance for sinners and healing for souls. Come and join us in Chapel at 7:30PM.
