BABYSITTING FOR THE 9:30AM MASS, SUNDAY, December 23

Adult Volunteers: Candy Bushman, Julie Ashe

Student Helpers: Matthew S., Sara S., Ashley W.

Dear Parishioners,

St. John the Baptist figures prominently in the Advent liturgy as the herald of the Lord.  St. Gregory the Great said that that was the role of preachers, namely, to prepare the way for the Just Judge who follows. Hence, if the word of Christ, rich as it is, dwells in our hearts, then it ought to impel us to do something about, such things as, going to confession.  I am not sure why the faithful so resist this wonderful sacrament, but it is clear that they do.  Nevertheless, confession times are available on Tuesday, Thursday and Saturday in preparation for Christmas.  Included with this bulletin is a sample examination of conscience. What kind of room will Christ find in your heart this holy season?

Rev. Christopher Armstrong

I overheard a server ask about the meaning of the pink candle on the Advent wreath.  The Advent wreath was introduced, it is said, by Martin Luther to mark the four weeks of Advent.  The pink candle signifies the third Sunday of Advent, called "Gaudete" ("Rejoice" in Latin) after the first word of the entrance antiphon from St. Paul's letter to the Philippians: "Rejoice! The Lord is near!"  The purple banners also signify the four weeks of Advent. The empty chair, which expects some one to sit on it, is called the "Etemisia."  In the ancient Catholic church, in the center of the triumphal arch over the altar and usually decorated in mosaics, was a throne with a precious cross resting on top of it.  That "etemisia" symbolized that Christ will come again in glory to sit upon his throne and judge the living and the dead.

This year I would especially ask all of our parishioners to set up the Nativity Scene in their homes.  Last year, I was a little surprised and a little saddened when I visited one of the lower grades in our parish school.  When I asked the children about the Nativity Scene in their homes, only half responded that they had one.  I quizzed them further just to make sure they knew what I was taking about.   Indeed, they did know what I was talking about and hence I was a little sad that this beautiful and simple devotion begun by St. Francis was beginning to slip away in our Catholic homes.  So in the rush of Christmas, buy yourself a Nativity Scene if you don't have one.  If you do have one, be sure to set it up.  Even if you live alone, there is every reason for all of us to be reminded of this astounding fact of our religion:  The Second Person of the Trinity became flesh in the womb of the Virgin Mary; He dwelt in her womb for nine months ,as in a Tabernacle; He was born of her whom no man knew.

FROM OUR PRINCIPAL, MR. JACK COREY

Dear Parishioners,

On Thursday, December 6, our first, third, and fourth grades put on an excellent Christmas performance.  Kudos goes to Mrs. Milano and our teachers for orchestrating such a fine performance.

This is the last school week for the year 2007.  For our return in January we have a lot planned.  Vocation Awareness Week starts the week of January 13.  This is a time where we remind our students that God never stops calling us to fulfill his plan.  We just need to listen with an open heart to discern God’s calling for us.

The last week of January is Catholic Schools Week.  Our Family Fun Night will be a Geography night on Tuesday, January 29.  During Catholic Schools Week we will also start our Everybody Counts program.  It seems to be the perfect time to celebrate that everyone is a gift from God.

A NOTE FROM OUR

SEMINARIAN INTERN,

MR. DAVID ENDRES

This week, the Octave before Christmas, the universal Church begins praying the “O Antiphons” as part of evening prayer.  The antiphons are ancient Christian prayers each of which highlights a title for the Messiah: O Sapientia (O Wisdom), O Adonai (O Lord), O Radix Jesse (O Root of Jesse), O Clavis David (O Key of David), O Oriens (O Rising Sun), O Rex Gentium (O King of the Nations), and O Emmanuel. Each one refers to the prophecy of Isaiah of the coming of the Messiah. Let us remember that Christmas is near and so pray with the Church this week: O Come Lord Jesus!

HOLY SPIRIT PRAYER GROUP

The one true Christmas Spirit is the Holy Spirit! He lives in our hearts and speaks to us about the wonders of the Incarnation and Birth of God’s Son, Jesus.  Take time in this busy season to come and hear Him speak to our hearts! Mary Handermann will share some thoughts and reflections on the prophetic words taken from the Scriptures speaking about this God-man thousands of years before His coming. In Chapel, 7:30PM.

BUILDING & GROUNDS COMMISSION

ANNUAL SUMMINARY

Many facility projects were completed this year through funding and effort by a variety of sources including: parish budgeted major improvement funds, private donations and our Building & Grounds volunteers.  Thanks to all parishioners for their support.

Church: Installed new windows (funded by donors), installed new carpet, stripped and waxed the floors under the pews and repaired some the tile floor areas where expansion was occurring.  New granite was installed around the baptismal font along with a new granite tower to replace the gift table and incorporate an ambry for the sacramental oils (funded by donors).  Also, a new exterior light post was installed at the east exit of church.

School: Installed a sink in the relocated art room, the hot water heater was replaced; new awnings were installed at entrances.   Volunteers painted the new wing 1st floor and the first grade and spirit wear hallways also completed some repair and painting in the 4th floor hallway. The school stair wells were painted.  The slate roof had an immediate repair in November, and repair is scheduled to replace all the copper dormers which have critical signs of wear.

General facility: All signs around the facility were updated. Exterior painting was done on some areas around the rectory and church. The flooring in the Holy Family was changed from carpet to a finished cement floor. The driveway blacktop was sealed and lines re-striped. The lower lot drain was cleared out.  New windows were installed at A Child’s Garden. The wood stairs from the lower lot were removed and volunteers landscaped the area with top soil and sod.

Rectory:  The all season room was updated with new windows.  Glass block windows were installed in the basement.  The rectory patio was replaced due to water damage; fencing and landscaping were installed (funded by anonymous donor).

Projects for the upcoming year will include updating the undercroft electric and lighting and also restoring some of the grounds shrubs and trees due to the drought conditions this past summer.   School projects are still to be determined by the B&G Commission.
