FROM OUR PASTOR

Dear Parishioners,

Ash Wednesday begins the penitential season of Lent in preparation for Easter.  Traditionally, Lent is a time for prayer, fasting and alms-giving.  It is not that we don’t do those things at other times, but rather that we do them with greater intensity and fervor during Lent.  Here are some Lenten opportunities in our Parish.  (Going to Mass one other day other than Sunday would be an excellent discipline for Lent but also for the rest of one’s life).

Prayer: Daily Masses on M-F 6:45 AM and 8:00AM, Saturday, 8:00AM.

Liturgy of the Hours: Evening Prayer I on Saturday 4:10PM and Morning Prayer on Sunday at 7:40 AM.

Rosary: after the 6:45 and 8 AM daily Masses.

Way of the Cross: Tuesdays at 7PM and Wednesdays at 12:45 PM.

Faith Formation:  Wednesdays at 7:30PM ( 2/13,20,27th; 3/5)  Christian Morality.

Confessions: Thursday, 7:30 PM.

Our fasting and self-denial is meant to supply for the needs of others (alms-giving).  This year we are going to aid a clean water project in Nicaragua, which will be overseen by a son of the parish, lay missionary Pat Duffy.  One way to do that is to give up some beverage, (pop/beer) and donate what you would have spent on it to the clean water project.  In summary, there are many opportunities for prayer, fasting and alms-giving right here in our parish.  The goal of Lent is to prepare for Easter.  Once again I hope many of our parishioners will attend the Great Easter Vigil.

                                 --Rev. Christopher R. Armstrong

Biggs and Kroger Gift Cards are on sale in the church elevator hallway after all weekend Masses, and at the rectory, M-F from 8AM to 3 PM.

40 HOURS AND ADORATION will end at the 11:30 Mass on February 3rd, with a procession and benediction.  Incense will be used at end of the 11:30 Mass.

THE ST. ANTONINUS WAYS & MEANS COMMISSION 16TH RUNNING OF THE NITE AT THE RACES AND MONTE CARLO

will be in the undercroft on Saturday, February 16.  Doors open at 7PM.  Post Time is 8PM.  Hors d’oeuvres, snacks, refreshments served all evening.  $15 admission fee at the door.   If you cannot come to this event, you can still join the fun by buying a horse and Split the Pot tickets. Mail form with your check to 1500 Linneman Road, 45238, Attn; Nite at the Races.

A Choice Raffle will be part of this entertaining evening and your assistance is needed.  We are looking for donations of gifts or cash (used to purchase gifts).  No item is too small or large!  Please call Mary Hirlinger at 347-0142, Julie Scott at 922-3015 or Leslie Keller at 922-7772.

SPECIAL PLENARY INDULGENCE

This year marks the 150th anniversary of the apparition of our Blessed Mother to St. Bernadette at Lourdes, France.  Archbishop Pilarczyk has dedicated Our Lady of Lourdes Parish as the Shrine for the Archdiocese of Cincinnati.  Visit their webpage at www.lourdes.org for times of services, Masses and confessions between February 2-11, for those who wish to take this opportunity for extra special grace.

ORIENTATION ON THE CHILD PROTECTION DECREE

The dates for the orientation meetings on the decree on child protection will be held at St. Antoninus in the Holy Family Room on the following dates: 1PM February 20, and 7:30PM April 9, 2008.

ST. VINCENT DE PAUL SOCIETY

During the Lenten season the St. Antoninus Conference of the St. Vincent de Paul Society will be collecting non-perishable food, household, and personal items in the barrel in the Greeting Room. Especially needed are the larger cans of soup, peanut butter, tuna, pasta and sauce, and meals-in-a-can. Collected items will be given to the St. William Food Pantry.

FROM OUR PRINCIPAL, MR. JACK COREY

Dear Parishioners,

This year we have a student council that meets with the principal periodically to serve as an advisory committee of sorts.  One of the projects they have agreed to undertake is the Water Project.  The bulletin insert gives a description of what the Water Project is and how we can incorporate our Lenten observation to help others.

While the inspiration for the Water Project comes from Pat Duffy, a St. Antoninus graduate living in Nicaragua as a missionary, the final implementation of the project has been the brainchild of the student council.  If you have any questions, please feel free to call me at 922-2500.

Please remember that Sunday, February 3rd, is open registration for all new students.

A NOTE FROM OUR

SEMINARIAN INTERN,

MR. DAVID ENDRES

Three weeks ago you were invited  prayerfully to consider whether there was someone that you know here at St. Antoninus that might possess the qualities to be a good priest or religious.  Through your response to this “Called by Name” initiative, 20 of our young people were named!  Please pray for these young men and women. You might choose to remember them in the midst of our Forty Hours devotion or weekly Friday exposition.  You might also sign up to receive the “traveling chalice” at a weekend Mass and take it home with you to pray for more priestly and religious vocations.  Pray to the Lord of the Harvest to send more laborers into his vineyard beginning here at our parish.

HOLY SPIRIT PRAYER GROUP

With the recent “March on Washington” and the importance of the “Abortion Issue” in the upcoming national election it is a good time for us to consider the issue at the local level.  Judy Erwin will speak to us on Tuesday about the very effective work that is being done by the Problem Pregnancy Center at Old St. Mary’s Church in Over-the-Rhine.  Our Bishops tell us that this is the single most important issue to be decided in the election.  Let us take heed.  In chapel at 7:30 PM
