FROM OUR PASTOR Dear Parishioners, One of St. Augustine's favorite questions was "why?" He was searching to understand the gift of faith. Why does God love the world so much that he sent his only Son to be our Saviour? St. Augustine could only come back to that essential truth of our faith: God is love and "Jesus Christ came to save sinners." As we enter the last two weeks of Lent, also known as Passiontide, the liturgy draws us to an ever deeper consideration of God's mercy in Jesus Christ and our condition as sinners. For example, there was an adaptation of Dostoevsky's Crime and Punishment at the Playhouse in the Park recently. The protagonist, Raskolnikov, has murdered two women and has successfully concealed his crime from an investigator. But the investigator knows he has committed the crime. So he asks Raskolnikov, "Do you believe in God?" He answers, "Yes”. But does it matter?" "And Lazarus? Do you believe that Lazarus was brought back to life?' "Yes. The Gospel says so. But more pointedly can a man who has killed his soul be brought back to life?" Eventually, Raskolnikov confesses his crime to his immense relief. It is clear that confession is good for the soul. Does it matter? YES! It brings us back to life. Does it matter? YES! By going to confession, we gain the grace Christ won for us in His Passion; there is no sin He will not forgive to those who repent. Does it matter? YES! By confessing our sins, we acknowledge that God is love.

If you missed the coverage of Marine Lance Corporal Phillip Klump’s return to St. Antoninus School you may view it at this link: www.saintantoninus.org. Click on the article to view pictures and a video of coverage provided by Channel 9. We wish to thank him for coming back to St. Antoninus and taking time out of his schedule to be with our students. As we head closer to the presidential election we will be sure to hear many negative comments about our own country. But last week, we saw volunteers at the polling places trying to help their candidate even though it was cold and raining. Our military is still made up of soldiers who volunteered to join. While no society made of humans is perfect, as long as we teach through our actions, the importance of giving of our own time to make this place better for the future, our country will remain great. Please pray that our students will be inspired to get involved in their communities as they grow older. Please also take a moment to pray for all our soldiers who put their own lives in danger for others.

HOLY SPIRIT PRAYER GROUP During Lent we are praying for the intentions of the Sacred Heart of Jesus. This week we will focus on praying for God’s guidance in the coming elections. There are so many political issues that are important to each of us but not all agree on what they are. However, there is one issue the Catholic Bishops have declared is the most important of all – the issue of abortion. America is the worst offender for promoting world-wide abortion. This is a grievous offense against God and man that calls to be stopped. Our prayer this week is that our Catholic people will exercise their consciences and make their voices heard through their votes. Join us in Chapel at 7:30 PM.
