FROM OUR PASTOR

Dear Parishioners,

The weather brought us a near blizzard last week-end.  Despite the inconveniences and sometimes tragedies such inclement weather can bring, I was really edified by how many people came to church.  Prudently, those who knew the weather would cause them problems stayed home.  But what amazed me, were the number of people who came for Eucharistic Adoration on Friday and for Sunday Mass over the week-end.  May the Lord bless our efforts to worship Him.

This coming Holy Week is another such opportunity to worship the Lord.  As the liturgy tells us, we devoutly recall the mysteries of our Redemption.  “We remember how you loved us!”

-- Rev. Christopher R. Armstrong

FROM OUR PRINCIPAL, MR. JACK COREY

On March 6, 50 students from our parish PREP program and St. Antoninus School received the Sacrament of Confirmation.  Archbishop Pilarczyk presided over the Mass.

We are truly grateful to all our families who have guided their children this far.  Continue to serve as an example of Catholic living.  We also are grateful for Deacon Schroeder for his work, Mrs. Obermeyer, our seventh grade Religion teacher, and Mr. Kohls, the parish PREP teacher.  These three made sure that our students received proper preparation before receiving the sacrament.

Finally, we are thankful for Fr. Armstrong, Mrs. Lally, the St. Antoninus Women’s Ensemble, and the sixth grade parents for all the preparation to make this evening a memorable success before, during, and after the Mass.

A NOTE FROM OUR SEMINARIAN
Today begins the holiest days of the Church year – “Holy Week” – the days set apart for us to commemorate Christ’s suffering, death, and resurrection.  When I was in the ninth grade my religion teacher challenged us to attend all of the Holy Week services.  I took him up on the challenge and have never regretted it!  The liturgies of the Holy Week celebrate the core of our faith. We celebrate on Holy Thursday the Mass of the Lord’s Supper, commemorating the institution of the Eucharist and of the priesthood. On Good Friday we remember Christ’s life-giving, redemptive sacrifice on the Cross, joining with Christ in his final hours on earth.  Beginning with the Vigil of Easter, we celebrate Christ’s triumph over death through his resurrection.  This year I encourage you to make a special commitment to attending the liturgies of Holy Week – you won’t be disappointed.

HOLY SPIRIT PRAYER GROUP

As we continue in prayer to unite ourselves with the holy will of the Sacred Heart, we have come to the Passiontide of Lent. Only one week is left to prepare our hearts for the agony of Good Friday and the glory of Easter. God is merciful and quick to accept our sorrow for any failures we have slipped into. Let us now renew our efforts to make this last week an act of complete reparation to His Sacred Heart. It is also an excellent time to intercede for God’s protection for His holy priests and for an increase in vocations. Join us in Chapel at 7:30 PM on Tuesday.

Holy Week with the joy of Easter is always a beautiful time to meditate on God’s Mercy and our great need of mercy.  The joy of Easter fills us with the hope of His mercy.  How the world longs for His mercy, even if we cannot always name it.  Mercy.

A pro life friend just returned from a high security prison where he again helped to give a Kairos retreat for the inmates.  The face of Christ, the need for mercy is there, especially those on death row.  The Church reminds us that capital punishment is reserved solely for those rare situations when no other feasible means is available to protect society.  Thank God for the devoted pro life individuals who tenaciously serve in this vital area to protect and promote the sanctity of human life both of the innocent victims and their families as well as the convicted guilty.  Mercy.

Thank God for pro life ministers who, promote the God-given dignity of the sick and dying; for all who educate us on the evils of euthanasia and infanticide; for those who valiantly live with special needs and for those who are blessed to serve them.  Mercy.  Notably, the Catholic Church consistently heralds the ministry of advocating life on behalf of those waiting-to-be-born.  Our conscience must be moved by the millions who are on the death row of the womb:  unseen, unheard, condemned to death often because of their special needs.  Slavery was sheer absurdity…owning another human.  Abortion is sheer absurdity that holds the bizarre stance that we should ‘look the other way’ if someone chooses to kill an unborn child.  During this Holy season, pray for His mercy; pray that America may vote to protect the sanctity of human life.  Jesus tells us “you shall know the truth and the truth shall make you free” (John 8:  31-32) God is good!  Jane Hoffman St. Antoninus Pro Life, Pro Family Commission.
