FROM OUR PASTOR

Dear Parishioners,

Last Saturday, March 29, I went to Music Hall for the memorial concert of the late Patricia A. Corbett. One eulogist described her as the "very model of modern major benefactor," who not only gave millions to Arts organizations but participated in them from giving up her box seats to someone's handicapped mother to being a member of the stage-hands union. I feel that I have personally benefited from her generosity and vision each time I walk into Music Hall and that I owe her a debt of gratitude that will never be fully repaid.  Her son, who had just died at the beginning of March, had chosen each musical selection at the concert for some special association with his mother. But the selection that most captured my imagination was the one without introduction: "Glory to God" from Handel's Messiah.  It seemed to me to capture the true power of the arts and perhaps why Mrs. Corbett was such an ardent supporter: they bring glory to God and peace to his people on earth (for example, the recent New York Philharmonic concert in North Korea).   Think what our life would be like without the arts.  In 1999, Pope John Paul II penned a letter to artists.  Among other things, he reminded us that:"The church needs musicians. How many sacred works have been composed through the centuries by people deeply imbued with the sense of mystery!  The faith of countless believers has been nourished by melodies flowing from the hearts of other believers, either introduced into the liturgy or used as an aid to dignified worship.  In song, faith is experienced as vibrant joy, love, and confident expectation of the saving intervention of God." (#12).  It is during the Easter season that we recall that all creation is restored to harmony by our Redeemer, Jesus Christ: Therefore, "let this place resound with joy, echoing all God's creation!" (the Exsultet)

-- Rev. Christopher R. Armstrong
