FROM OUR PASTOR

On April 2, Pope Benedict XVI celebrated the memorial mass for his predecessor, Pope John Paul II.  He mentioned that Good Friday, 2005, when Pope John Paul was too ill to carry the cross at the Coliseum he did so in his room where it was broadcast to the faithful around the world. "Who could forget it, all that love and suffering?" said the present Pontiff. The April 4 edition of the Catholic Telegraph also ran a story on Pope John Paul II and said that for his canonization cause they needed more stories about the Pope from English speaking people.  In my own case, since I was in Rome as a seminarian when he was elected and since I participated in as many Vatican ceremonies as I could, I myself could mention, above all else, his prayerfulness.  At prayer he seemed to be completely absorbed in God. For example, I happened to be in Rome one year for the Feast of the Body and Blood of the Lord.  As the pope was kneeling before the Blessed Sacrament on the back of a beautifully decorated truck, he seemed to radiate light! I was particularly struck by his eyes as they shone like sapphires!  I mention the prayerfulness of Pope John Paul to encourage our own prayerfulness.  For the past three years we met for Evening Prayer throughout the Easter season in different neighborhoods of the Parish.  This year, we will ask specific neighborhoods to come to Church May 1-11 for the Novena to the Holy Spirit in preparation for Pentecost. We will celebrate the Evening Prayer of the Church and have some time for fellowship afterwards.  Although we will invite neighborhoods, everyone is encouraged to come all nine nights to invoke the Holy Spirit for a fresh outpouring of His graces upon our parish.  AND REMEMBER, FOR PENTECOST WEAR SOMETHING RED!

-- Rev. Christopher R. Armstrong

A NOTE FROM OUR SEMINARIAN

This week Pope Benedict XVI will make his first visit to the U.S.   Along with other Cincinnati seminarians, I will have the opportunity to be present when the pope visits New York City’s St. Joseph Seminary.  I have been blessed to have seen the Holy Father in the summer of 2005 as part of World Youth Day in Cologne, Germany.  This summer I will also attend World Youth Day in Sydney, Australia with a group from St. Jude Parish.  These papal visits remind us of the unity of the Church and that God still speaks to us today through the successor of St. Peter.  Please pray that our country will be responsive to the message of the Holy Father and that the Church in America will be strengthened by his presence.

St. Antoninus Tuition Assistance Program donation request:  Christ has called us to care for each other.  To answer that call, St. Antoninus has developed a Tuition Assistance Program, supported by parishioners to help fellow parishioners pay their tuition.  TAP is also supported by funds from PTO.  Tuition assistance is provided to school families that are having financial hardship and apply for assistance. This is different from the “Parish School Support” or the School Endowment, in that the TAP donation directly pays the families’ current year school tuition bills.  Please pray for its success.

Applications for Tuition Assistance are available for families having financial hardship this upcoming 2008-09 school year.  In-parish school families with children in grades 1-8 may apply for assistance to offset part of their tuition.    Note that this year there are changes in the tuition assistance program: St. Antoninus will use the common PSAS (Private School Aid Service) application and the assistance will be offered at the beginning of the school year.   These applications are available on the St. Antoninus school web site.  The application must be postmarked by Friday May 9th and these awards will be made one time per year, in early June.   If this form has already been completed for High School assistance or for EDSAP (Elder Scholars Assistance Program), a transfer form (also available on the web site) can be submitted to PSAS (Private School Aid Service) for St. Antoninus to access that information.  This form only needs to be completed once per family.   If there are any questions, call the parish business manager Peggy James at 922-5400.

FROM OUR PRINCIPAL, MR. JACK COREY

One of our duties as a Catholic school is to teach our students that one’s vocation in life is more than deciding what we want to be when we grow up.  Discerning one’s vocation is an active process where one must be willing to listen to God’s call.

This Monday our fifth grade students will be going to the seminary.  There, they will get a small taste of how seminarians live.  One of our hopes is that our students see that people who are called to the priesthood or other religious life are ordinary everyday people called to do extraordinary work.

The ability of our Church to spread the Good News is tied to the number of people who are willing to follow God’s plan in every vocation.  Please pray for our fifth graders, that they will begin to listen to God’s calling.

VOCATION AWARENESS

Do you agree that there is a great need for more vocations to the priesthood and to the vowed religious life?  Would you care to assist the Holy Spirit in improving the current shortage?

Serra International is a group of over 22,000 men and women world wide whose purpose is to foster vocations to the priesthood, the deaconate and the vowed religious life, and in so doing to assist its members in responding to the universal call to holiness in their lives.  The Pope and the bishops support their work.

The Cincinnati Serra Club has approximately fifty women and men as members.  We meet in the undercroft of the Cathedral on the second and fourth Tuesday of each month at noon following the 11:30AM Mass.  Our club promotes prayer, education, vocation activities, affirmation of clergy, as well as joyful Christian fellowship.

We ask you to prayerfully consider our call to unite with us in this rewarding apostolate!  We invite your inquiry and/or visit.  Transportation is available.  For further info please call the following Saint Antoninus parish members of The Serra Club of Cincinnati: Mary Claire Torbeck, 922-2694; Edgar Willig, 922-2945; Mike Schiller, 922-5362.
