FROM OUR PASTOR

Today is the Solemnity of the Ascension when the Lord leaves us the Great Commission to teach all nations.  Sometime ago, one of my seminary professor's quoted the Servant of God,  Cardinal Newman, who wrote: "We can't hope to keep our faith unless we give it away."  The gift of faith, poured into us at our baptism, is from above and is given to each as the Father wills.  But once we have received the gift of faith, we must exercise the virtue of faith by increasing our knowledge of what we believe and why.  The virtue of faith is also an exercise of the will; that is, we choose to place our trust in God, especially in life’s most difficult circumstances.  I look at my own life and I am so grateful my parents shared their gift of faith with me.  As I grew, I came to realize that I had to make such faith my own.  Even now, as my Dad deals with my Mom's dementia, I am in awe of their faith.  My Dad prays the Stations of the Cross everyday and I know that he is strengthened by the sufferings of Jesus.  My Mom, in her own way, continues to trust in the Lord, even as she realizes that her mind is going.  For those and similar reasons, I am so edified by the parents of our parish who share their faith with their children and see to it that they practice their faith, especially by going to Mass every Sunday.  Likewise, I am edified by so many parishioners whose faith seems to be strengthened by the physical, mental, emotional, or spiritual trials they are asked to undergo.  We are indeed blessed as a parish that so many have given their faith to others!
Saturday, May 10, is the Solemnity of St. Antoninus, the patron of our parish.  I received the following notification from WGUC 90.9 FM: "WGUC is pleased to announce that an announcement will be aired during the 8:00 am hour on May 10, 2008: 'Today's programming is made possible in part, in honor of St. Antoninus Parish, observing today the Solemnity of their Parish Patron.'"  Let me know if you hear it!
We continue our novena to the Holy Spirit and ask for a fresh outpouring of His Love and Grace upon our parish.  Remember to wear something red for Pentecost.

Rev. Christopher R. Armstrong

FROM OUR PRINCIPAL, MR. JACK COREY

Dear Parishioners,

Today is a day for celebration, as our second grade students for the first time receive the Holy Eucharist!  I want to thank our Second Grade teachers Joyce Snyder, Connie Johnson and Arleene Vallejos for their good work in helping prepare our children to receive the Sacrament.  One would be hard-pressed, I’m sure, too find any school that gives students a better preparation for receiving the Eucharist.

I also want to thank the parents of these children for requesting us to help them prepare their sons and daughters for First Holy Communion.  At St. Antoninus we consider introducing children to the Eucharist to be one of the most important jobs we have.  I would also urge all to continue learning more about the Eucharist than what was taught them in second grade.  One might start, incidentally, by re-reading the column in the parish bulletin written in February by the now newly-ordained Deacon David Endres, entitled “Eucharistic Amazement.”  The article can be found at www.saintantoninus.org/Church/c_amaze.htm

Applications for Tuition Assistance are available for in-parish grade school families having financial hardship this upcoming 2008-09 school year.    Note that this year there are changes in the tuition assistance program: St. Antoninus will use the common PSAS (Private School Aid Service) application and the assistance will be offered at the beginning of the school year.   These applications are available on the St. Antoninus school web site.  The application must be postmarked by Friday, May 9th, and these awards will be made one time per year, in early June.   If this form has already been completed for High School assistance or for ESAP (Elder Scholars Assistance Program), a transfer form (also available on the web site) can be submitted to PSAS (Private School Aid Service) for St. Antoninus to access that information.  This form only needs to be completed once per family.   Questions? Call the parish business manager Peggy James at 922-5400.

St. Antoninus Tuition Assistance Program donation request:  TAP is supported by funds from PTO and from the generosity of our parishioners.  Tuition assistance is provided to school families that are having financial hardship and apply for assistance. The TAP donation directly pays the families’ current year school tuition bills.  Please pray for its success.

A NOTE FROM

DEACON DAVID ENDRES

Your outpouring of support on the occasion of my deacon ordination and first Mass serving as a deacon was very uplifting and humbling.   I thank all who have offered prayers and encouragement these past months and thank all who helped with the Mass and celebration.  May God bless each of you for your kindness.  I feel very blessed to be able to serve you as a deacon and to call St. Antoninus my home.

HOLY SPIRIT PRAYER GROUP

Sometimes we become weighed down by personal problems and burdens. We struggle on our own to find the answers. Frustration builds. There is an answer if we but turn to it. In Matthew 6:33 Jesus tells us, “Seek first the kingship of God, His way of holiness, and all these things will be given you besides. “ On Tuesday, Ben Klaene will share with us his own personal mission statement built around this Scripture passage. Perhaps, it can show each of us how to establish our own statement of faith and trust in God’s wisdom. In Chapel, 7:30 PM.

ST. VINCENT DE PAUL SOCIETY

As we celebrate the Feast of the Ascension, we are reminded that Christ's saving work on earth continues through his disciples...and now through us. When we give to the poor, God indeed pours his love, peace and joy into our hearts, into our lives and into the hearts of those who are poor.

Thanks to the generosity of our parishioners, in the first six months of our fiscal year we were able to distribute goods and services totaling $9,109 to families with 130 members.

We are pleased to acknowledge the assistance of members of the Youth Club and of the Scouts in loading the truck on the recent Bundle Sunday.
