FROM OUR PASTOR

Dear Parishioners,
Sometime ago, I read a news article about a WW II veteran.  He wondered out loud, as he looked at the moral decay in our country and the fact that so few citizens vote: "Is this what my friends died for?"  As we have been celebrating our country's independence this week-end, it is still an important question to ask.  Published in this bulletin is a condensed version of our bishops' document "Forming Conscience for Faithful Citizenship." Please read it.  It emphasizes our moral obligation to participate in the political life of our country.  First and foremost, we need to pray for those in authority over us.  In the General Intercessions at Mass, after we pray for the needs of the Church, we pray for the needs of society especially those with civil authority.  Secondly, we need to understand the teaching of the Church on moral, social and political issues and form our consciences accordingly.  Finally, we need to vote.  Voting is so strongly urged in the Catechism of the Catholic Church that not to do so is consider a serious moral failure.  "Is this what my friends died for?" ought to receive more than flag waving and fireworks as an answer. It needs to be answered with moral convictions and faith-filled fortitude in this great "land of the free and home of the brave."   May God bless America and may we do our part and vote!

Rev. Christopher R. Armstrong

BUILDING & GROUNDS MEETING this Monday, July 14, at 7:30PM in the undercroft. New members are always welcome.  Thanks to our outgoing commission head, Mark Cappel for his leadership.   This parish group helps keep our grounds looking good throughout the year and helps prioritize our building projects.

IT HAS BEEN brought to our attention that the Recycling units in our lower school lot have become an eyesore to the neighbors in that area.  These were located at the edge of that property for the convenience of the users and to ensure the safety of students in the playground area.   We are planning to move these further down the fence line to alleviate these unsightly problems.  Parishioners are asked not to enter during school hours and also be cautious of children that may be playing in that lot after school.  We appreciate your cooperation with this and hope that you will continue to recycle.  This program provides the parish about $3,000 each year along with the earth friendly benefits of recycling.

The Rite of Christian Initiation of Adults (RCIA) is open to those adults who wish to become Catholic or who simply wish to find out more about the Catholic faith.  The sessions are also open to those Catholics who wish to deepen their understanding of the faith.  If you or someone you know would like to attend RCIA, please contact Deacon Bob Schroeder at 922-4759 or at w8cro@arrl.net.  If you know a relative, friend, co-worker or neighbor who might like to receive an invitation to RCIA, Deacon Schroeder would be happy to send one.  The RCIA begins in mid-September and continues through the month of April.

FROM DEACON DAVID ENDRES

Thousands of Christian pilgrims journey every year to the Holy Land to deepen their faith in Christ.  There they find beautiful churches built over the same land in which Jesus taught, performed miracles, and suffered and died for our salvation.  They seek – and rightly so – the memory of Jesus and His place in history.  As I traveled from one holy site to another I was struck by the fact that we need not go in search of an “historical Jesus” limited to His self-manifestation 2,000 years ago.  In every church dedicated to Him, He remains with us in the Most Holy Eucharist.  It was a bit overwhelming to have this reality sink in – that Jesus remains present in the place where the Angel Gabriel announced his birth to Mary (Luke 1:26-38), where Jesus healed Peter’s mother-in-law (Mark 1:29-34), and where Jesus after the resurrection made himself known to his followers “in the breaking of the bread” (Luke 24:13-35).  In Nazareth, Capernaum, Emmaus, and many other places, Jesus is present in the Eucharist to those who seek him.  It was tempting to explore the sites and take photos and simply overlook the tabernacle.  But, as I was reminded, to do so was to pass by Him whom I seek, the very reason that the Holy Land is holy.

ST. VINCENT DE PAUL SOCIETY

In today's Gospel, we hear the story of the sower and we know that "some seed fell on rich soil and produced fruit, a hundred or sixty or thirty-fold." This week, by putting a gift in the St. Vincent de Paul Poor Box, know that your contribution will produce fruit a hundred-fold. To date, the June 5th Sunday contributions total $948. We thank our parishioners for their continuing generosity.

HOLY SPIRIT PRAYER GROUP

Recently Marlene Kiely returned from a pilgrimage-retreat to the Caritas Community in Sterrett Alabama. Caritas is closely related to another Caritas Community in Medjugorje and is dedicated to promoting Our Lady’s messages for the world. From July 1st, through July 5th, the pilgrimage featured prayers for our country with consecration of America to the Blessed Virgin Mary on the fourth of July. Maria Lunetti, visionary from Medjugorje, continues to receive apparitions and was in Sterrett the entire week. It was a time of great anticipation and grace for thousands of people. On Tuesday, Marlene will share thoughts and impressions of her experience with us. In Chapel, 7:30 PM.
