FROM OUR PASTOR

Dear Parishioners,

It seems that many people continue to talk about the recent elections and its impact on life issues.  I also found it interesting that a recent headline in a local paper read: “Ohio abortion number again declined in ‘07”.  There was the usual back and forth between Ohio Right to Life and NARAL Pro-Choice Ohio representatives as to why.  But what I found most disturbing were the last two paragraphs of that same article:

The Department of Health report did not provide information on income levels of women who obtained abortions last year.  It did, however, show that those with a high school diploma or less underwent nearly two-thirds of the procedures.

Black women, who make up about 12 percent of Ohio’s female population, obtained more than a third of all abortions last year.

That has been one of the points STOP Planned Parenthood: Protect Cincinnati. Org has been trying to make.  Planned Parenthood specifically targets under-educated minority populations based on the eugenics theories of its founder Margaret Sanger: “We do not want word to go out that we want to exterminate the Negro population;” (letter to Clarence J. Gamble, M.D. 12/10/1939; Sanger MS Sophia Smith Collection: Smith College, North Hampton, Mass.).  The Planned Parenthood move to its location near West High certainly seems to fit the statistics provided by the Ohio Department of Health—“those with  a high school diploma or less,” and its founder’s stated philosophy of eugenics.  No matter current politics, the moral imperative of both faith and reason remains: Human life begins at conception.  We are obligated to protect the lives of all of our citizens, especially those most vulnerable in our society.

-- Rev. Christopher R. Armstrong

Father Larry Mick Burse:

A Living Legacy for 60-year Jubilee

A burse is a permanently restricted endowment, with the interest used to help offset the cost of training local seminarians for the priesthood including tuition, room and board – about $30,000 a year. The goal of a burse is to fully endow one seminarian’s formation.

    A burse currently:

    * To be established requires a minimum pledged donation of $25,000.

    * Provides naming opportunity rights – benefactor or honoree, or as a memorial.

    * Is regulated by the board of trustees with interest presently allocated annually at six percent.

Burses may receive additional capital over one’s lifetime, and even beyond, through inclusion in one’s will.  Please make check out to St. Antoninus Parish and mark the memo line “Fr. Mick Burse.”  The actual date of Fr. Mick’s 60th anniversary is March 12, 2009.  We will celebrate it as a parish on Sunday, March 8, 2009, at the 11:30AM Mass.

LITTLE SISTERS OF THE POOR will be at our church doors this weekend, November 15 and 16, collecting donations for the support of their work among the elderly poor.  In order to maintain their home for 94 residents the Sisters go out daily to solicit for their needs.  Please help them with a donation.

Biggs and Kroger Cards are on sale in the church elevator hallway after all weekend Masses, and at the rectory, M-F from 8AM to 3 PM.   These cards are great gifts for the holidays, especially for your employees.  We can pre-order any amount of cards, in any denomination. Call Mrs. Peggy James at 922-5400 for more information.  Look for the Giving Tree on the First Sunday of Advent.

EDUCATION COMMISSION MEETING will be on Monday, November 17, at 7:30PM in the school conference room.  Visitors are always welcome but please call Julie Scott at 922-3015 or juliescott2@hotmail.com if you want to be on the agenda.

PLEASE KEEP THE Handicapped Parking spots free for people who come to our church who are disabled and displaying the Handicapped tag in their vehicles.

FROM OUR PRINCIPAL, MR. JACK COREY

Two weeks ago, I was attending a meeting where the speaker was a big proponent of Lexiles, a measurement used to determine a person’s reading ability.  Since we started using the Measures of Academic Progress (MAP) test, our teachers have become familiar with Lexiles and how they are used to help students improve in reading.

Students can use their Lexile score at home as well.  With a Lexile score, students can look up Internet articles for research at their reading level.  This eliminates seventh graders from deciphering a research piece that was written for Ph.D. students or using an article written for third graders.  Lexiles also help generate a list of books based on students’ interests and their reading levels.

On November 20, there will be a parent information night in the undercroft at 7:00 p.m.  This meeting is designed to teach parents how more profitably to use the results of the MAP testing and Lexiles to help their students.  If you are a parent of a home-school student or your child attends a public school, there are other methods to determine a child’s Lexile score, and this meeting may be beneficial to you as well.  All are invited.

SCHOOL MUSIC DEPARTMENT and First Grade are looking for detached picnic-bench type seating of various heights that holds 6-8 students for the stage.  If you can make such a bench please contact the first grade teachers or Mrs. Milano at 922-2500 or Milano@saintantoninus.org.

You are all invited to a Holiday Help Program scheduled for Saturday, 10:00 AM, November 22nd, in the East Wing of the undercroft.  The goal of this two-hour program is to help all grieving people get through the coming holiday season. FROM DEACON DAVID ENDRES

Now that I am back at the seminary as a full-time student, I have been keeping busy with papers and exams.  Among the classes that I am taking this term, the one that I enjoy the most and find most helpful is titled “Sacraments of Healing” – a study of the Sacraments of Reconciliation and Anointing of the Sick.  Besides studying the history and theology of the sacraments, we also have a practicum component in which we take turns “hearing” confessions and playing the role of the one making the confession; we also play the role of the priest who anoints with the holy oils as well as the sick person who receives the anointing.  Playing both sides has aided in my appreciation of these sacraments, the priest’s role, and the recipient’s participation.  I look forward to my priestly ordination in May when I will no longer have to role-play but can truly administer these sacraments as an instrument of God’s healing.

HOLY SPIRIT PRAYER GROUP:

The booklet written by the late Father Al Lauer called Conversion Conversations has been a great spiritual tool for many as they use it in their prayer life. Over the years, Judy Erwin has found insight, inspiration and encouragement in its pages. She will share some of her thoughts about this great resource for living the Christian life. In Chapel, on Tuesday evening at 7:30PM.
