FROM OUR PASTOR

Dear Parishioners,

Due to Christmas, there were earlier deadlines for the bulletin.  That, I suppose has made me more conscious of upcoming events.

NATIONAL VOCATION WEEK:  Deacon David Endres will be preaching at all the Masses this week-end (1/10-11) to remind us of the importance of praying for and encouraging vocations.  I know I am greatly encouraged when, after the daily 6:45 Mass, I hear, not only prayers for vocations, but also a prayer for the preservation of the clergy in the Lord’s service.  Please consider using the “Called By Name” program by suggesting to a young person to think about a possible call from the Lord to serve His Church.   Single people, grandparents, whole families are encouraged to receive the TRAVELING CHALICE and in its presence, pray for vocations at home.

THE YEAR OF ST. PAUL: Beginning on Friday January 16, our parish will begin its novena to St. Paul with the prayer below.  In particular we are asking for the intercession of St. Paul for our Lenten LIFE IN THE SPIRIT program the last three week-ends in March.   The novena will culminate with the celebration of the Solemnity of St. Paul's Conversion on Sunday, January 25.

Prayer to St. Paul

      Glorious St. Paul,

      Most zealous Apostle,

Martyr for the love of Christ,

      Give us a deep faith,

      A steadfast hope,

      A burning love for our Lord;

So that we can proclaim with you,

“It is no longer I who live, but Christ who lives in

  me”

 Help us to become apostles

Serving the Church with a pure heart,

Witnesses to her truth and beauty

Amidst the darkness of our days.

With you we praise God, our Father:

“To Him be the glory, in the Church and in Christ,

      Now and forever.”  Amen.

NATIONAL CATHOLIC SCHOOLS WEEK:  There will be an open house at our parish school on Sunday, January 25, after the 11:30 Mass.  I would especially encourage parishioners who have not been in our parish school for a while to come.  Saint Antoninus Parish School is a great place to grow as we CELEBRATE SERVICE (this year's theme).

FORTY HOURS will begin after the 8 am Mass on Friday, January 30, and will continue through the night hours and into Saturday.  Please sign up for a time to pray or at the very least stop by for a visit. "COULD YOU NOT SPEND AN HOUR WITH ME?"

MAIN-A-VENT: VALENTINE ROUND UP: This is our parish's major fund-raiser.  It promises to be a fun event.  Invite your friends and purchase a table.  Cowboys, what a great Valentine for your honeybunch!

All of the above makes me very grateful to all who have share their time, talent and treasure with our parish.  As our parish patron, St. Antoninus, would say: "May God reward you."

-- Rev. Christopher R. Armstrong

Father Larry Mick Burse:

A Living Legacy for 60-year Jubilee

A burse is a permanently restricted endowment, with the interest used to help offset the cost of training local seminarians for the priesthood including tuition, room and board – about $30,000 a year. The goal of a burse is to fully endow one seminarian’s formation.  Burses may receive additional capital over one’s lifetime, and even beyond, through inclusion in one’s will.  Please make check out to St. Antoninus Parish and mark the memo line “Fr. Mick Burse.”  The actual date of Fr. Mick’s 60th anniversary is March 12, 2009.  We will celebrate it as a parish on Sunday, March 8, 2009, at the 11:30AM Mass.

THE LESSONS IN CAROLS CD’S are available at the rectory office during normal business hours of 8AM to 3PM, Monday thru Friday.

THANK YOU TO ALL who had donated to the Retirement Fund for Religious.  $7,796.00 has been collected for this appeal.

SAINT ANTONINUS PARISH has been asked to provide refreshments for the dedication of the home on Steiner Ave.  The dedication will take place on Sunday, January 18, at 2:00pm.  If you are able to help, please call Julie Heil at 922-3848.  The dedication is a wonderful event to attend, especially for those who helped on the home, as you see your labor come to fruition.

Biggs and Kroger Gift Cards and the 2008 Enter-tainment and Zone Books are on sale in the church elevator hallway after all weekend Masses, and at the rectory, M-F from 8AM to 3 PM.

ARCHDIOCESAN DECREE ON CHILD PROTECTION ORIENTATION meeting will be on Thurs. Jan. 15, 1PM in the Holy Family Room of the undercroft.

ST. VINCENT DE PAUL SOCIETY

After Jesus was baptized, He saw the Spirit of God descending like a dove and a voice was heard: “This is My beloved Son, with whom I am well pleased.” As we give to the poor, we also can hear these same words. Have you considered joining the Society of St. Vincent de Paul so that you can live your Baptism more fully?

ST. ANTONINUS YARD SIGNS

In preparation for Catholic Schools Week, the school is selling St. Antoninus yard signs. Each sign displays a St. Antoninus jaguar and “A” plus the phrase, “St. Antoninus Parish School – A Great Place to Grow.” If you would like to order a sign, send a check for $5 along with your name and address to the school office. Any questions call Susan Kock at 922-8755 or Jennifer Lambert at 244-1741.

SKATING PARTY will be on Monday, January 19, from 6 to 8:30PM at the Western Rollarama.

FROM DEACON BOB SCHROEDER

On January 1, my family and I attended the Mass for World Peace, downtown at St. Peter-in-Chains Cathedral. After Archbishop Pilarczyk’s homily, he led us in this Peace Pledge:

Just for Today

Today…I will live in peace with God, my neighbor and myself.

Today…I will believe that world peace is possible

Today…I will not be a party to pessimism or join the ranks of the indifferent.

Today…I will love my enemies and pray for them. I will try to see our differences from their point of view.

Today…I will disarm myself of rage by extending my hand in help and forgiveness.

Today…I will know that peace is the child of justice – that peace is more than the absence of war.

Today…I will plant the seed of justice in this global village, in my city, in my neighborhood, in my family and in my heart

Today…I will test my love of peace by doing one act for peace.

Today…I will stand with Christ the Peacemaker, who lives and reigns forever and ever. Amen.

FROM OUR PRINCIPAL, MR. JACK COREY

Dear Parishioners,

Our Terra Nova scores are in and, once again, St. Antoninus School is ranked above the 90th percentile nationally in Reading and Math.  Since this happens every year, being ranked in the 90th percentile in the nation seems to us to be so commonplace and mundane!  But what these scores truly represent is the hard work and dedication of our parents, teachers and most of all our students.  If our students did not do the work, none of this would be possible.

Scores such as these do not just happen.  They happen because our parents are supportive of the work we do, our teachers continually work to provide the best possible education for our students, and our benefactors support us both financially and with their prayers.

On January 25, we mark the start of Catholic Schools Week with our Open House.  Open House starts right after the 11:30 Mass.  All are invited to come and see the good things that are going on at St. Antoninus School.

ADULT SOCIAL GROUP

January 12: Communion Service in chapel at 12:30PM. Entertainment will be a talk by Bob Doolan titled “Batteries Not Included”.

February: “Tax Review” (if possible) All lunch monies are due one week before the lunch date

FROM DEACON DAVID ENDRES

This weekend we celebrate the feast of the Baptism of the Lord.   As we recall the special mission that Christ was given by God the Father  we also begin celebration of National Vocation Awareness Week, a time set aside to discern God’s will and to pray for an increase in vocations to the priesthood and religious life. At each Mass this weekend parishioners are invited to name someone who might make a good priest or religious. Father Armstrong will follow up with those who have been named. Ask the Lord to send us more priestly and religious vocations so that all of our parishes and schools can be shepherded in the years ahead.

HOLY SPIRIT PRAYER GROUP

Due to the stringent economic circumstances this year, many people cut back in their spending for Christmas gifts. However, they were surprised to find that their celebration of this great feast was even more meaningful. Tuesday evening we will spend some time in sharing our Christmas memories both of what Christ did in our lives and the times we shared with our families and friends. Come and be a part of this discussion. In Chapel, 7:30 PM.

THANK YOU FROM ST. FRANCIS SERAPH PARISH: “How wonderful of you to think of our students once again during this Christmas season! The gifts you donated for them will, no doubt, add to their delight on Christmas morning. As you know, many of our students would not have a Christmas if not for the generosity of so many good people like yourselves. During these hard economic times the Kroger gift cards and presents for the students will certainly brighten their holidays…May God bless you and your loved ones for your kindness to our students and their families. We will keep all of you in our daily prayer intentions. Thank you!”

THE ATHLETIC CLUB MEETING will be on January 15th, at 8PM in the undercroft Youth Room.

THANK YOU TO the students in the 1st, 3rd, and 4th grades whose service projects benefit the Ronald McDonald House of Cincinnati.  The students collected 51 pounds of soda pop tabs, 21 boxes of wish list items and gift cards and cash of $100.  Thank you also to Don Freed for transporting the items to the Ronald McDonald House.

GIRLS’ BASKETBALL TRYOUTS will be at 8AM on January 17, for 7th and 8th grades in the gym. Call Ted Nussman at 922-3662 if you have any questions.

Dear Fellow Parishioners,

As Catholic Americans, we are being called to become more engaged in combating these evil attacks against God’s sacred gift of human life, especially in abortion (legal throughout all nine months), the heinous root evil www.youtube.com/watch?v=AR1RD2-fabA www.DuraRealidad.com :“Its scrupulous meanness has had catastrophic effects upon the unity and integrity of the American republic…For the next few years, Gethsemane will not be marginal. We will know that Garden,” (James Frances Cardinal Stafford, Nov. 2008). Cardinal Stafford compared America’s future under out-spoken abortion supporter, President Obama, to Jesus’ agony in the garden, “On November 4, 2008, America suffered a cultural earthquake…the hot, angry tears of betrayal…we now become one with Jesus, sick because of love.” Jesus tells us, “I came that they may have life and have it more abundantly.” (John 10:10) As one of the FREEDOM OF CHOICE ACT (FOCA) co-sponsors, then Senator Barack Obama promised the abortion lobby that this will be the first piece of legislation he will sign into law as President. Under this deceptive title, FOCA would create a new federal right to abortion and would repeal the Hyde Amendment thus allowing unlimited federal tax funding for abortions. FOCA removes all the legal safe-guards (“interferences”) currently put in place in all 50 states since 1973…safeguards that have helped reduce abortions to record lows. It would invalidate all laws requiring: “full disclosure to the patient” (ultrasound images of the unborn child, details about pain inflicted on the baby, about long term complications for the mother); parental notification for a minor daughter seeking an abortion; waiting periods; restrictions based on an unborn child’s viability; protection for doctors and nurses who refuse to perform or assist in an abortion; protections for religiously affiliated hospitals as well as public hospitals that currently do not perform abortions (the head of obstetrics at a large local Catholic hospital told me that they would be forced to close under FOCA); exclusions for abortion coverage from health care plans of federal employees. FOCA would overturn the federal law banning the late term infanticide: partial-birth abortions. Contact your U.S. Senators and Representatives: urge them not only to oppose FOCA but also to take leadership in their opposition.www.House.gov/writerep www.Senate.gov/contacting/index.cfm. Pray.

God is good!

Jane Hoffman

St. Antoninus Pro Life, Pro Family Committee www.SaintAntoninus.org/organizations/prolife.htm

THOSE WHO SUPPORT a woman’s supposed “right” to end the life of her unborn child might want to reflect on how they will be able to explain their position to the victims of abortion when we meet them face to face in the next life – which we most certainly will.
