FROM OUR PASTOR

Dear Parishioners,

From time to time in the "Clergy Communications," Fr. Tom DiFolco, the Director of the Office of Priestly Formation sends us an article to read.  In the January edition, he sent us an article entitled "Question Marks."  I found it a fascinating read.  The author points out how frequently someone's life is changed by a thoughtful and thought-provoking question.  One of the more famous questions came from Jesus to St. Paul: "Saul! Saul! Why do you persecute Me?"  "Saul" became "Paul" surrendering, as he did, his life to the Lord.  I suppose that because we dedicated our novena to St. Paul for a fresh outpouring of the Holy Spirit during the Lenten Life in the Spirit seminars in March, the following story from that same article caught my attention as well: "A friend, now in heaven, used to call me frequently.  Each time he would initiate our conversation with 'Are you filled with the Holy Spirit today?' The first time or two I was slightly irritated until it occurred to me that his might be among the best question one friend can ask another.  From that time on, when I anticipated a call from him, I found myself examining my heart so that I could offer an honest response."  So how 'bout it: are you filled with the Holy Spirit today?  Consider the Lenten Life in the Spirit seminar so that you can offer a resounding YES! as did St. Paul on the road to Damascus.

CATHOLIC SCHOOL BENEFACTORS: I want to extend to all of our benefactors my heartfelt thanks for your support in sustaining our parish school.  Such support comes from donors to the Tuition Assistance Program, the matching grants to the Parish Support Program and the School Endowment Fund.  Each Friday when our parish school is in session, the children offer a prayer of thanksgiving for your generosity.

PLEASE SIGN UP FOR 40 HOURS!

I look forward to seeing you at the Main A-vent: Valentine Roundup on Saturday, February 14!

-- Rev. Christopher R. Armstrong

ANSWER THE CALL: Catholic Men’s Conference tickets are available thru Deacon Bob Schroeder at 922-4759 by Monday, February 2.  Tickets are $40 each.  Only tickets requested will be ordered.

PLENARY INDULGENCES

In honor of the Year of St. Paul, the Holy Father has offered a plenary indulgence to those who fulfill the following requirements: “The Christian faithful of the various local Churches, having fulfilled the required

conditions (sacramental Confession, Eucharistic Communion, prayers for the Supreme Pontiff's intentions) and in a spirit of total detachment from any inclination to sin, may benefit from the Plenary Indulgence if they take part devoutly in a sacred function or in a pious public exercise in honor of the Apostle to the Gentiles; on the days of the solemn opening and closure of the Pauline Year, in all the sacred places; on other days specified by the local Ordinary, in holy places dedicated to St. Paul and, for the convenience of the faithful, in other places designated by the same Ordinary.”

Archbishop Pilarczyk has established several parish churches a person may visit to fulfill the requirements for an indulgence: Sts. Peter and Paul, Reading; St. Teresa of Avila, Cincinnati; St. Paul, Englewood; St. Paul, Yellow Springs; Sts. Peter and Paul, Newport; St. Paul, Sharpsburg.  Persons wishing to make a visit should contact the parish for information on the hours the parish church is open.

In addition to visiting one of these parishes, the Archbishop is also designating participation in Solemn Vespers on the Feast of the Conversion of St. Paul on January 25, 2009 at the Athenaeum of Ohio/Mount St. Mary’s Seminary at 7:30 p.m., and Solemn Vespers for the Feast of Sts. Peter and Paul on June 28, 2009, at St. Paul, Englewood, as two other options for fulfilling the requirements.

The plenary indulgence is fulfilled by sacramental Confession, Eucharistic Communion, prayers for the Holy Father, plus doing one of the above options. The plenary indulgence may be obtained only one time per day.

REMEMBER: 40 HOURS

St. Antoninus will observe 40 Hours of adoration of the Blessed Sacrament on the weekend of January 30th through February 1st.  Please sign up for a half-hour of adoration on the sign-up sheet in the greeting room.

Father Larry Mick Burse:

A Living Legacy for 60-year Jubilee

A burse is a permanently restricted endowment, with the interest used to help offset the cost of training local seminarians for the priesthood including tuition, room and board – about $30,000 a year. The goal of a burse is to fully endow one seminarian’s formation.  Burses may receive additional capital over one’s lifetime, and even beyond, through inclusion in one’s will.  Please make check out to St. Antoninus Parish and mark the memo line “Fr. Mick Burse.”  The actual date of Fr. Mick’s 60th anniversary is March 12, 2009.  We will celebrate it as a parish on Sunday, March 8, 2009, at the 11:30AM Mass.

ALL LITURGICAL MINISTERS are invited to gather for the 8AM Mass and adoration on Saturday, January 31.  We will move to the undercroft for coffee and donuts and a talk by Deacon David Endres about the writings of St. Paul.  An RSVP at 922-4759 is helpful, but not required.

ALL MARRIED COUPLES CELEBRATING THEIR 25th, 50th, 60th, 70th and 75th Wedding Anniversaries during this year of 2009 should call the rectory office at 922-5400, Monday – Friday from 8AM to 3PM.  Leave your name, address, wedding date and phone number by March 6.

2009 GOLDEN WEDDING ANNIVERSARY MASS at Saint Peter in Chains Cathedral will be on Saturday, May 2, at 2PM.  Principal celebrant will be Archbishop Daniel E. Pilarczyk.

THE LESSONS IN CAROLS CD’S are available at the rectory office during normal business hours of 8AM to 3PM, Monday thru Friday.

FROM OUR PRINCIPAL, MR. JACK COREY

Dear Parishioners,

This Sunday marks the start of Catholic Schools Week.  The theme for Catholic Schools Week is Catholic Schools Celebrate Service.  During this week our students will be decorating their classroom doors.  Each grade was assigned a particular theme, such as feed the hungry, care for the sick, etc.  The art work on the doors will reflect the activities that we do as a school, parish, and/or activities we can do at home.  Examples of these could be the canned food drive, Habitat for Humanity, Ronald McDonald House activities, and recycling.

During this week, we also wish to thank those who serve others.  We thank everyone who serves our school, our parish, others less fortunate, and definitely those who serve our country.  May this week remind us all we are here on Earth to love and serve God.

All are welcome to our Open House after the 11:30 Mass.  New student registration is next week after all Sunday Masses.

ST. ANTONINUS YARD SIGNS

In preparation for Catholic Schools Week, the school is selling St. Antoninus yard signs.  Each sign displays a St. Antoninus jaguar and “A” plus the phrase, “St. Antoninus Parish School – A Great Place to Grow.”  If you would like to order a sign, send a check for $5 along with your name and address to the school office.  Any questions call Susan Kock at 922-8755 or Jennifer Lambert at 244-1741.

FROM DEACON DAVID ENDRES

This past week, I was among thirty seminarians from Mount St. Mary’s that participated in the annual March for Life in Washington, D.C.  Despite the occasion that we are marking – 36 years of legal abortion - it is always a hopeful and upbeat gathering of tens of thousands of pro-lifers.  While I have been to the march nine out of the last ten years, I am always amazed by the youthfulness of the marchers. The high school and college students in attendance are a wonderful witness to the importance of pro-life work since, after all, each of their own mothers “chose life” for them.  Pray for an end to abortion and the conversion of our culture which fosters neglect for human life.

HOLY SPIRIT PRAYER GROUP

Perhaps you’ve heard reports concerning surveys that reveal how few Catholics actually believe that the Sacred Host is truly the Body of Christ. Do you agree? Fr. Benedict Groeschel’s video Eucharist as the Real Presence proves them wrong. In his inimicable way, Father lays out the facts concisely and often with great humor. His teaching is always sound and thought- provoking. Believers and doubters alike should see this. In Chapel, Tuesday 7:30 PM.

LOST - Gold filigree pin (about 1 1/4" in diameter) with tiny center diamond lost on January 3rd at St. Antoninus church/parking lot or O'Charley's after 4:30 p.m. Mass. If found please contact Mary Lynne Rapien, 922-0902.

LAST CHANCE TO BUY YOUR 2009 ENTERTAINMENT OR ZONE BOOKS! Still only $20 each. Sale ends Sunday, January 25th! Books are sold daily at the rectory, after all weekend Masses with the Kroger/Biggs cards, or call Larry Hurley at 608-7604.

THE FREEDOM OF CHOICE ACT (FOCA) would “outlaw any ‘interference’ in providing abortion at will. It would deprive the American people in all fifty states of the freedom they now have to enact modest restraints and regulations on the abortion industry. FOCA would coerce all Americans into subsidizing and promoting abortion with their tax dollars. It would counteract any and all sincere efforts by government and others of good will to reduce the number of abortions in our country.” Statement by USCCB President Cardinal Francis George on behalf of the USCCB, 11/12/2008

WHEN DOES A NEW HUMAN LIFE BEGIN? When is there a new living organism of the human species, distinct from mother and father and ready to develop and mature if given a nurturing environment? While ancient thinkers had little verifiable knowledge to help them answer this question, today the science of embryology confirms beyond a doubt that a new human life begins at conception.
