FROM OUR PASTOR

Dear Parishioners,

In the fifth grade, I had "Septuagesima" as a spelling word.  I got it wrong.  Even now, I have to look at it to be sure I spelt it correctly.  I mention the word for its meaning, "seventy."   Some of our parishioners may remember the word also designated a Sunday, a kind of count -down to the forty days of Lent in preparation for Easter.  Even though Lent may seem to be a bit far off, it is never too early to think about your Easter duty.  The Easter duty is that the faithful are to receive Holy Communion at least once a year between Ash Wednesday and Trinity Sunday.  Its corollary is to make a sincere confession so that one may receive the Eucharist worthily.  St. Augustine reminds us that even if we are not conscious of mortal sin, we should not disregard our venial sins, which he compares to grains of sand.  Even though they are small, once they pile up by weight and number, they can crush just about anything.  And St. Augustine further reminds us, that when it comes to our sins, we should at least find displeasing which God Himself abhors.  Finally, we need to expose the tricks of the devil.  If he does not succeed in convincing us that he does not exist and that our sins aren't really all that bad, he tries to fill us with such fear and anxiety that we think our sins can never be forgiven, and that we will just keep repeating them anyway. Either way, the devil wins and keeps us from our share in the victory of Jesus Christ.  Going to confession is not just good for the soul but good for the world; for, by opening our hearts to the Holy Spirit in the Sacrament of Penance, we serve the family of mankind.  Going to confession is something to consider these seventy days before Easter.

Father Larry Mick Burse:

A Living Legacy for 60-year Jubilee

A burse is a permanently restricted endowment, with the interest used to help offset the cost of training local seminarians for the priesthood including tuition, room and board – about $30,000 a year. The goal of a burse is to fully endow one seminarian’s formation.

    A burse currently:

    * To be established requires a minimum pledged donation of $25,000.

    * Provides naming opportunity rights – benefactor or honoree, or as a memorial.

    * Is regulated by the board of trustees with interest presently allocated annually at six percent.

Burses may receive additional capital over one’s lifetime, and even beyond, through inclusion in one’s will.  Please make check out to St. Antoninus Parish and mark the memo line “Fr. Mick Burse.”  The actual date of Fr. Mick’s 60th anniversary is March 12, 2009.  We will celebrate it as a parish on Sunday, March 8, 2009, at the 11:30AM Mass.

THE LESSONS IN CAROLS CD’S are available at the rectory office during normal business hours of 8AM to 3PM, Monday thru Friday.

VALENTINE ROUND-UP GALA will be on Saturday, February 14th, in the undercroft.  Deadline for tickets is now Tuesday February 10th.   Live auction, Silent Auction, Gambling

FROM OUR PRINCIPAL, MR. JACK COREY

Dear Parishioners,

I am happy to announce that our new student registration was very successful.  Thank you to all the people who helped with the signs, pamphlets, and letters that went out.  This year’s kindergarten registration has exceeded expectations.  Along with an additional fifth grade class, we are considering adding a third kindergarten again.

With our eighth graders exceeding the quarter of a million dollars in scholarship offers for high school and our Terra Nova test scores being at or above the 90th percentile nationally it is easy to demonstrate our academic success.  What is equally impressive, but not as tangible is our religious education and sacramental preparation.  T one who has not experienced a child receiving sacramental preparation in our second grade or in our seventh grade, it would be difficult to describe how well our students are trained.

The dishonest practices that have come to light during these recent economic woes clearly demonstrate that highly educated people acting outside of an objective morality is destructive.  At St. Antoninus we work to educate not only academically but morally as well.  Please share with your neighbors how important a religious education is, not just for the individual, but also for our nation.

If you or someone you know is considering registering at St. Antoninus, please have them contact us soon as possible.

FROM DEACON DAVID ENDRES

Shortly after taking office, the president revoked an important pro-life, pro-family measure known as the “Mexico City Policy.”  First adopted by President Ronald Reagan in 1984, the policy previously denied funding from the U.S. Agency for International Development to international organizations that perform, promote, or lobby for the legalization of abortion. The primary beneficiaries of this change will be the International Planned Parenthood Federation that will now receive federal dollars to promote abortion where it is legal, and lobby for its legalization where it is not.  We must continue to pray for our government leaders to support pro-life measures and not further  the culture of death.

MARRIAGE ENCOUNTER WEEKEND will be on March 20-22, at the Dayton Airport Hotel. For reserva-tions call 1-800-547-1251 code.

ST. VINCENT DE PAUL SOCIETY

In today's First Reading, Job states that his days have "come to an end without hope" and that he "shall not see happiness again." Many of those served by the St. Vincent Society could say the same. The contribution you place in our poor boxes will help us begin their hope and happiness.

HOLY SPIRIT PRAYER GROUP

Have you noticed how easy it is to be drawn into thinking as the world thinks about certain issues? Try these: teenage sex and condoms, gay marriage, living together before marriage, voting for politicians who promote or give approval to abortion and keeping religion out of politics. These are just a few of the issues that will always find defenders among those we know. It is hard not to get drawn into agreement. On Tuesday, Kay Schmidl’s talk “It’s a Wild World” will try to explain this modern secularist approach to life. She explains how easy it is to get caught up. The following week her second talk will help us to see how we fight theses trends. Both talks were well-received at the Bible Institute last summer. Don’t miss them. In Chapel, 7:30 PM.
