FROM OUR PASTOR

Dear Parishioners,

If Septuagesima was a challenge for me to spell in the fifth grade, Sexagesima (sixty days before Easter, which this Sunday is) was right up there with it.   Recently, I heard Jeff

Zaslow speak on the "Last Lecture" which he co-authored with Randy Pausch.  You may have seen Randy's final lecture somewhere on the internet or on TV.  Once again I heard Mr. Zaslow say what I have heard so many times before, do not wait to tell the people you love that you love them.  Despite all its commercialism, St. Valentine's Day is a good reminder to do just that.  And the Lord does it for us especially in his sacraments.  For example, who can imagine the love summed up in the word: "I absolve you from your sins?"   Going to confession at least once a year is a duty of all Catholics.  But it ought not to be any more a "duty" then to say "I love you" is a duty.  Going to confession is not just good for the soul, freeing us from our sins but even more to hear the Lord say "I love you" ...more than we can ever ask or imagine.

MAIN-A-VENT: Valentine Round-up:  There are so many people to thank; I don't know where to begin. I am deeply grateful to the Committee who organized the event, to all of our donors and sponsors and to all who supported our worthy cause.  It is yet another wonderful reminder that St. Antoninus is a great place to grow in the Lord and in love for our neighbors.

LIFE IN THE SPIRIT SEMINAR:  Do you desire a deeper relationship with our Lord and His Church? The Life in the Spirit Seminar is a program of six sessions, March 14/15, 21/22 and 27/28 to help the seeker to come to know the Lord our God better.  The seminars do build on one another so it would be important to plan to come to all of the sessions.  However, I believe the teaching portion will be taped for those who might have to miss one. Ask yourself if the Lord is calling you to participate in the sessions.  He will find you the time and see to the details, if indeed you are.  "Come to Me all you who are weary and find life burdensome and I will refresh you."

-- Rev. Christopher R. Armstrong

The Catholic Parishes Pro-life Coalition will meet on Thursday, Feb. 19, in the church undercroft east wing area at 7 p.m.  Jack Hart, President of Cinti. Right to Life, and Steve Driehaus will speak.  For more info, call 922-0348.

Father Larry Mick Burse:

A Living Legacy for 60-year Jubilee

A burse is a permanently restricted endowment, with the interest used to help offset the cost of training local seminarians for the priesthood including tuition, room and board – about $30,000 a year. The goal of a burse is to fully endow one seminarian’s formation.

    A burse currently:

    * To be established requires a minimum pledged donation of $25,000.

    * Provides naming opportunity rights – benefactor or honoree, or as a memorial.

    * Is regulated by the board of trustees with interest presently allocated annually at six percent.

Burses may receive additional capital over one’s lifetime, and even beyond, through inclusion in one’s will.  Please make check out to St. Antoninus Parish and mark the memo line “Fr. Mick Burse.”  The actual date of Fr. Mick’s 60th anniversary is March 12, 2009.  We will celebrate it as a parish on Sunday, March 8, 2009, at the 11:30AM Mass.

THE LESSONS IN CAROLS CD’S are available at the rectory office during normal business hours of 8AM to 3PM, Monday thru Friday.

Biggs and Kroger Gift Cards are on sale in the church elevator hallway after all weekend Masses, and at the rectory, M-F from 8AM to 3 PM.

FROM OUR PRINCIPAL, MR. JACK COREY

Dear Parishioners,

This week we had Tom Sparough “The Space Man” perform.  He is a juggler who tells stories with a Catholic message.  His message kept with our theme this year on service to others.  He told the parable of the Good Samaritan and talked about one of his favorite saints, Saint John Bosco.  As he told his stories, he wove juggling into each story.

Currently our kindergarten has 45 student registered for next year.  This is ten more students than we have this year.  If you know of anyone who is thinking about registering at our school, please have them call the school at 922-2500.

LaRosa Buddy Cards are now being sold by the 8th grade to raise money for their field trip to Columbus.  The cards are $10.00 each and are valid until February 2010.  Please contact an 8th grader or call JoAnn Gay 922-7705(home) or 470-6349 (cell).

SAINT VINCENT DE PAUL SOCIETY

In today’s second reading, Paul advises the Corinthians, “Whether you eat or drink, or whatever you do, do everything for the glory of God.”  That’s good advice for us too.  We can help our neighbors in distress for the glory of God.  The six poor boxes at the church doors await your contributions for this worthy cause.

YOUTH CLUB EVENTS

FROM DEACON DAVID ENDRES

Training for the priesthood involves theoretical and sometimes abstract theological elements as well as more practical ones. For the last two months I have been practicing Mass – learning the gestures, postures, words and chants of the Eucharistic liturgy. This is one of the final aspects of training for priest-hood and one of the more practical ones. The final exam for the course on the Mass is a “test Mass” in which other seminarians will play the roles of cantor, lector, servers, and congregation members and we deacons who are nearing ordination will play the role of celebrant. Pray for my classmates and me as we practice leading the Church’s worship in preparation for priestly ordination this May.

HOLY SPIRIT PRAYER GROUP

Last week, Kay Schmidl, in her talk, “It’s a Wild World” pointed out how easy it is to be swept up into thinking as the world does about life issues. When we don’t go along and approve of modern secularism we are called “Christian fanatics.” This week her teaching “Where Do We Go from Here?” gives us facts about how and why we are to fight against the false values of the world. The ortho-doxy of our Catholic faith gives us bed-rock truth to stand on and supports us in our fight for truth and jus-tice. As St. Paul exhorted the Ephesians 6:10-11, we are to “put on the armor of God so that you may be able to stand firm against the tactics of the devil.” Come and take courage. In Chapel, 7:30 P.M. Tues-day.
