FROM OUR PASTOR

I was at the Morning Star Retreat House in Pinecrest, Florida, for a few days.  Joining their property was St. Louis Church, which had Perpetual   Exposition of the Blessed Sacrament.  I was amazed at their Eucharistic fervor:  Young and old, men and women, Black, White and Hispanic.  Often there was standing room only.   My favorite person was a little girl who sat on a step next to the altar, and, in a sing-song voice read Jesus a story and with a big smile loudly said "The End". She then went and sat next to an older woman and asked her about her rosary.  Then she returned to the step and waited quietly until her mother finished her prayers.  I couldn’t help thinking of the Lord's injunction: "Unless you become like little children..." and how delighted He must have been with that little girl's utter simplicity, her complete comfort in His Presence.  Such be for all of us, a real possibility during Lent when we can desire to renew our baptismal promise to reject sin and live for God, to do penance, to make up what is lacking in ourselves and in the sufferings of Christ, as St. Paul tells us.  One way to do that is to make a sincere and holy confession and with a firm purpose of amendment, resolve to become like a little child.

-- Rev. Christopher R. Armstrong

Good Friday, April 10, is a day of abstinence from meat and also a day of fast, that is, limited to a single full meal.

Let the paschal fast be kept sacred.  Let it be celebrated everywhere on Good Friday and, where possible, prolonged throughout Holy Saturday, so that the joys of the Sunday of the Resurrection may be attained with uplifted and clear mind (Constitution on the Liturgy, No.110).  The other Fridays of the season of Lent are days of abstinence from meat.  The law of abstinence binds all Catholics 14 years and older.  The law of fasting binds all Catholics from their 18th birthday until their 59th birthday (Canons 97 and 1252).  The teaching of Pope John Paul II may be simply paraphrased:  the obligation to do penance is a serious one; the obligation to observe, as a whole or “substantially”, the penitential days specified by the Church is also serious.  No one should be scrupulous in this regard; failure to observe an individual day of penance is not considered serious.  People should seek to do more rather than less.  Fast and abstinence on the days prescribed should be considered a minimum response to the Lord’s call to penance and conversion.

CATHOLIC MINISTRIES APPEAL

The weekend of March 14 - 15 will be Catholic Ministries Appeal Weekend here at St. Antoninus.  God calls each of us to share our gifts with others for the building up of His kingdom.  The theme for the 2009 CMA is “Do Gratitude…Say Thanks by Giving.” Archbishop Pilarczyk is asking every Catholic household to participate in this year’s 2009 Catholic Ministries Appeal, which funds the many programs and services of our Archdiocese.  The 2009 Catholic Ministries Appeal is to our regional ministries as the weekly offertory is to our parish - so your participation and support is critical!  On March 7 and 8, we will have the 2009 Catholic Ministries Appeal Announcement Weekend; we will be playing an audio message detailing the Appeal and asking every Catholic household to make a pledge.  Please begin to prayerfully consider how you will participate.  Every gift matters. For info see  www.CatholicAppeal.info.

From the Business Manager

I will be leaving St. Antoninus at the end of April.  I have been offered an opportunity to return to P&G.  Personally and professionally I look forward to this change.  I will, though, miss the wonderful people I have had the pleasure of working with and the families that have been so supportive of my role.  St. Antoninus Parish is truly the best kept secret in Western Hills.  The families are so generous with their time and talents, the campus is beautiful and the church and school are alive with the Catholic faith.  A job posting and search will begin shortly.

- Peggy James

FROM OUR PRINCIPAL, MR. JACK COREY

Dear Parishioners,

Kudos to those who organized, volunteered, and donated items in order to make the St. Antoninus Main-A-vent a success.  Events like this one allow the parish to subsidize the Catholic education our students are receiving.  St. Antoninus Parish is committed to keeping our parish school affordable while providing a top academic and Catholic education.

Events which require volunteers such as the Fish Fry coming up soon, our Jog-A-Thon, parish clean-up, and the festival all provide us an opportunity to come together as a community outside of Mass.  I encourage everyone to volunteer for at least one parish activity.  While working with others in the parish, you will feel engaged, you will meet great people, and you will feel better about your parish when you are done.

HOLY SPIRIT PRAYER GROUP

If we consider the beauty of the visible creation around us, we are drawn into a feeling of awe for the invisible God who created it and us. Such awe is a gift of the Holy Spirit known as “fear of the Lord.” It is not actual fear but is simply recognition of the magnitude of His superior wisdom as opposed to our nothingness. This is the beginning of all of the gifts of the Holy Spirit that we receive in Confirmation. On Tuesday, Mary Handermann will teach about under-standing this great gift in her talk, Fear of the Lord. This gift draws us into prayer from the heart. Hear about it in Chapel 7:30 PM.

CELEBRATE SETON will be on Sunday, March 8, from noon to 5PM in the new gym, Commons Area and the Multi Purpose Room. All grade school girls in attendance will receive a surprise gift! The Spirit Wear Shop will be open. For info go to www.setoncincinnati.org.

Why Attend a Life in the Spirit Seminar?

This is a good question to ask yourself at this time because one is coming to your parish in March! What is a Life in the Spirit Seminar (LISS) and why would you need or want to attend one? Do you wonder what a life in the Spirit looks like? Who is living it? Well I ask you to stop now and look in the mirror, for to some degree, large or small, you are living life in the Spirit if you are a con-firmed Catholic or have a firm faith in God’s Salvation Plan for His children. It is now up to us as individuals to now define the degree of spiritual life that we enter into and a Life in the Spirit Seminar is de-signed to assist you in this work. God created us to be in community with Him. His love for us includes a deep desire to have us with Him. Remember the Garden of Eden, He visited it daily, walking with Adam and Eve, talking to them, loving them in a very present and real way. I am in awe of this thought; the God who created the universe wants to be with us and have us be with Him. Humbling, yet cause for much celebration, isn’t it? How often do we remember this in our daily lives; how of-ten do we live as though we desire God as much as He desires us? We have the opportunity every day to deepen our relationship with our God, our Creator and King and thankfully our Catholic faith gives us many ways to make that happen.

As Catholics we are fortunate to have the Seven Sacraments.  Think about what our Sacraments of Initiation really mean.  Our Sacrament of Baptism is also called “the washing of regeneration and renewal by the Holy Spirit” (CCC 1215).  At our Baptism we are not only cleansed of our original sin but we receive the gifts of the Holy Spirit in the Bath of Enlightenment (CCC 1216), our souls are enlightened as to our salvation, what it means to us and how we need to accept it.   Our souls welcome the Holy Spirit in, and He takes up residence within us.   We now have within us the grace of justification which enables us to believe in God, have hope in Him and this same grace brings us the power to live and act under the prompting of the Holy Spirit through the gifts of the Holy Spirit (CCC 1266).  We become members of the Body of Christ, the Catholic Church.  When we are baptized as infants our parents, godparents and our church take the responsibility upon themselves to inform our minds of what our souls already know.

We receive at our First Holy Communion the food of Salvation, the source and summit of the Christian life (CCC1324).   It is our spiritual food which strengthens us and renews us as often as we partake.  Think about it, we are able to now touch our Savior, take Him within, and allow Him to change us, remake us, and complete us.  The Eucharist is “the culmination both of God’s action sanctifying the world in Christ and of the worship men offer to Christ and through Him to the Father in the Holy Spirit.” (CCC1325).  In my study of the Old Testament I have learned that one reason the Jewish faith does not allow any contact with blood is because pagans, in their sacrificial meals, partake of both the body and blood of the animals or people they sacrifice.  They partake of the blood for one reason I found very interesting, as they partake of the blood they believed that they took within themselves the essence of the sacrificed.   If a lion or bull were sacrificed imagine the power and vitality the pagans believed they received from the sacrificed.  What do we do at the Eucharistic Table?  We partake of the blood of Christ.  He asks us to do this for the same reason.  He wants us to take into ourselves His holy essence, to change us, feed us in all the ways necessary for us to continue His kingdom’s work on earth.  We need this food in order to become more and more like Christ, leave our sinful hearts behind and allow Him to truly change our entire being into a more perfect image of the Risen Christ.

At our Confirmation we receive the completion of our baptismal grace.  We are more perfectly bound to the Church and enriched with the special strength of the Holy Spirit (CCC1285).   The Bishop anoints us with the Sacred Chrism which seals us with an indelible spiritual mark upon our souls, clothing us with the power to become witnesses to our God, Jesus Christ.  Without Baptism and Confirmation we could not in truth proclaim the Good News of Christ.

These sacraments have been given to us to bring us into communion with God the Father, Son and Holy Spirit.  When Adam and Even sinned we lost our natural heritage of sanctifying grace and original sin entered our souls.  But our God in His infinite goodness has provided for us the path to take to bring us back into relationship with Him through these sacraments.  As with all relationships it is possible to allow a warm relationship to grow cold.  Many are the things that can interfere with a strong relationship with God; the reasons are as myriad as the stars in the sky and as individual as your DNA.  That is why a Life in the Spirit Seminar can be valuable to you.  The graces that the Sacraments of Initiation give us are still within us, but many of us have allowed them to grow dormant and cold.

Attending a Life in the Spirit Seminar should be thought of as a life changing experience because it most certainly is just that and more.  After the seminar is completed a participant can be assured that the Lord’s presence in their life will be more immediate and vibrant than ever before;  for accepting the Lord’s call to attend this seminar is in many ways just a prayer to God to make that very thing happen and our Lord loves to answer our prayers.  Our God desires to have us with Him, to see us live within His will for our lives.  Our Lord intends for good things to happen to us and living consciously within His will for our lives will bring those things to us in abundance.    As you attend the seminar you will be reminded of the role the Holy Spirit plays in your life, and find that as far as you ran or as close as you stayed to your faith, the Holy Spirit was always with you, waiting for you to turn and ask Him to come to full power in your life.  The Holy Spirit wishes with all the love He possesses to offer eternal life and salvation through the Lord Jesus Christ and the benefits a life lived in God’s Holy Will can provide.  I pray that after hearing this call your answer will be YES, Lord, let this be for me!

Here is the information you will need to make your prayerful decision.  Your parish is being offered the Life in the Spirit Seminar on the following dates:

March 14/15, March 21/22 and March 28/29, 2009 as a Lenten Mission experience from your pastor, Father Armstrong.  The Living Waters Prayer Group of

St. Maximilian Kolbe Parish, West Chester, will be facilitating the seminar.  We have been praying for all of you for almost a year now.  We are neither experts nor professionals at seminar facilitation; what we are is a group of people who have all attended LISS over the years and found them to be just as described above, life changing experiences.  We have been giving these seminars in our area for seven years now and feel so blessed to have been called upon to present this seminar to you, our neighbors.  It is a privilege to have been asked and we have been working hard all winter to make this seminar all it can be for you and your parish community.   We thank our Lord for this opportunity and look forward to meeting you all!

And so I invite you, come, hear of the wonderful things our Lord has in store for your life, take this journey with a group of your friends and fellow parishioners and begin to walk with more freedom and joy in the Light of the Lord, the Holy Spirit of God.  Come, we pray, and let us, the Living Waters Prayer Group share what we have been given, a closer walk and more blessed life with our God, the Father, Son and Holy Spirit.

For questions please call:    Judy Erwin at 451-2908, Kate Hein at 922-8587 or Karen Klaene 922-3379.

Holy Family Parish, Cincinnati is seeking a full-time Director of Maintenance.  Managerial skills and ability to maintain buildings and equipment required. Previous maintenance and supervisory experience is necessary. A fingerprinting/background check and attendance at an Archdiocesan Child Protection Class are required for employment.  Please send your resume and contact info to: Fr. James Kiffmeyer, Holy Family, 3006 West 8th Street, Cincinnati, OH  45205 or email to holyfamily@fuse.net.

Dear Fellow Parishioners,

A 7th grader speaks up, wins and wows the judges: www.youtube.com/watch?v=wOR1wUqqvJS4&feature=channel-page. Using her as a young role model, we see she’s an articulate witness to the urgency of re-establishing our God-given right to life.

Another role model, Lila Rose is a college student at UCLA.  She’s also a pro-life student activist who founded and is president of Live Action which spreads a pro life message to young people and conducts student-led investigations the results of which are released through www.Live Action Films.org   Recent investigations received national attention when they exposed racism and patterns of sexual abuse cover-up at Planned Parenthood abortion facilities.  This college student has been a frequent guest on radio and television programs, including The O’Reilly Factor, Hannity’s America and The Laura Ingraham Show.  This work has led to criminal investigations of the abortion industry.  FYI she’ll be the keynote speaker April 23, at Pregnancy Center East Banquet for Life.

Role models.  With Lent beginning, a retreat priest asks us to consider:  “What does it mean to be a disciple, a follower, of Jesus Christ?”  Being committed to Christ brings joys and challenges for each of us so we ask ourselves, “Do I believe and trust Jesus words, His Church enough to live by them?”

Using Our Blessed Mother as the “Number One Role Model Disciple”, we are called to be faithful, fearless, proclaiming, joyful and forgiving. For family discussion, consider ways that different members/ages can be a follower of Jesus and a role model to others.  What specific steps can your family implement to bring about the Gospel of Life and shed light onto the culture of death that is promoting abortion, infanticide, euthanasia (recently legalized in two states and federally repackaged in ‘rationed healthcare’). Truth is on the march and it will not be stopped.   God is good!  Jane Hoffman, St. Antoninus Pro Life Pro Family Committee
