FROM OUR PASTOR

It is still not too late to write our Ohio Senator and Representatives  about restoring the Principle of Parity to non-public school funding.  The Principle of Parity means that whatever percentage of increase or decrease happens in public school funding, the same happens to non-public school funding.  If money for non public schools is flat funded, then it would mean tuition for all nonpublic schools would rise and /or services would be cut.  But the issue is much larger than the current budget.  It is also a first amendment issue.  Although many claim that the first amendment is about separation of church and state, it is really saying "Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion or prohibit the free exercise thereof;..."  It means that the government should not interfere with the religious affairs of its people nor prohibit them from exercising their beliefs freely.  Until now, the State of Ohio has done a great deal for its taxpaying citizens who choose to send their children to a non-public school, including parochial schools.  It would be a shame to make it more difficult for them to do so.  Please help us come to the aid of our school parents and ask that the Principle of Parity be restored.  God bless the Great State of Ohio.

-- Rev. Christopher R. Armstrong

2009 CATHOLIC RELIEF SERVICES

COLLECTION IN APRIL

The State Department estimates that nearly 5 million people have been displaced, forced to leave their homes, because of the war in Iraq.  The Catholic Relief Services Collection supports resettlement services for refugees, serves victims of human trafficking and provides pastoral care and advocacy.  Of the 50,000 total refugees authorized to enter the United States in 2007, nearly one-third were helped by USCCB Migration and Refugee Services.  Collection envelopes are included in the April packet.

FROM OUR PRINCIPAL, MR. JACK COREY

Dear Parishioners,

When prospective families come to our school, I am delighted to share our academic achievements, sacramental prep and religion classes, the technology in the school, and student opportunities both here at school and through the parish organizations.  But what makes our parish and school great for families are the people here.  St. Antoninus has a history of parishioner generosity.

As with everything, as soon as any entity becomes complacent and satisfied with the status quo, it begins to atrophy.  This can be true with our parish as well.  As I listen to parishioners at school, athletic club, PTO and other gatherings, one concern seems to permeate all organizations, the lack of volunteers.

St. Antoninus Parish is comprised of approximately 1,450 families.  If every family made a commitment to volunteer 6 hours and 3 minutes per year, we would have enough volunteer time to cover every minute of every day for the entire year.  How much more would we get accomplished with that kind of volunteerism.  How much lighter the load for those who already volunteer and make St. Antoninus a better place for all. Volunteering does not just provide extra opportunities for all.  When we volunteer, we connect with others in the parish and, as a consequence, our parish life improves.  When we feel more connected to our parish we are more connected to our church and our faith.  St. Antoninus has an extensive history of volunteerism.

Please commit your family to volunteer at least 6 hours per year to any parish organization.  The front of the bulletin has contact names and numbers for the different organizations.  Feel free to call and volunteer.  This will help keep St. Antoninus a great parish.

Tuition Assistance (TAP, ESAP, PSAS)

Important Information!

If you wish to apply for an ESAP scholarship or financial aid, applications must be submitted by May 1.  If you are going to be in 8th grade next year at the parish school, you are eligible to compete for an ESAP Scholarship.  ESAP is the Elder Scholars Assistance Program – a privately-funded grant program administrated by Elder High School.  One 7th grade girl and one 7th grade boy will be chosen from our school.  Applications are available on the Elder website: www.elderhs.org.  Once there, click “Parents” on the top banner and then on the Parents page, click “ESAP” on the left side.  Scholarship applications are due May 1, 2009.

ESAP financial aid awards are available to families with students entering the 5th-8th grade at the parish school next year.  Awards range from $100-500 and are based on need as assessed by PSAS.  The application can be accessed via the Elder website www.elderhs.org.  Once there, click “Parents” on the top banner and then on the Parents page, click “ESAP” on the left side.  There is a $21 application fee.  If you have completed the PSAS form for another school, you will automatically be considered for ESAP awards.  There is nothing further you need to do.  Aid applications are due to PSAS by May 1, 2009.  See www.elderhs.org for more details or contact Maureen Regan at Elder at 921-3744 ext. 3417.

FROM DEACON DAVID ENDRES

The Holy Father recently announced that the universal Church will celebrate the “year of the priest.”  The year will begin on June 19, 2009 and close on June 19, 2010 – the feast day of the Sacred Heart of Jesus.  This special year will coincide with the 150th anniversary of the death of St. John Vianney, the patron saint of parish priests.  Pope Benedict announced the special year of the priest to highlight the importance of the priesthood and to encourage spiritual growth among the clergy.

DEACON DAVID ENDRES ORDINATION

AND FIRST MASS

Deacon David Endres will be ordained to the priesthood on Saturday, May 23rd.  He will celebrate his first Mass here at St. Antoninus on Sunday, May 31st, at the 11:30AM Mass to which everyone from the parish is invited.

SAINT VINCENT DE PAUL SOCIETY

The Lenten Food Drive for the benefit of the Holy Family Pantry yielded 429 non-perishable food items and 202 household/personal items. Both totals exceeded those of last year.

Diana Penick, Holy Family Pantry administrator responds: “It is with a grateful heart that I say

‘Thank You’ to the parishioners of St. Antoninus

church who donated all the canned goods to the St. Vincent de Paul Pantry at Holy Family Church. As you may know, we serve the needy in the neighborhood of our church. We have seen a dramatic increase in those numbers over the last few months. During the month of February we served 1,803 individuals and I am quite sure that number will continue to grow. As you can imagine, our Church by itself could not care for the needs of so many. Only with donations could we begin to keep our doors open. And so, we say ‘Thank You’ so very much for your most generous donations. I promise good stewardship of your gift. Many Blessings!”

THE BOY SCOUTS wish to thank all parishioners, neighbors, friends and family who supported our Fish Fry this year.  We truly appreciate your patronage.  Thank you also to all the adults who donated their time and talent to help run our Fish Fry.  Finally, special thanks to Sam at Price Hill Chili who helped provide our food and supplies.  With our profits we will be able to fund activities for next year including camping, rank advancements and leadership training.  If your son would like to join our Troop, contact Mr. Jim Landers at 922-3174.

HOLY SPIRIT PRAYER GROUP

Since the conclusion of the Life in the Spirit Seminar in March, we are thrilled with the number of people seeking understanding of the many gifts of the Holy Spirit.  So far we have had in-depth teaching on how to discover and use them in our own lives; and on the gifts of exhortation, hospitality and tongues.  This week Deacon George Schmidl teaches on “The ABC’s of Prophecy.”  We have been told that “prophecy is the NOW word of God”.  We also know that St. Paul counsels to “seek first the gift of prophecy”.  Since George’s teachings are always thorough and complete, this promises to be a rewarding night.  In Chapel, Tuesday at 7:30PM
