FROM OUR PASTOR

My commentary on the second part of the Vision Statement continues.  "I see a day when every member of St. Antoninus engages in Faith Formation:...when every member is living his or her strengths."   As to living one’s strengths, “Discovering one’s God-given talents” and “Inspiring the community” are themes you will be hearing about in the coming months. In his forward, Fr. Bill Hanson writes: "Dr. Donald O. Clifton of The Gallup Organization began this work more than 40 years ago.  He recognized that there were patterns of talents God gave people from birth. He believed that he was called by God to use his talents to help others find theirs.  To accomplish this task, he researched the natural patterns of thought, feeling, and action of two million people in more than 25 countries.  The result is the Clifton StrengthsFinder, an online tool that reveals one’s top five themes of talent - called Signature Themes."  Father Bill continued: "Our parishioners have three reactions when they take the Clifton StrengthsFinder: amazement at its accuracy, genuine surprise, and gratitude."

Good stewards must not argue about who is the most important. Today’s Gospel says clearly that those who aspire to greatness must humbly serve the needs of all. Even Jesus came not to be served, but to serve.

Not only will our students write that day, they will listen and read different examples of writing. We will include your narratives for our students to read or for students to listen as they are read. After Tuesday, we would like to take these fond school memories and compile them in time for Catholic Schools Week. If you misplaced the goldenrod form, or you did not receive a bulletin last week, feel free to share your story on regular paper, or submit your story via e-mail. You may send it to me at corey@saintantoninus.org. Please type “School Memory” in the subject line of your e-mail. Thank you for your sharing your stories.

FROM OUR SEMINARIAN INTERN, MATTHEW J. ROBBEN

One of the popular misconceptions that I held when I entered the seminary was that I would study and pray all day, every day! While study and prayer does consume a good portion of the day, there is still time (albeit on a much more limited basis) to participate in the things that I enjoy like watching movies, golf, bowling, disc golf, tennis, and basketball. In fact, I never thought I would play college basketball in the seminary. The two basketball tournaments we play each year against other seminaries are extremely intense and competitive. I never expected this from future priests. The idealized portrait of priests and seminarians that I held when I entered the seminary is commonplace among both children and adults today.

There is a popular misconception that we (seminarians) are somehow “different” than they are and it is this perceived “difference” that hinders the ability to answer God’s call. The reality is that we are normal men who like to do normal things. In fact, I think it’s time to watch some football now! God bless you on your journey through the week!

HOLY SPIRIT PRAYER GROUP

Have you considered what gives you joyful hope in the future? Psalm 71:5 tells us, “For you are my hope, O Lord; my trust, O God, from my youth.” Our joy is not to be found in what the world offers but only in the surety of what Jesus Christ offers us. Governments change, fads change, goals change while only one thing is certain, our salvation, certain when we trust in the Lord. On Tuesday, Diane Autenrieb’s talk on “Living in Hope until our Last Breath” reaffirms the reality of this promise. We may be happy in our circumstances from time to time, but true joy comes only when we seek Jesus Christ and live according to His promises. Come and be encouraged, 7:30 PM in Chapel.

SALT AND LIGHT- A JOURNEY INTO CATHOLIC SOCIAL TEACHING is a five-session course on Tuesday evenings from 7:00 to 9:30pm at. St. Martin of Tours red school building. Sessions are on October 27, November 3, 10, 17, and 24. Registration is required. Call Marti Barnes at 661-2000.

LOST AND FOUND camera call for info 922-5400.

Emmett Bold Benefit on Friday, November 13, from 7PM until midnight in the St. Teresa of Avila undercroft. Cost is $15 per person and $25 per couple. Bid-n-buy, basket raffle and split the pot will be available. Call Jennifer (Metz) Rodenberg at 289-8550 for more details.

GALLUP’S ME 25 SURVEY

Dear Parishioners,

How can we best accomplish what God has in mind for us? How can we best use the gifts and talents of the people who are part of this parish? These are important questions, and we’ve been wrestling with them for quite some time at St. Antoninus Church.

To this end, we want to hear from each of you. In the coming weeks, we will conduct Gallup’s ME25 survey, a census of all adult members of our parish that will give you the opportunity to share your opinions about some of the key aspects of our parish life.

“Gallup’s ME25 Survey” means a survey of 25 questions which “measure engagement.  We will do the paper survey in church the week-end of October 24/25.  That same survey will be available on line from October 24 to November 6.

The survey will be administered by Gallup, an independent research company known for its understanding of people and their opinions. Although most of us know Gallup for its polling work, the organization has been listening to people’s opinions and studying successful organizations for more than 40 years. With this experience, Gallup brings a seasoned ability to help us gather and understand all of the opinions throughout our parish.

Your opinions will be completely confidential; Gallup will not reveal any individual responses to anyone. After we've received the results back from Gallup, we will use them to start a dialogue about our parish and how we can more effectively accomplish our mission. We all have a stake in the opportunities and challenges that lie ahead.

The success of this effort hinges on the completion of the survey by each one of us who is at least 18 years of age. We all share equally in our responsibility to reach the goal of 100% participation by our parish. Your opinions need to be heard.

This is an exciting time for our parish. We are taking important steps toward fulfilling God’s purpose for us both now and in the years to come. The process and subsequent dialogue will help us all in that effort.

Sincerely Yours in Christ,

Fr. Christopher R. Armstrong
