FROM OUR SEMINARIAN INTERN, MATTHEW J. ROBBEN This past weekend I participated in the seminary golf tournament hosted by our own Mt. St. Mary Seminary in Mt Washington. This annual event draws seminarians from around the Midwest for 18 holes of fun and camaraderie. Unfortunately, my team was unable to defend our title against the division one golfers of Mundelein Seminary. However, events like this tournament and the two upcoming basketball tournaments provide much more than friendly competition. They help instill a renewed respect for the Universal Church and the Priesthood of Jesus Christ.

Studying in a small seminary like Mt. St. Mary’s makes it easy to buy into the hype of the priest shortage; after all, there are only 30-40 men studying for the priesthood here. However, these events allow us to see the effect of the Universal Church’s work in action. Patience and perseverance in prayer wins the ultimate reward…an answer! The seminarians I met from across the United States all have the same drive and passion for Christ and His Holy Priesthood. This is a sign that our prayers are being heard and answered. Let’s not stop now! Let’s continue to persevere in patient prayer, for the Lord does hear and will answer our cry for an increase in vocations to the priesthood!

HOLY SPIRIT PRAYER GROUP

On Tuesday, Fay Brinck’s talk on, “The Spiritual Warfare and the Gift of Purgatory” will help us to see how Satan tricks us into sin in order to deprive us of the gift of Heaven. But, thanks to an all-merciful Father, the gift of purgatory is ours, a Purgatory which the Church describes as a “Final Purification of the Elect.” (Catholic Catechism, Articles 1030, 1031, 1032). Not until we are purified of all flaws, of all unexpiated sin, can we be given admittance to the Heavenly Kingdom.

And so Purgatory, an action of Final Purification, exists for our great benefit. Some time ago a visionary in Ireland wrote about a vision she was granted, a vision of “Purgatory”. If you would like to hear what she has to say, please come to the Holy Spirit Prayer Group Meeting for Fay Brink’s talk, and open your eyes to how Satan does his best to deceive us. At the same time, we will be reminded of how much the ever-merciful Heavenly Father wants us with Him, and of the mercy He holds out to us, through the gift of Purgatory! In Chapel, Tuesday, 7:30PM.

FROM OUR PRINCIPAL – JACK COREY

Dear Parishioners:

I have always felt our students become like the friends they hang out with. It is one of the reasons why my own children come here to St. Antoninus. Recently, I was sent an article that supports this thought. The author, Shelley Taylor-Smith, asserts that it is commonly believed that people are the combined average of the five persons with whom we spend most of our time. While I have never found any research to support this assertion, as a general guideline, it has some merit.

The author of the article continues to state that those with whom you associate don't influence you in a direct course, “They nudge you ever so slightly over time.” For example, if you associate primarily with those who are active volunteers, eventually you will find yourself volunteering.

The same goes for our students. At first, our children are a reflection of our families. But as they spend more time with their friends, they slowly begin to reflect the priorities of their closest friends, whether the priorities are sports, music, faith, video games, academics, etc.

It would be wise of us as parents first to make sure we reflect the attitudes and behaviors we want our children to have. Second, we need to make sure the friends our children associate with most closely reflect the same attitudes and behaviors we desire our children to have. Finally, we need to make sure our own associations also reflect the attitudes and behaviors we want to exhibit.

GALLUP’S ME 25 SURVEY

Dear Parishioners,

How can we best accomplish what God has in mind for us? How can we best use the gifts and talents of the people who are part of this parish? These are important questions, and we’ve been wrestling with them for quite some time at St. Antoninus Church.

To this end, we want to hear from each of you. In the coming weeks, we will conduct Gallup’s ME25 survey, a census of all adult members of our parish that will give you the opportunity to share your opinions about some of the key aspects of our parish life.

“Gallup’s ME25 Survey” means a survey of 25 questions which “measure engagement.  We will do the paper survey in church the week-end of October 24/25.  That same survey will be available on line from October 24 to November 6.

The survey will be administered by Gallup, an independent research company known for its understanding of people and their opinions. Although most of us know Gallup for its polling work, the organization has been listening to people’s opinions and studying successful organizations for more than 40 years. With this experience, Gallup brings a seasoned ability to help us gather and understand all of the opinions throughout our parish.

Your opinions will be completely confidential; Gallup will not reveal any individual responses to anyone. After we've received the results back from Gallup, we will use them to start a dialogue about our parish and how we can more effectively accomplish our mission. We all have a stake in the opportunities and challenges that lie ahead.

The success of this effort hinges on the completion of the survey by each one of us who is at least 18 years of age. We all share equally in our responsibility to reach the goal of 100% participation by our parish. Your opinions need to be heard.

This is an exciting time for our parish. We are taking important steps toward fulfilling God’s purpose for us both now and in the years to come. The process and subsequent dialogue will help us all in that effort.

Sincerely Yours in Christ,

Fr. Christopher R. Armstrong
