FROM OUR PASTOR

Dear Parishioners,

I continue here the commentary on the Vision Statement: "I see a day when every member of St. Antoninus engages in Stewardship: when every member puts his or her gifts at the service of the community in response to the call of the Holy Spirit." I read recently that God gives us our life; what we make of it is our gift to God. Every single baptized person is given gifts: some are natural, like memory, intellect and will; some are supernatural, like faith, hope and love; some are charismatic, like teaching, preaching and administration. The Holy Spirit calls us to cultivate our gifts for the good of the Church. To illustrate this, St. Paul uses the image of the human body in I Corinthians 12 to emphasize how each part is related to the whole and contributes to its function. It means, in a sense, doing what one does best, from offering hospitality to playing an instrument, from being present at a sickbed, to coming to a parishioner's funeral. "Called and Gifted" aren't just buzz words: The Holy Spirit has given His gifts on loan. To Him, what kind of return are we making for such gifts?

Today, Sunday, November 1, is All Saints Day. Underneath the altar are relics of the saints which were collected by our founding pastor, Fr. Goeckeler. Initially, altars were placed over the tombs of the martyrs as the church spread an altar-stone containing the relics of martyrs was inserted at the table level. Relics may still be placed under altars. Those relics collected by Fr Goeckeler will remain under the altar until Advent as a reminder that all of us are called to be saints.

Tomorrow, Monday, November 2nd, is the Commemoration of all the Faithful Departed, commonly called "All Souls' Day." As a reminder of "those who have gone before us marked with the sign of faith (EP I)," we have listed all those names that were registered in our parish's Death Register since our foundation in 1945 until October 31, 2009. It is meant to be a reminder that we all belong to the Communion of Saints here on earth, in Purgatory and in Heaven. The names of our deceased fellow-believers are meant to stimulate us to pray for them. St. Francis de Sales says that that is the highest form of fraternal charity, as the dead cannot help themselves and have only us, our prayers and sacrifices, to help them to be delivered from Purgatory. Pray for the souls in Purgatory and gain for yourselves friends in Heaven!

On Tuesday, November 3, our country will hold elections. The Catechism of the Catholic Church reminds us of the grave responsibility to vote. Our Holy Father, speaking to all Catholics around the world concerning elections, reminds us of three things that cannot be compromised: 1) the sanctity of life from conception to natural death; 2) the dignity of marriage between one man and one woman; 3) the stability of family life as the basic building block of society. Those pivotal issues are founded in Natural Law and yet more clearly seen in Divine Revelation as it is authentically interpreted by the Magisterium. Right thinking people will uphold them and give them primary consideration as they cast their ballots. God keep our country in His Peace.

FROM OUR PRINCIPAL – JACK COREY

Dear Parishioners,

In school we try to instruct our students on good citizenship. Part of being a good citizen is to educate oneself on the ballot issues and candidates before voting. If you have not already done so, you can go to the Catholic Conference of Ohio website at http://www.ohiocathconf.org/home_frameset.htm to research the state ballot issues.

Discussing the impact of the issues with older children and grandchildren is a way of modeling good citizenship and of imparting your values as you head to the voting booth this week. Eventually our children will become voters. Every election makes an impact on our society either positively or negatively. Our students should learn how to research issues instead of relying on thirty-second television ads.

FROM OUR SEMINARIAN INTERN, MATTHEW J. ROBBEN

The Feast of All Saints has always been one of my favorite. Each year we would study an obscure Saint who managed to attain a life of heroic virtue within the confines of his or her ordinary, everyday life. One Saint in particular who is near and dear to my heart became my confirmation saint, St. John Berchmans. St. John was born in 1599 and lived only 22 years. He was the son of a shoemaker and spent most of his life battling illness. He was always known for his gracious and kind demeanor, even amidst his illnesses. St. John was known for his piety as he always carried his rosary, Crucifix, and book of rules with him. He was noted for his “perfection in the little things” and reverence when serving at the altar. He was canonized in 1888 and is the patron saint of altar servers. We celebrate his feast day on November 26.

St. John Berchmans has played a key role in my life. I firmly believe that it has been through his intercessory prayer and the prayers of other saints that I have grown in faith and love. Shamefully over the years, my study of the Saints has not remained as faithful as those early years of my childhood, but there are thousands of saints waiting to teach and guide us through the example of their lives. Take some time today, study the life of a Saint, share it with your family and kids, and pray for their intercession. After all, they have accomplished what we hope to achieve; that personal face to face encounter with God; the Beatific Vision! Saint John Berchmans …pray for us!

HOLY SPIRIT PRAYER GROUP

In commemoration of the feast of All Souls Day, the prayer group will gather to pray for all the deceased in our families and among our acquaintances. We have gathered their names into a prayer basket for the last two weeks. Many deceased souls may still be in need of our prayers and sacrifices. The Church teaches us that those in purgatory cannot pray for themselves; therefore, they depend on the living and those in heaven – the Communion of Saints – who will offer prayers and sacrifices for them.

If you cannot gather with us on Tuesday to be in prayer, feel free to write the names of your loved ones and place the paper on the altar in the Chapel at any time. We will add these names to our basket and include them in our prayers, in particular spontaneous prayer, the rosary, and the Chaplet of Divine Mercy. In Chapel, 7:30 PM Tuesday.

Neighborhood Rosary Groups For Life

This is an urgent time for all Catholics to stand up for our Pro-Life/Pro-Family convictions, because the Obama administration is aggressively promoting: abortion, euthanasia, embryo stem cell research, and same sex marriage. We must "draw our strength from the Lord and from his mighty power". (Ephesians 6:10) St. Padre Pio said the rosary is a powerful weapon for conquering evil. We are inviting all to lead or join a Neighborhood Rosary Group for Life. These Rosary Prayer Groups would meet to pray the rosary together weekly in the home of the leader on the day and time convenient to the group. The suggested commitment is from 11/1/09 to 12/31/09. If you are able to lead, participate, or want further info on a Neighborhood Rosary Group For Life please call Dave Willig 451-6192, or Joanie Loebker 922-0348. St. Antoninus Pro-Life/Pro-Family Commission.

Dear Fellow Parishioners,

Bold efforts in 2009 to institutionalize the Culture of Death in America. Stirrings of deep civil unrest. With a sense of having been tragically betrayed, voters are rightfully alarmed by the direction of the Health bills as well as other ’09 proposals at the federal/ state levels and thankfully acting on their alarm. Congressman Steve Driehaus: voted in support of federal tax monies for Planned Parenthood, the largest abortion, child-killing chain in America. http://communitypress.Cincinnati.com/apps/pbcs.dll/article?AID=/C2/20090909/VAV02/909090302/ His letter to Pelosi is fine but it’s voting and leadership that matter. Let’s be clear: Planned Parenthood is not, nor has it ever been, some benign health clinic for poor women! Planned Parenthood also continues to target children and our minority community www.youtube.com/watch?v=zwifOVMW3c4&feature=related MAAFA21.com Reply from his constituent, Bob Meyers, VP of Cinti. Right to Life: http://communitypress.Cincinnati.com/article/20090904/V www.ProtectCincinnati.org

An easy analogy: if this were the evil of slavery (rather than the evil of abortion), would anyone expect today to be taken seriously in defending one's vote to fund the work of the largest slavery chain in the country because of the poor slaves?

Our opposition continues against any Health Care Bill in Congress unless it contains all of the essential “Life” elements explicitly stated within the bill. (www.HealthPostcards.com).

The treacherous "Prevention First Act" was reintroduced in Ohio House (as H.B. 293) by Rep. Tyrone Yates (D, Cincinnati) and in Ohio Senate (as S.B. 176) by Sen. Teresa Fedor (D, Toledo). Democratic sponsors (in keeping with their platform) plan on overturning Ohio’s current law which prohibits use of state "Women's Health Services" grants for abortion and abortion counseling/referral. Our good current law gives a preference for awarding grants to local health departments. Before this, about a million dollars/yr of OH tax money went to Planned Parenthood affiliates. Now none of it does. The bill also tramples on conscience rights of pro-life pharmacists, taxpayers and religious hospitals to promote use of the morning-after pill, which often acts as an abortifacient.

Both the federal Health Bill and this Ohio bill are geared to allow the abortion industry supporters to reach our children through our schools: I have been at meetings where Planned Parenthood has adamantly expressed their longing for school-based “clinics” saying they don’t care if it starts off as a dental site as long as they can gain a foothold to mainstream their efforts and by-pass “our number one stumbling block, parents”. Keep up those emails, letters and calls. Pray. God is good!

GALLUP’S ME 25 SURVEY

Dear Parishioners,

How can we best accomplish what God has in mind for us? How can we best use the gifts and talents of the people who are part of this parish? These are important questions, and we’ve been wrestling with them for quite some time at St. Antoninus Church.

To this end, we want to hear from each of you. In the coming weeks, we will conduct Gallup’s ME25 survey, a census of all adult members of our parish that will give you the opportunity to share your opinions about some of the key aspects of our parish life.

“Gallup’s ME25 Survey” means a survey of 25 questions which “measure engagement.  We will do the paper survey in church the week-end of October 24/25.  That same survey will be available on line from October 24 to November 6.

The survey will be administered by Gallup, an independent research company known for its understanding of people and their opinions. Although most of us know Gallup for its polling work, the organization has been listening to people’s opinions and studying successful organizations for more than 40 years. With this experience, Gallup brings a seasoned ability to help us gather and understand all of the opinions throughout our parish.

Your opinions will be completely confidential; Gallup will not reveal any individual responses to anyone. After we've received the results back from Gallup, we will use them to start a dialogue about our parish and how we can more effectively accomplish our mission. We all have a stake in the opportunities and challenges that lie ahead.

The success of this effort hinges on the completion of the survey by each one of us who is at least 18 years of age. We all share equally in our responsibility to reach the goal of 100% participation by our parish. Your opinions need to be heard.

This is an exciting time for our parish. We are taking important steps toward fulfilling God’s purpose for us both now and in the years to come. The process and subsequent dialogue will help us all in that effort.

Sincerely Yours in Christ,

Fr. Christopher R. Armstrong
