Dear Parishioners, Today’s Solemnity of the Epiphany has been called “little Christmas” but there is nothing little about it! It is, in fact, the Christ Child’s manifestation of Himself as Lord and Savior of all Nations, represented by the Magi. The Epiphany also gives us pause to think how each one of us manifests the Lord in our lives. For example, I have been reading Fr. Burger’s book Hear God’s Voice . He relates a story about President Jefferson who helped a man and his horse cross an icy stream. (To paraphrase,) “Why did you ask him to help? Didn’t you know he was the President?” The man replied, “No, I didn’t know. But when I was looking for help, all your faces said ‘no’, but his said ‘yes!’” As Fr. Burger stated: “Jesus is the One sent from the Father with ‘Yes’ on His Face.” And what about us? When people look at our faces what kind of Epiphany of Jesus will they have?
THANKS to all of parishioners on behalf of Fr. Armstrong, Fr. Mick, and Matt Robben, our seminarian intern, for your best wishes and gifts for Christmas and the New Year. During this “Year of Priests,” all of you have been most kind and generous in expressing your gratitude for the Priesthood of Jesus Christ to which the Lord has called us. In this New Year, may He find us worthy of serving you.
THANKS TO Tim Klapper’s family for putting up the outdoor Nativity scene this Christmas. Fr. Christopher R. Armstrong |
STOCK DONATIONS If you wish to contribute stock to Saint Antoninus Parish Church, please contact Mrs. Steffany Reid, our business manager, at 922-5400 for instructions.
Nativity Scenes: When we broke up our family home, I inherited the nativity scene. When my oldest brother was a child, each year he would purchase a figurine at Kresges’. The figurines are now chipped and a little faded but they remain a cherished memento. Thus, you can imagine my sadness when I discovered that so many of our parish school children did not display a Nativity Scene at home. It is my hope that this Christmas will be different. I urge parents to see to it that their children understand the true meaning of Christmas. One of our parishioners and a long time usher, Vince Walter, reminded me of the Nativity pageant at the Krohn Conservatory on JANUARY 3, 2010, the Solemnity of the Epiphany, at 2PM, sponsored by the Knights of Columbus. It would be a great family activity to take your children to see it and publicly witness to our faith: KEEP CHRIST IN CHRISTMAS!
CANDLELITE PRAYER VIGIL ON MONDAY, JANUARY 4TH, at 7PM in the greeting room to remember all babies, children and adults who have died due to Spinal Muscular Atrophy (SMA). All are invited to attend.
SAINT VINCENT DE PAUL SOCIETY Our Conference assists parents in providing the necessities for their families. Contributions toward payment for food, rent and utility bills are the major needs for many today. Your gratefully-received contributions placed in the poor boxes enable us to play a significant role in helping those in need.
For the new year 2010, please take the Traveling Chalice into your home for one week as a reminder to pray for vocations to the priesthood and to the religious life. If you would like the Traveling Chalice for one week, please call Debbie at 922-2414. Thank you to Earl and Dede Stalf who took the Traveling Chalice into their home for one week. |

Merry Christmas! On December 18, the 4th - 8th grade students were treated to a Vocation Challenge. The “Mt. St. Mary Seminary Minor Prophets” challenged the 8th grade men to a friendly game of basketball. The game was hard fought and everyone came out a winner. During halftime, a message challenging students to begin discerning their vocation in life was delivered. At the heart of this message was a statement given by our Most Holy Father, Pope Benedict XVI, which stated “Prayer itself is the first means by which we come to know the Lord’s will for our lives.” Drawing upon a song called “Dear World” in which we learn that true joy is self-giving, the students were then challenged to spiritual self-giving in personal prayer for the remainder of Advent and Christmas seasons. Overall, the game was a very humbling experience for both students and seminarians alike, the 8th grade humbled by their 2 point loss and the seminarians the next day when they realized “we’re not in 8th grade anymore!” May God bless you during this New Year and lead you to a new profound personal relationship with Christ!
HOLY SPIRIT PRAYER GROUP As we approach the New Year, we examine the past year to understand our failings and short comings, and resolve to improve. Father Al Lauer claimed that the reason for most sinfulness and bad relationships is unforgiveness. On Tuesday, we will consider the points he makes in his “unforgiveness” leaflet. It may help us to check out our behavior with an eye to correcting it in the future. Please join us. In Chapel, 7:30 PM.
MASS OF CHRISTIAN BURIAL has been offered for Helen Steimle and Doris Duba. Please remember also Jonathan Christopher Zanitsch. Please keep them and their families in your prayers.
ADULT SOCIAL GROUP Jan. 11th: Communion Service @ 12:30, followed by Luncheon in the Undercroft. And a presentation on German Beer Steins by Fred Kellerman. Cost: $9 pp for lunch. Please get your reservations in by Jan. 6th.
