In today’s second reading, St. Paul tells the Corinthians (and us) that all of our gifts are from God and that they are given, not for ourselves alone, but for the common good. But the generosity of God knows no limits — the miracle at Cana reminds us that whenever we faithfully do as God asks, He can change our gifts of water into wine!

FROM OUR PASTOR

Dear Parishioners,

By the time you read, this, I will have been in Rome for the North American College reunion.  The college was founded as a residence for American seminarians in Rome.  The catalyst for its foundation was a mid- 1850s riot here in Cincinnati between German and Irish Catholics upon the occasion of the visit of the Apostolic Delegate, Archbishop Bedini.  That prelate suggested to Bl. Pius IX that founding a college for Americans in Rome could help heal such divisions, restore ecclesial unity, and strengthen the bonds between the Supreme Pontiff and the faithful in the United States. The college opened its doors to its first seminarians in 1959, among whom was the grandson of St. Elizabeth Ann Seton. The college continues to serve the needs of the faithful to this day. Ad multos annos!

Fr. Christopher R. Armstrong

THE OBERAMMERGAU PASSION PLAY: As of the beginning of January, 63 pilgrims are going.  Pentecost Tours sent new brochures, which are in the greeting room.  The price goes up $100 after March 27, 2010.  Please mention Fr. Armstrong's name should you contact Pentecost Tours at (800)713-9800 or  travel@pentecosttours.com.

MEASURING ENGAGEMENT

ME 02: "I spend time in worship or prayer every day."  Of the 610/625 of our parishioners who responded to this question, 44% strongly agreed, 21% agreed, 19 % gave it a "soft" no, 12% disagreed and 4 % strongly disagreed. (Strongly agree=5; strongly disagree=1) Our average was 3.88/5 compared with 3.77/5 of all Catholics surveyed and 3.71/5 of all denominations surveyed.  According to Growing An Engaged Church, "every day" sets apart the spiritually committed from the rest of the pack. For the spiritually committed, prayer is just a part of their every day routine.  They feel incomplete without "their time with God."  The important thing is that they do it, not how they do it. Whatever form it takes, the daily ritual of prayer and worship is vital for their spiritual health and growth.

SAINT VINCENT DE PAUL SOCIETY

In the Gospel, John testifies that Jesus is the One who will baptize with the Holy Spirit. The revelation of Jesus' identity - how He is made known in the world - is mediated by the way we live our lives every day. As you place your gift in the SVdP Poor Box, know that you are a sign of God's love to those who are suffering and you give them reason to believe and to trust.

All are invited to the next meeting of the St. Antoninus Conference on this Tuesday, January 19, at 3PM in the Holy Family Room

HOLY SPIRIT PRAYER GROUP

Many of you have expressed an interest in the “How to Teach the Bible” program.  To further peak your interest and demonstrate the “how to”, Ben Klaene has selected a short quotation.  He will elaborate on its meaning by the use of other passages which confirm it.  All Scripture is as relevant for us today as it was 2000 years ago.  If we take time to read and understand its teachings we are graced with joy and wisdom for our everyday lives.  There will be another program here at St. A in the early fall. In the meantime, periodic teachings like Ben’s will help you to get started on your own.  Don’t YOU want to know more?  In chapel, on Tuesday, 7:30PM.

+

During this Year for Priests, our Holy Father has encouraged priests themselves to reflect on their own priestly vocations.  To that end, and in conjunction with the Holy Spirit Prayer Group, I will be leading a Bible Study "Sharing Christ's Priesthood" by Mike Aquilina on ten Tuesday evenings, beginning on Tuesday, January 26, at 7:30 pm in the Blessed Sacrament Chapel. The following are the dates for the rest of the series: Feb. 16; March 2, 9, 16, 23; April 6, 13, 20, 27.

+

THE PARISH PRO-LIFE COALITION will meet on January 27, in the church undercroft from 7-8:30PM.  All are welcome to attend.  For  info, call Joan Loebker at 922-0348.

FROM OUR PRINCIPAL –

JACK COREY

I want to congratulate the early recipients of scholarships offered by Catholic high schools.  As of press time, we know of over $135,000.00 in scholarships earned by our eighth grade students.  Congratulations to all of our students.  If you have not shared your child’s scholarship announcement with the school, please let us know.

Congratulations also go to 6th grader Josh A.  He won the school Geography Bee.  During the championship round Daniel F. and Josh went into single elimination overtime before Josh prevailed.  Congratulations to both Daniel F. and Josh A.

On Monday, the school and school office are closed for the observance of Martin Luther King Jr. Day.  When school resumes on Tuesday, we will continue with our Everybody Counts program.  This program culminates with our all school Mass on Friday, January 22nd.  This is also happens to be the anniversary of the Roe v. Wade decision.  It is very appropriate to remember this day with a Mass reinforcing that each person is a gift from God.

Catholic Schools Week starts on January 31st with the 11:30 Mass.  After the 11:30 Mass we are holding our Open House in the school.  All are welcome to visit.

Were you married outside the Church?   You can have your civil marriage celebrated (convalidated) in the Catholic Church.  We invite any parishioners who is affected by any issue to call Deacon Bob Schroeder at 922-4759 to set up a completely confidential appointment.

FROM OUR SEMINARIAN

Ordinary Time: Why does the Church call it Ordinary Time? I understand the reasoning behind counting the weeks between major Church seasons like Advent/Christmas and Lent/Easter. Ordinary to me means keeping the status quo, more of the same, nothing changes. What is to come is exactly what is expected, there will be no surprises…but what about the life and ministry of Jesus Christ can ever be called ordinary?  As I prepared a reflection based on the readings for the 1st Monday of Ordinary Time, I couldn’t help noticing the first words St. Mark has Jesus speak. “This is the time of fulfillment. The Kingdom of God is at hand. Repent, and believe in the Gospel…” (Mk 1:15) These are words of action that demand we never rest and continually seek conversion. Ordinary Time is not ordinary, but an extraordinary time…an extraordinary chance for us continually to draw closer to Christ and trust His guiding hand.

The 2010 Main-A-Vent Gifting Tree

Over the next three (3) weeks, the Main-A-Vent Gift Gathering Team NEEDS your help…

The live and silent auctions are an important part of the event.  In helping us reach our stewardship goals, we are seeking products and/or service donations to be used for these purposes during the evening proceedings.

It is crucial that we secure a significant number of gifts, products and service items. No item is too big or small, but greatly appreciated!

You may like to donate: Fine wines, weekend accommodations, flights, electrical/technical goods and/or event/concert tickets.

Time & Talent to donate: If you prefer to offer your trade as an auction item, such as, landscaping, yard work, painting, salon/spa services, catering, photo session, tutoring or music lessons…it would be greatly appreciated.

Please find the GIFTING TREE in the Greeting Room for IDEAs that will help us meet our goal!

Please drop-off items at the Church Rectory or to arrange for pick-up of items or discuss your donation item contact: Sue Ulmer 922-2159    sulmer@fuse.net or Beth Perrmann 451-0598  bperrmann@curren.net
