Remember St. Antoninus in your will. + In today’s readings, both Isaiah and Peter hear the call of God and feel themselves unworthy. But, reassured by the Lord, both answer and follow. Do I hear the Lord asking, “Whom shall I send?” Am I prepared to answer, “Here I am. Send me!”? +

FROM OUR PASTOR Dear Parishioners, Today we conclude our Forty Hours of continuous Adoration of the Blessed Sacrament. I am grateful to all who volunteered their time to worship the Lord and to all who had wished to come but could not because duty or charity called them elsewhere. In the undercroft we also conclude the Exhibition of Eucharistic Miracles. I suppose my favorite is the Eucharistic Miracle of Lanciano, because when the Eucharistic elements of bread and wine became living human flesh and blood, the flesh was of the myocardium, the very Heart of Jesus. Moreover, since the Eucharist is the source and summit of our lives, I want to share with you two prayers a friend shared with me, one concerning our First Holy Communion and one concerning our last Communion. My friend memorized the following prayer in the second grade and has said it for the last 66 years: “Jesus Thou art coming/ Holy as Thou art/ Thou the God who made me/ To my sinful heart./ Jesus I believe it/ On Thy only word/ Kneeling I adore Thee/As my King and Lord.// Who am I my Jesus/ That Thou shouldest come to me?/ I have sinned against Thee/ Often grievously./ I am very sorry/ I have caused Thee pain/ I will never, never/ Wound Thy Heart again./ Put Thy kind arms round me/ Feeble as I am/ Thou art my Good Shepherd/ I thy little lamb./ Since Thou comest Jesus/ now to be my guest/ I can trust Thee always/ Lord for all the rest.” The other is the offering of Holy Communion as Viaticum: "O my God, if I am to die today or suddenly at any time, I wish to receive this Communion as my Viaticum. I desire that my last food may be the Body and Blood of my Savior and Redeemer, my last words: Jesus, Mary and Joseph: My last affection an act of pure love of God and of perfect contrition for my sins: My last consolation, to die in Your holy grace and in Your holy love. Amen.” Fr. Christopher R. Armstrong |
THE OBERAMMERGAU PASSION PLAY: See the Pentecost Tours brochures in the greeting room. The price goes up $100 after March 27, 2010. Please mention Fr. Armstrong's name should you contact Pentecost Tours at (800)713-9800 or at travel@pentecosttours.com.
MEASURING ENGAGEMENT "Because of my faith, I have meaning and purpose in my life." Of the 610 out of 626 parishioners who responded to that question, 57% strongly agreed, 29 % agreed, 10 % neither agreed nor disagreed, 2% disagreed and 2 % strongly disagreed. Of the 15, 006 Catholics who responded the average was 4.31/5 (5= strongly agreed); of all respondents, the average was 4.36/5. According to Growing An Engaged Church, many people would agree that their faith gives their lives meaning and purpose, without it necessarily touching "every aspect of their lives" (such wording was used in another question). For the spiritually committed, it is not wealth, position, power or even the pursuit of the American Dream that gives their lives meaning; that meaning is derived from their faith.

Over the past couple of weeks, I have had the opportunity to travel to Washington D.C. for the March for Life and to Mundelein Seminary in Chicago for the annual Seminarian basketball tournament. Both occasions have provided me with an increased sense of optimism for the future of the Catholic Church. In Washington D.C., I attended the youth rally and Mass at the Verizon Center. The rally opened with several contemporary music groups playing Christian rock and pop music. The youths were singing and dancing in the aisles! The most powerful moment however, occurred when preparations for Mass began. Everyone quieted down. All took their seats, pulled Rosaries from their pockets, and began to pray. More than 20,000 young adults, seminarians, priests, and deacons witnessed together to the joy and spirit of life. This same prayerful and optimistic spirit was found in Chicago as well. Nine different seminaries were represented for the basketball tournament along with numerous fans to cheer them. The games were very competitive and we had a lot of fun meeting brother seminarians from around the world. There was a sense of hope and purpose that we all seemed to share. Part of this, I believe, is from Pope Benedict XVI’s decision to celebrate the priesthood. There is an increasing sense of purpose brewing in the Catholic Church. Whether this is owing to seminarians, or young adults, or both, there is a sense that the status-quo is not good enough. Our culture is not “OK” and it is time that we learn this and unite in faith.
BE A SPIRITUAL SPONSOR FOR A CONFIRMATION CANDIDATE. The names, addresses and photos of our candidates for Confirmation will be on a board in the greeting room. PARISH DIRECTORIES, are available at the rectory during office hours for $5.00 each. |

HOLY SPIRIT PRAYER GROUP How quickly we’ve gone from Christmas to expecting Lent next week! Have we really taken time to consider how important this season is to our spiritual lives? Are we ready to hunker down to prayer and sacrifice? If not, it is time to recognize the great sacrifice made for us on that cross and get serious. To that end, on Tuesday, four of our members will share their Lenten plans with us. It will give us all an opportunity to reflect and possibly contribute our own intentions. Our Lent will only be as positive and good and effective as we make it. Let’s prepare. In Chapel, Tuesday 7:30PM.
