Remember St. Antoninus in your will.

+

Peter, James, and John wanted to build a “booth” for Jesus and just stay on the mountain where His transfiguration took place. But the Son of God, the Chosen One, knew that He must keep moving toward His crucifixion. We, too, must rise from worship and do what we can to hasten the coming of the kingdom.

FROM OUR PASTOR

Dear Parishioners,

Today is the kick-off for the annual Catholic Ministries Appeal [CMA]. Archbishop Schnurr explains its necessity.  Among the ministries, are our seminary and the priests' retirement fund. And, if I were to give a face to the CMA, I would give two faces:  that of Matt Robben, our seminarian intern who is about to begin a life of service to the church as a priest; and that of Fr. Mick, who has served the church so faithfully for so many years, even in his retirement.  Therefore, the cause is just; the need is great.  Please be as generous to the CMA as your means allow.

Fr. Christopher R. Armstrong

MEASURING ENGAGEMENT ME 08: "My faith gives me inner peace."   Of the 611/625 parish respondents who answered that question, 58 % strongly agreed, 29 % agreed, 10 % neither agreed nor disagreed, 2% disagreed, and 1% strongly disagreed.  The mean was 4.40/5; among all Catholic respondents, the average was 4.33/5; among respondents of all denominations, the average was 4.37/5.  According to Growing An Engaged Church the lives of the spiritually committed are not necessarily easier nor do they go more smoothly than the lives of others; in fact, many of the spiritually committed have faced extraordinary hardships in their lives. For some, their spirituality seems to have been forged in the midst of adversity.  But through it all, no matter what storms they may have weathered in their lives, the spiritually committed find a calm and steady courage.  They can face the worst that life dishes out and still remain standing, firm in the knowledge that God will see them through.

THE OBERAMMERGAU PASSION PLAY: See the Pentecost Tours brochures in the greeting room.  The price goes up $100 after March 27, 2010.  Please mention Fr. Armstrong's name, should you call Pentecost Tours at (800)713-9800.

Were you married outside the Church? You can have your civil marriage celebrated (convalidated) in the Catholic Church. Call Deacon Bob Schroeder at 922-4759 to set up a confidential appointment.

FROM OUR PRINCIPAL – JACK COREY

As the second full week of Lent starts, it is a good time for parents to ask their children to reflect on how their Lenten promises bring them closer to God.  Many students give up something, or do something extra because they are told they should.  But if our efforts in Lent do nothing to bring us closer to God, these endeavors become meaningless activities.  Our job as parents and educators is to make sure our children understand that properly observing Lent requires more than our just giving up something.  The good we do during Lent should help us move closer to God.

This week our students in grades 2-8 are receiving the Sacrament of Reconciliation.  Not only does this sacrament repair and strengthen our relationship with God, it also gives us special graces.  It helps us in our efforts to become more Christ-like.  One would be hard pressed to find a better way to prepare for Easter.  In your conversations about Lent with your child, please make sure they understand the importance of this sacrament.

FROM OUR SEMINARIAN

MATTHEW ROBBEN

Matt was away on retreat at deadline time.  Please pray for him and all the seminarians.

SAINT VINCENT DE PAUL SOCIETY

Lent is a call not just to "give up something" but, more important, to "give something for the poor." Our six Poor Boxes are ready and waiting to receive your Lenten contributions.

HOLY SPIRIT PRAYER GROUP

It was a gratifying turnout for Father Armstrong’s series, “Sharing Christ’s Priesthood – A Bible Study for Catholics.” Many were expecting this to be a lecture and note-taking session, which it was not. On the contrary, it was interactive participation with a large group of attendees. Many of us were surprised at how much we did not know. It was interesting and fascinating. Father kept it moving forward and we finished at 9PM, as promised.

On Tuesday, he will conduct the second in the series. If you didn’t make the first, consider coming now. You won’t regret it and you’re bound to learn much. Call Mary Handermann to register 922-4738. This series will run through Lent on Tuesdays. In Chapel, 7:30 PM. Remember to bring your Bible.

U.S. CATHOLIC BISHOPS’ CONFERENCE AGAIN URGES CATHOLIC PARISHIONERS: “STOP ABORTION FUNDING IN HEALTH CARE REFORM!”    The January 7th, letter sent by the U.S. Conference of Catholic Bishops to all 19,000 Catholic parishes reiterates and updates its earlier alerts, with an unprecedented urgency and deep concern about the pro-abortion and anti-conscience dangers in health care reform.  “As long-time advocates of health care reform, the U.S. Catholic bishops continue to make the moral case that genuine health care reform must protect the life, dignity, consciences and health of all, especially of the poor and vulnerable.  Health care reform should not advance a pro-abortion agenda in our country.

On November 7, the U.S. House of Representatives passed major health care reform that affirms the essential, longstanding and widely supported policy against using federal funds for elective abortions and includes positive measures on affordability and immigrants.

On December 24, the U.S. Senate rejected this policy and passed health care reform that requires federal funds to help subsidize and promote health plans that cover elective abortions.  All purchasers of such plans will be required to pay for other people’s abortions through a separate payment solely to pay for abortion.

Outside the abortion context, neither bill has adequate conscience protection for health care providers, plans or employers.

These two bills must now be combined into one bill that both the House and Senate will vote on in final form.  Provisions against abortion funding and in favor of conscience protection, affordability, and immigrants’ access to health care must be part of a fair and just health care reform bill, or the final bill must be opposed.”

U.S. CATHOLIC BISHOPS’ CONFERENCE Con’t

The bishops’ alert (www.usccb.org/action) asked parishioners to contact their Senators and Representatives with these messages:

HOUSE: “I am please that the House health care bill maintains the long-standing policy against feceral funding of abortion.  I urge you to work to uphold essential provisions against abortion funding, to include full conscience protection and to assure that health care is accessible and affordable for all.  Until and unless these criteria are met, I urge you to oppose the final bill.”

SENATE: “I am deeply disappointed that the Senate health care bill fails to maintain the long-standing policy against federal funding of abortion and does not include adequate protection for conscience.  I urge you to support essential provisions against abortion funding, similar to those in the House bill.  Include full conscience protection and assure that health care is accessible and affordable for all.  Until and unless these criteria are met, I urge you to oppose the final bill.”
