In the Gospel story of the first Palm Sunday, we hear that the owners of the ass had only to be told, “The Master has need of it,” to give the animal gladly. Do I give as readily to the Lord’s work?

FROM OUR PASTOR

Dear Parishioners,

One of my Lenten practices was to go to the Cathedral for "Lunch with the Lord" presented by Fr. Burger. I always found his graced insights whether in private conversation or in public preaching to be just what the doctor, Jesus, ordered.  Today was no exception when he was preaching on the Passion of Our Lord according to St. Luke.  Fr. Burger was speaking about Lord's humility and ours.   Among other things he said, "Thinking that life should not cheat me because I am an honest person is like saying a bull in the field should not charge me because I am a vegetarian."  Who was more innocent than Jesus in his suffering and death?  And yet, "He gave Himself into our hands and was nailed to a cross."  As I heard another priest say many years ago, "Any one born of the Virgin Mary is going to suffer Pontius Pilate."   As St. Teresa of Avila reminds us, every age is the worst age to live in.  Thus, believers in every age have been caught up in the political, social and economic turmoil of their times and have suffered the contradiction of the Cross.  Our own times are not any different nor its remedy, the Cross of Christ!  Ave Crux, Spes Unica!   Hail Cross,  our only hope!

TRIDUUM:  The most important liturgical days of our Church are The Mass of the Lord's Supper, the Liturgy of the Lord's Passion and The Great Vigil of Easter.  There may be many reasons why one cannot attend one or all of those liturgies, but ought "I am too busy" be one of them?  On Ash Wednesday, I preached on the four-letter words of Lent: Pray, Fast, Alms.  I also mentioned "busy" as a four-letter word that undermines the four-letter word "Lent."  These liturgies form the capstone of our worship.  In them we experience who we are as Catholics and what the Lord has done for us.  Why miss out?!

Fr. Christopher R. Armstrong

THE OBERAMMERGAU PASSION PLAY: See the Pentecost Tours brochures in the greeting room.  Please mention Fr. Armstrong's name, should you call Pentecost Tours at (800)713-9800.

Were you married outside the Church?   Those seeking a convalidation of the marriage or an annulment of their marriage should call Deacon Bob Schroeder at 922-4759 to set up a confidential appointment.

MEASURING ENGAGEMENT 25:

As I noted last week, the coming weeks highlight parish engagement.  ME 11: "As a member of my parish, I know what's expected of me."  Of the 600/625 parish respondents, 34% strongly agreed, 37% agreed, 21% neither agreed nor disagreed, 6% disagreed and 2% strongly disagreed.  The mean parish average was 3.97/5; among Catholic respondents the mean was 3.90/5 and among all denominations it was 3.94/5.  According to Growing An Engaged Church, asking about expectations taps into the question "what do I get?"  "Members need to know what is expected of them if they are to develop a strong sense of belonging within their congregation. Clarifying expectations creates a sense of stability, assuring members that they are valued."    If there is little follow up, expectations could be assumed rather than clarified.  The author goes on to ask the congregational leader a set of questions: what should your members' lives look like? Behaviors? Community service? Study, growth or support groups? Financial support?  "Clear expectations lay the foundation for everything else your congregation is called to do and be. Without them, members will drift - eventually right out the door."

FROM OUR PRINCIPAL –    JACK COREY

Dear Parishioners,

This week is Holy Week as we reflect on Christ’s journey to the Cross and ultimately His Resurrection.  We encourage all families to participate as much as possible during the Easter Triduum.  Since there are no classes on Good Friday, families are encouraged to use this day to reflect on the death of our Lord.

Tomorrow we begin the final quarter of the school year.  Second graders are finishing their First Communion preparation, while the eighth graders are preparing to go on to high school.  Please keep our parish school in your prayers as we gear up for the final quarter of school.

FROM OUR SEMINARIAN

MATTHEW ROBBEN

Blessed are you that hunger now, for you shall be satisfied.” (Luke 6:21)

Blessed are those who hunger and thirst for Righteousness.” (Matthew 5:6)

The following is based upon Beatitudes Eight Steps to Happiness by Raniero Cantalamessa, O.F.M. Cap. Once again, we see a difference in the way Matthew and Luke write this beatitude. Luke turned his attention to the physical aspect of hunger and works of mercy while Matthew focuses on the spiritual component and what we must do to become righteous. How do we become righteous? We perform righteous acts like championing the rights of the poor and hungry. It is through these righteous acts that God will separate the sheep from the goats, the righteous from the unrighteous. (Matthew 25:31-46) Are you a sheep or a goat? Here are a few questions to ponder. Do I strive for holiness or settle for mediocrity and lukewarm-ness in my spiritual life? While millions of people starve each day, do I continue to seek comforts outside my means or physical necessity? Am I any better than the rich man who refused scraps of food to Lazarus? (Luke 16:19-31)

Please take the Traveling Chalice into your home for one week as a reminder to pray for vocations to the priesthood and to the religious life by calling Debbie at 922-2414. Thank you to Dave and Kate Hein who took the Traveling Chalice into their home for one week.

NOMINATIONS are requested for the elections to Parish Council, Education Commission and Worship Commission for 3 year terms to replace the members whose terms expire this summer. Nomination forms can be turned in via the collection basket or dropped off at the rectory.  Deadline for nominations is Monday morning March 29th.  If you would like to serve or know someone whom you think would be good in these roles, please submit a form.  For questions, please contact the appropriate Chairperson noted on the front of the bulletin.
