In today’s Gospel, Jesus gives His disciples — and us — a new commandment: “Love one another.” Good stewards who spend their time and talents in service to others are well on their way to fulfilling this commandment.   See John 13:34

FROM OUR PASTOR

Typically on Fridays after the parish school Mass, followed by Exposition of the Blessed Sacrament and the recitation of the Rosary, I take Holy Communion to our homebound parishioners, as do several of our Eucharistic Ministers, for which I am indeed grateful.  To the people I visited I spoke about our candidates for First Communion, and their particular “Emmaus Day”, which, for them, was a kind of “Retreat” in their preparation for their reception of the Most Holy Sacraments of the Altar.  In turn they told me stories about their own First Holy Communions.  I was delighted by those stories but even more edified by their faith in the Blessed Sacrament and their devotion in receiving our Eucharistic Lord.  I started to reflect on my own First Communion and my own faith and devotion to Our Lord, really present Body and Blood, Soul and Divinity under the appearance of bread and wine.  On this Sunday our parish's First Communion, I would invite you to do the same.  "O Sacrament most holy, O Sacrament divine! All praise and all thanksgiving be every moment Thine!"

THANKS to all who volunteered for the the Spring Clean Up in preparation for First Holy Communion.  We had wonderful leadership from the Building and Grounds Committee and lots of help from our parishioners.  Thanks to you, our little corner of the world appears to be almost paradise on earth!

-- Fr. Christopher R. Armstrong

MEASURING ENGAGEMENT 25: ME 16: “There is someone in my parish who encourages my spiritual development."  Of the 551/625 parish respondents 22% strongly agreed, 23% agreed, 25% neither agreed nor disagreed, 18% disagreed and 12% strongly disagreed.  The mean average for the parish was 3.25/5; for all Catholics, it was 3.36/5; for all denominations, it was 3.52/5.  According to Growing an Engaged Church, "this item speaks to the need of parishioners to feel they make a meaningful contribution." The author suggests that parishioners be challenged to deepen their relationship with God and to make belonging to a small group an expectation of membership.  "Spiritual development means helping people discover and obtain what is right for them.  Ask parishioners three questions when supporting their spiritual development: 1) what are your talents and strengths; 2) what do you love to do? 3) if time and money were no object, what would you do for God?"

HOLY SPIRIT PRAYER GROUP Since the month of May is dedicated to our Blessed Virgin Mary, the prayer group will spend Tuesday evening in honoring her. In addition, May 4th, is Election Day and so it seems appropriate to pray the rosary devotion called the “Patriotic Rosary.” This special prayer is offered for the consecration of our nation to Jesus through Mary and consists of praying for conversion of the people in every state and in every part of our governmental structure. Please join us in this moving prayer of petition to our Holy Mother, Mary. In Chapel, 7:30 PM.

FROM OUR PRINCIPAL –    JACK COREY

Dear Parishioners,

Congratulations to our second graders who receive Holy Eucharist for the first time this Sunday!  Our second grade teachers do a phenomenal job getting our second graders ready for this.

For the last couple of months, I could see how the excitement and anticipation grew as this day drew closer.  Our students not only know what Holy Eucharist is, they believe.  Now the day is here.  Our second graders are receiving Jesus: Body, Blood, Soul, and Divinity.

Please pray for our second graders as they receive Holy Eucharist for the first time.

FROM OUR SEMINARIAN

MATTHEW ROBBEN

Blessed are they who are persecuted for the sake of righteousness, for theirs is the Kingdom of Heaven.” Mt 5:10

The following is based upon Beatitudes Eight Steps to Happiness by Raniero Cantalamessa, O.F.M. Cap. There are two reasons for persecution, “for the sake of righteousness” (Mt.) and “on account of the Son of Man.” (Lk 6:22) Luke’s persecution for the sake of Christ is easy to see in the deaths of the many martyrs in history and today. The persecuted for the sake of righteousness is a little harder to recognize in our secularized culture. Persecution doesn’t come by sword, but opinion. Media is used to broadcast and persecute, not just those of faith, but any whose belief differs. Faith is pushed aside and seen as something foreign and unnecessary. As exegete Heinrich Schlier commented, this speaks to “the prince of the power of the airs” in Ephesians 2:2. Were it not for our faith, how easy it would be for us to fall into this trap and become cynical. Here are a few points to ponder this week. Am I ready to suffer in silence for the gospel? How do I react when I feel like I have been wronged? Do I participate in the suffering of those who are truly persecuted for their faith?

St. Rita School for the Deaf

EVERYDAY MIRACLES: Katie’s Story

(from an essay by Katie, a St. Rita senior)

My first day at St. Rita School for the Deaf, I walked onto the campus and was greeted by a myriad of friendly faces. A priest led us to a chapel up on the second floor of the school. Doors were opened wide and long rows of wooden benches beckoned us to enter. The chapel was radiant by the sun reflecting through the stained glass windows surrounding the room.

An angelic figure was kneeling in front of the benches holding up her hands into two I love you signs. The priest walked to the altar and kissed it. I noticed that there too was an I love you hand sign engraved on it. The priest signed the entire Mass. From that day, I felt I actually belonged here, unlike at  the other public schools I had gone to in the past.

Many people aspire to witness miracles, and claim that it is extremely rare to see one in their lifetime. I believe I am extremely lucky because I witness miracles nearly every day. They take place within the aged walls of St. Rita School for the Deaf. Students who don’t have English as their first language, and even students with very little language at all, transfer to St. Rita School and emerge as high school graduates with dazzling futures. I will feel so honored to stride onto the stage in my cap and gown to receive my diploma as a St. Rita graduate. I’ll always remember the miracles that occurred here every day, and the symbols that remind us of God’s unconditional love.

Please take the Traveling Chalice into your home for one week as a reminder to pray for vocations to the priesthood and religious life. Call Debbie at 922-2414.

Thank you to Jeff and Judith Briggs Family who took the Traveling Chalice into their home for one week.
