Today’s reading from Revelation offers a vision of the City of God, the new Jerusalem. “But,” the bishops’ pastoral on stewardship reminds us, “that ‘life to come’ is in continuity with this present life through the human goods, the worthy human purposes, which people foster now.”

FROM OUR PASTOR

Dear Parishioners,

First, I want to wish all of our Mothers a happy Mother's Day.  It seems ever truer that "the hand that rocks the cradle, rules the world."   Only in heaven will mothers know the true “affect” and effect they have had in their children lives.  I remember at the funeral of one of our Eucharistic Ministers, a mother of a large family who died as the result of injuries sustained in a car crash, the preacher recalled a previous conversation with her: "My job is to see to it that my children get to heaven."  Mothers do have that tremendous task but they are also given all the corresponding graces for their lofty vocation.  I also want to acknowledge all those who may have had a maternal role in our lives like adopting mothers, grandmothers, godmothers, teachers, coaches and scout leaders.  My prayers are also with those who have no mother this year to whom they could wish a Happy Mother's Day.  Finally, we rejoice that all of us have the Blessed Virgin Mary, the Mother of God, to be our mother as well, whose job it is to see to that we all get to heaven!

-- Fr. Christopher R. Armstrong

THE OBERAMMERGAU PASSION PLAY: See the Pentecost Tours brochures in the greeting room.  Should you call Pentecost Tours at (800)713-9800, please mention Fr. Armstrong's name.

Please pray for Joan Bolger and her family.

MEASURING ENGAGEMENT 25: ME17: “As a member of my parish, my opinions seem to count."  Of the 533/625 parish respondents, 13% strongly agreed, 25% agreed, 35% neither agreed nor disagreed, 18% disagreed and 9% strongly disagreed.  The parish's mean average was 3.14/5; among all Catholics, it was 3.27/5; among all denominations, it was 3.38/5.  According to Growing An Engaged Church, just about half the respondents strongly agree with the ME 17 statement.  The author analyzed the data and made three observations: 1) Memebers' opinions are not being recognized by the right person; 2) members think the leadership has already made the decision; 3) there is a history of shutting members out.  Accordingly, the author recommends: "Healthy performance on ME 17 boils down to communication, which is vital to any organization; and the larger the congregation is, the more effort it takes to maintain clear lines of communication within it.  Finding out what members think - even if there be no agreement with their opinions or they not be acted upon -is critical for the parish's effectiveness.

FROM OUR PRINCIPAL –    JACK COREY

Dear Parishioners,

Below is an excerpt of an email sent to Miss Tenoever after our fourth graders returned from a recent field trip.

We enjoyed having your kids, too.  The educators mentioned how impressed they were that compared to some of the older groups we have, these 4th graders knew more and were very engaged and attentive throughout the trip!

This email reflects the many comments I receive when our students go on field trips.  We know our students have high expectations placed on them by our families, our teachers and our parish community.  It is always nice to hear how our students rise to meet and exceed our expectations.  This past week I had two non-parishioners email me about how well our students perform and how well-behaved they are.

My deepest thanks to parishioners for providing for our school, parents for entrusting us with your children, and to the faculty and staff for all they do educating our children and forming them in the faith.

FROM OUR SEMINARIAN

MATTHEW ROBBEN

Mother’s Day isn’t just a day to show mom how much we love her (which for me usually starts with a flowering hanging basket and card) but a day to celebrate what she gave to us, life and family. Flowers bring life to the yard and cards line the door, but it is sitting around the table eating mom’s amazing BBQ and playing Pinochle that brings mom (and me) the most joy. It is so like my mother to take so much joy in the ordinary things in life. Then again, that is why we have Mother’s Day! It is our chance to reward her, say thanks, and show how much we care. God bless all our mothers! Happy Mother’s Day!

HOLY SPIRIT PRAYER GROUP

Perhaps you have heard that the Gospels of Matthew, Mark, and Luke are known as the Synoptic Gospels. What does that term mean? What are the similarities and the differences between these three gospels? Mary Handermann will give some of the background of the authors and the books in order to help us understand the author’s intent in the writing of these great books of Scripture. The “good news” proclaimed by these evangelists is a unique type of writing and each author brought his own experiences and purposes to the table which was then used by the Holy Spirit in a powerful way. Come and join us. Tuesday evening, 7:30 PM in Chapel.

Thank you to Joe and Carol Jacob Family who took the Traveling Chalice into their home for one week.

Dear Fellow Parishioners,

Parenthood.  Each May and June, Americans pay special tribute to our beloved mothers and our loving fathers.  We honor our parents, our gift of family.  The blessing of our faith reminds us that God created us in His image and likeness…precious in His sight from our conception to our natural death.  We prayerfully thank Him for our gift of LIFE through our parents both birth and also for some,  the special gift through adoption. We also pray for parents who have suffered the heart breaking loss of their child through miscarriage, still birth, illness or injury.

A largely silent group is also in need of prayer and care…those fathers and mothers whose child died in abortion.  Hidden wounds. (see pro life at  SaintAntoninus.org).  The entire extended family is touched and suffers from abortion.  Remorse and repentance give way to hope and healing with the grace of the sacraments and help through the Church . (see PriestsforLife.org;  your pastor; your local pro life pregnancy center).

All of this brings us to current times in our nation.  The flagrant, bold efforts to institutionalize the culture of death in America, tearing at this very vital fabric of our families , will have stunning consequences.  Ohio’s treacherous “Prevention First Act” (HB293 and SB 176) has been reintroduced by two Democrats (in keeping with the Democratic platform). Also, tragically, the federal “Health” Care Law (Senate Bill H.R. 3590) provides direct funding for abortions at Community Health Centers (H.R. 3590, Sect. 10503, p. 2355).  This new law uses federal funds to subsidize abortions in insurance plans by providing subsidies to pay premiums for insurance plans that cover abortion. (H.R. 3590, Sect. 1303, p. 2069).  It doesn’t protect our health care workers who refuse to participate in abortion (H.R. 3590, p 2076)!

Largely unnoticed, the coverage of euthanasia/assisted suicide has not been explicitly prohibited in this law. Currently legal in two states, these evils had two of its authors who wrote sections of the House Bill (FRC.com). Just like abortion was ‘regulated in’ to federal law, these evils may loom even larger than all the abortion deaths.    .

The ploy of an executive order to prohibit abortion changes nothing: no president can amend a law by executive order.  Shame on our President and the Congressmen who voted for this bill (locally Cong. Steve Driehaus)…who are trying to hoodwink American voters!  Pray.  Get even more active! God is good!
