Remember St. Antoninus in your will.

+

The second reading today contains the somber warning that Jesus is coming soon and will bring to each person the reward that his or her conduct deserves. Has my stewardship of the blessings entrusted to me been such that I could joyfully respond, “Amen! Come, Lord Jesus!”?

FROM OUR PASTOR

As I write this column, the date is May 10, the Solemnity of St. Antoninus, 1389-1459. Someone suggested some time ago that I put his biography on our website. I hope to do so soon but in the meantime it is worthwhile, I think, to call to mind some facts about our parish patron and our imitation of him. He was a Dominican friar, whose order is devoted to preaching of the gospel and the promotion of the Rosary. Do I take the time to pray the Rosary daily, which Paul VI called the compendium of the gospel? He was a very learned man and was called "the Counselor" by Pope Eugenius VI who said that there could be no appeal against the decisions made by St. Antoninus because no one was more learned than he. Do I take the time to grow in my faith by study, prayers and action? St. Antoninus initially refused to become the Archbishop of Florence (1446-1459) but later bowed to the Pope's command. He spent his episcopacy preaching, visiting his archdiocese, rooting out vices and planting virtues. Am I obedient to laws of Christ and His Church, even when they may prove difficult? St. Antoninus's body is incorrupt. Do I have a firm conviction in the resurrection of the body and life everlasting? As the Preface of Pastors states, does not St. Antoninus "inspire us by his holy life, instruct us by his preaching and give us his protection in answer to his prayers?"

THE OBERAMMERGAU PASSION PLAY: See the Pentecost Tours brochures in the greeting room.  Should you call Pentecost Tours at (800)713-9800, please mention Fr. Armstrong's name.

MEASURING ENGAGEMENT 25:  ME 18: “The mission or the purpose of my parish makes me feel that my participation is important."  Of the 558/625 parish respondents, 21% strongly agreed, 33% agreed, 29% neither agreed nor disagreed,

12 % disagreed, and 5% strongly disagreed.  The parish mean average was 3.52/5; among all Catholics it was 3.63/5 and among all denominations it was 3.77/5.  According to Growing and Engaged Church, the author states that "parishes are by their very nature mission driven.  Because of their spiritual underpinnings, churches have more at stake than the financial bottom line.... While that is a worthy goal for business, churches have broader, more eternal goals that address the innate human need to be part of something bigger than mere existence.  That 'something bigger' is a sense of mission, and it should affect everything a parish does." The author concluded: "One of the key tasks of pastoral leadership is to bring the church's mission down to size so that individuals can find some connection between the church's values and their own."

FROM OUR PRINCIPAL –    JACK COREY

Dear Parishioners,

During the Lenten season our Student Council ran a penny challenge to raise money for Shoulder to Shoulder. While all the money is counted, we are still rolling pennies!  The Shoulder to Shoulder program can buy nearly-expired medications and supplies at a quarter of the cost and use them before they expire.  Two of our parishioners Drs. Lawrence and Jan Tepe, DDS go to Honduras to provide dental services in places where people have no other access to dental care.  The penny challenge raised almost $1,100.00 for this worthwhile program.

Just a reminder, today at 2:00 p.m., the fifth annual Rosary Rally will be held at Elder’s Pit.  Throughout May our students start the school day by praying the Rosary.  The rally would be a good opportunity for our students to see others from different parishes come together to pray the Rosary.  Even our younger students can pray along.  I hope you can make it.

FROM OUR SEMINARIAN

MATTHEW ROBBEN

Nothing happens by chance, but when I found 3 rosaries cleaning dorm rooms on my first day of work at Thomas More College, I didn’t think much about it. One rosary ended up hanging from my rear view mirror, one on my nightstand, and one stayed in my pocket. After all, you never know when you might need it. My prayer life was non-existent at the time, and my faith was little more than singing at Saturday evening Mass. After carrying the rosary in my pocket, and seeing the rosary in my car sway everyday for about two months, I finally decided to pray as I sat in traffic. The “Our Father” on the big beads and the “Hail Mary” on the small was all that I knew, but that was enough. The stress of my commute disappeared as Mary became my companion and guide. Today you have the opportunity to join Fr. Armstrong and myself as we gather at Elder High School at 2:00 pm to pray the rosary in support of pro-life efforts. I encourage you to let Mary be your companion and guide. I can attest that the results are life-altering and life- giving!

HOLY SPIRIT PRAYER GROUP

One of the blessings of reading and studying the Scriptures is the way that certain verses can give you encouragement, hope or comfort at difficult times in your life. Many of us have favorite selections from the Bible – perhaps, a Psalm, a parable story from one of the Gospels, or an Old Testament hero. Tuesday night, a few people will be prepared to share their favorite verses with us. Come and be refreshed by hearing how God’s Word has affected someone’s life. In Chapel, 7:30 PM on Tuesday.

STEWARDSHIP in Motion                    May 2010

The Month of May a month of celebrations and commemorations

Did you know that Bing Crosby recorded White Christmas in May of 1942?

On May 8th in 1886, Atlanta pharmacist Dr. John Styth Pemberton introduced syrup designed to relieve headaches. The “medicine” became known as Coca-Cola.

In 1987 Congress established May 1st, as Mother Goose Day to encourage the reading of these classic children’s rhymes.

Memorial Day observed on May 31 this is a time to remember and honor those who have given us this great gift of life, liberty and our pursuit of happiness.

Avoid the Summer Slump

Every summer the offering drops when parishioners are out of town for vacation, and for most folks, if we aren’t present at Mass, obviously we aren’t there to put our offertory in the basket. In the meantime, the bills and necessary expenses to carry on the parish ministry continue on during the summer and must be paid.  The solution?  You plan ahead for your vacation and make reservations and send deposits for your hotel and other accommodations. In the same way, consider electronic giving as a way To give to your parish whether you are on vacation or miss Mass due to poor weather or health. Then, whether you are vacationing or unable to attend Mass, you will know that the mission and ministry of the parish can continue unhindered. consider electronic giving as a way to give to your parish.

WHERE ARE YOU GOING?

Many youth in the parish will graduate from high school or college during May and June.  A question for all the graduates is: "Quo Vadis?" where are you going? The obvious answer is that you are going the same direction you were before graduation. A cap and gown doesn’t make any real difference in you. There are only two directions for life and two destinations. The way to Hell has both an express route and a longer, slower way. The express route is selfishness. The slower route is indifference, but it gets you to the same place. The way to Heaven is the way of love, the way of learning to care about others and about God. Love is the greatest thing in the world for "God is love."

We wish every graduate Godspeed in the right direction.

The Importance of a Last Will and Testament

Through your Last Will and Testament you can also help those deprived and less fortunate, to learn of God's infinite love and compassion by leaving a legacy through the Church. After considering your family and friends in your Will, why not think of leaving a gift to the family of the Church? It is a way of thanking God for the blessings you have

received during you life and a wonderful way of ensuring that the faith and values we cherish will be carried on in the future. How will your bequest help? Depending on your designation(s), you gift could be used to care for the aged; the poor and those in need of any kind; to provide for the formation and training of priests; to assist poor parishes; to extend special ministries and missions; or for any purpose which the Bishop in his discretion may think fit. Discuss these options with your financial advisor or those who assist you in these matters. Finally, keep your Will in a safe place and make sure your family and attorney know where to find it.
