Remember St. Antoninus in your will.

Both today’s first reading and Gospel remind us powerfully that every breath we take is a gift from God. How conscious am I of this first and most precious gift? Am I a good steward of the life and time with which I have been blessed?

FROM OUR PASTOR

As you read this, Matt Robben and I are in the Holy Land with three other seminarians, thanks to the generosity of a local foundation.  It is a privilege for us to walk in the footsteps of the Master.  I was blessed to be in the Holy Land as a seminarian thirty years ago.  I am anxious to see what has changed and what has remained the same.  I am anxious to experience it now from the perspective of being a priest for thirty years.  We all rely on your prayers for our safety.  We will celebrate the Solemnity of the Body and Blood of the Lord in the land where that profound offering first took place.

+
The following is the result of several telephone call and e-mails between Congressman Steve Driehaus and me.

I want to apologize publicly to Congressman Driehaus and his family for the hurt my inadvertence as publisher of our parish bulletin has caused them as a result of a recently published column dealing with health care legislation and pro-life issues.  In a telephone conversation with Congressman Driehaus, we agreed that the context – a church bulletin – does not afford him or any politician an opportunity to respond to statements with which he or she may agree or disagree as the case may be.  We also agreed that I would publish here Archbishop Schnurr’s remarks in the Presbyteral Council minutes following that vote: “The Chancery has been inundated with calls and emails about health care reform and the issue of Congressman Driehaus.  I had a conversation with him over the weekend, and while we do not necessarily agree on the approach that is being taken in Washington, it appears that the Congressman was doing the best he could in a very difficult situation.  He feels that the Executive Order, while not carrying the same weight as legislation, will put to rest the concerns about federal funding for abortions.  While I do not necessarily agree with his decision, I certainly believe that he struggled with his decision and he did not take the issue lightly.”

THE OBERAMMERGAU PASSION PLAY: See the Pentecost Tours brochures in the greeting room.  Should you call Pentecost Tours at (800)713-9800, please mention Fr. Armstrong's name.

MEASURING ENGAGEMENT 25: ME 20 "Aside from my family members, I have a best friend in my parish?"  Of the 566/625 parish respondents, 31% strongly agreed, 22% agreed, 14% neither agreed nor disagreed, 15% disagreed, and 18% strongly disagreed.  The mean average was 3.33/5; for all Catholics it was 3.08/5; for all denominations, it was 3.17/5.  According to Growing An Engaged Church, "everyone needs friendship...loneliness is the greatest problem of our time." "The environment is that in which there are many real genuine friendships. The author counsels: 1) don't try to make people be friends; 2) offer opportunities in which there is no agenda except relationship building; 3) establish small groups: "a parish is as strong as the relationships within it."

Were you married outside the Church?   Those seeking a convalidation of the marriage or an annulment of their marriage should call Deacon Bob Schroeder at 922-4759 to set up a confidential appointment.

THE PARISH LIBRARY is open every Sunday morning in the Holy Family Room of the undercroft

FROM OUR PRINCIPAL –    JACK COREY

At the end of the school year as we say goodbye to our eighth grade students for the final time, it is hard not to wonder what happens to these graduates when they go on to high school.  It is very rewarding when a parent of a former student informs us of the success one of our own is having in high school and beyond.

I was recently told of a number of our students who are leaders at Seton High School.  On the Student Council Executive Board, four out of the five members are St. Antoninus graduates.  They are President:  Jenna S.; Secretary:  Andrea B.; Treasurer:  Liza H.; and Pep President:  Lizzie K.

Additionally the senior class president is Casey R., the vice president is Mary L., and Marie F. is a senior homeroom representative.  The junior class president is Lauren U. and the sophomore representatives next year are Kelsey M., Katerina G., Sam R., and Jenna M.

Congratulations to you young women leaders; you have made St. Antoninus School very proud.

SAINT VINCENT DE PAUL SOCIETY

In today's Gospel, Jesus miraculously provides loaves and fishes for the multitude. Your St. Vincent de Paul Conference provides food for an increasingly growing number of families needing assistance. Your contribution placed in one of the poor boxes will help us satisfy the hunger and thirst of our clients.

Please take the Traveling Chalice into your home for one week as a reminder to pray for vocations to the priesthood and religious life. Call Debbie at 922-2414. Thank you to the Ken and Judy Rigney Family who took the Traveling Chalice into their home this week.

FROM OUR SEMINARIAN

MATTHEW ROBBEN

Recently, at dinner with my nephew at a local restaurant, we decided to sit outside near the kids play area so that we could enjoy the fresh summer air. Next to our table was a mother with three young children approximately 3, 5, and 7 years of age. The mother instructed the children in a foreign language and they happily ran off to play. As their laughter and excitement grew, we couldn’t help smiling and laughing out loud. The mother noticed our laughter and just smiled herself. What a precious God-given gift laughter can be! It transcends time, space, and nationality. It bonds, even if just for a moment, the hearts of two complete strangers. So don’t be afraid today to laugh and share the inexpressible joy of life. After all, we don’t need words to express the joy of the gift of laughter.

HOLY SPIRIT PRAYER GROUP

The book of Psalms is a wonderful resource for prayer to the Lord in whatever situation you find yourself. Many of the psalms were written out of deep affliction and sorrow. Often, we see where the hymns that we sing are taken from the book of psalms. Because of this, we can become so familiar with them that they lose their freshness and become mere words. On Tuesday, Mary Handermann will take Psalm 91 to delve into its deeper meaning and the richness of the imagery used there to touch our hearts and lives. Join us, Tuesday evening in Chapel 7:30 PM.
