FROM OUR PASTOR

On Sunday, August 1, I will celebrate my 30th anniversary of ordination as a priest. I have been thinking about those past years and have been full of gratitude for this great privilege of being called to the Priesthood of Jesus Christ. It has also made me think of an encounter I had with Fr. Gus Bernard in 1978 at St. Joseph's Parish in Springfield, OH. At that time Fr. Bernard was the oldest living priest of the Archdiocese. He entered Mt. St. Mary's Seminary in 1904 when that seminary was still in Price Hill. At the beginning of his first year in the seminary he met Archbishop Elder, who was to die on October 31, of that year. That fact alone made me want to meet him as I believe Archbishop Elder is a saint and I wanted to hear from a man who actually met him. Fr. Bernard told me along with then seminarian Mark Burger about his meeting with that saintly Archbishop and about his own years of serving the Lord and His Church. At the end he concluded: "Pray I don't defect, brothers, pray I don't defect!" That is my prayer and plea as well!

LEADERSHIP NIGHT is on Monday, August 30, 7:30-9:30 pm. The elected members of the Parish Council, Education Commission and Worship Commission, as well as the appointed members of the Finance Council, are expected to attend. Also, I expect all the volunteer organizations of the Parish (those listed on the front cover of the bulletin) to send their officers to this meeting. Leisa Anslinger will be our presenter for the next step on “Growing An Engaged Church”. I look forward to seeing all of you there.

A MODEL OF THE ROSARY MEMORIAL GARDEN is on display in the greeting room along with the brochures and order forms. Praying the Rosary in our forth-coming Rosary Memorial Garden will be a wonderful way to remember our beloved dead.

Please take the Traveling Chalice into your home for one week as a reminder to pray for vocations to the priesthood and religious life. Call Debbie at 922-2414. Thank you to Mark & Janene Cappel Family who took the Traveling Chalice into their home.

TRY ELECTRONIC FUNDS TRANSFER (EFT) through your bank. You can set up specific dates and withdrawal amounts.  Please call Steffany Reid, our Business Manager, at 922-5400, and she can help you get the EFT set up.

GUIDE BOOK & DIRECTORY ADVERTISING OPPORTUNITY

This book will be the Who, What, Where, When, Why and How of our parish.  The book is being provided at no cost to our parish.  Local businesses are now being solicited to advertise in the book.  If you own or manage a business and would like to find out about advertising in our book, please call the rectory office at 922-5400.

ATTENTION! Confirmation Candidates, Jr. High, High School and College students who require community service!

Saturday, August 21st: Habitat for Humanity Lunch for the Workers.  Meet in the undercroft at 10:45AM to prepare, help deliver and serve lunch.  Call Julie Heil at 922-3848 before Wednesday, August 18, to volunteer.

The Rite of Christian Initiation of Adults (RCIA) begins on Tuesday, September 14th, at 7:30pm in the Holy Family Room of the undercroft.  If you would like to attend, or if you know someone who would like to receive an invitation to become a Catholic, please call Deacon Bob Schroeder at 922-4759.

SAINT A WIDOWS

The date for the next get-together is Tuesday, August 17, at 5PM at Kenning’s Circle K Restaurant, 6616 Bridgetown Road (near Ebenezer).  This is our first dinner get-together.  Note the change of location from the Cabana to CIRCLE K.  All widows of the parish are welcome.  For reservations or questions, call Martha Reilly at 922-8136 or Rosemary Garmann at 922-2336.

WANT TO BE A MORE COMPASSIONATE PERSON?  Just Faith Program offers an intensive study of the Catholic Church’s social teaching and the Christian’s call to address the needs of the world.  The 30-week program includes weekly meetings, regular reading, retreats and immersion experiences. The program runs from September, 2010 to May, 2011.  For more information, please call Deacon Bob Schroeder at 922-4759.

THE PTO is looking for parish school families to be part of the Welcoming Committee to new school families for the 2010-2011 school year.  We need at least 30 families to assist with this project.  E-mail Julie Ormsbee at jormsbee@fuse.net to sign up by August 6.

SAINT VINCENT DE PAUL SOCIETY

In the Gospel, Jesus tells the parable about the rich man who selfishly stores all his grain and goods only to die and not enjoy his abundance anyway.  What we struggle all our lives to learn is that life does not consist of possessions or our perceived security, but of being possessed by God.

This week, as you give your gift to the Society of

St. Vincent de Paul to help the struggling poor, ask for the grace to be truly “possessed by God.”

This is the final weekend of the Christmas in July collection of food and household/Personal items for the Holy Family Food Pantry.  Thanks to all who have made this activity a success.

QUOTE  FROM NAT’L RIGHT TO LIFE

Yet another example of the ongoing flood of success stories with non-embryonic stem cells is that of 3 year old Alyssa Dupuis who suffered brain damage at birth that caused cerebral palsy.  Her parents decided to bank her umbilical cord blood which was recently given to Alyssa via stem cell transfusion.  Immediate positive results were seen and at last report this little girl, according to her mother, is “about 85% cured from cerebral palsy.
