Remember St. Antoninus in your will. + Am I waiting for the “right” time to become a good steward? Do I plan to share my time and talents “later?” Today’s Gospel warns those who are procrastinating about stewardship to be prepared, for, “at an hour you do not expect, the Son of Man will come.” +

On a recent Wednesday, I drove my Dad to St. Charles Center in Carthagena, Ohio, to see our former pastor, Fr. James O. Byrne. He will be 99 years old on August 28, and is currently the oldest living priest of the Archdiocese. Quite frankly, I love to be with him. He wears hearing aids and has a little trouble with his knees but his mind is clear and his heart is even purer. When we are together, we visit the Blessed Sacrament and I feel that each time he prays out loud in His Presence, it is an though he is speaking to our Lord Face to face. His love for the Holy Eucharist is more than admirable and is one of his many qualities I would love to imitate. During this month of August, which is devoted to the Holy Eucharist, (just as June is devoted to the Sacred Heart and July to His Precious Blood in popular piety) why not take some time to visit our Lord in the Blessed Sacrament? Each Friday, following the 8AM Mass, we have Exposition of the Blessed Sacrament until 10PM. The church opens daily at 6AM. As one parish church had it inscribed on an altar cloth beneath its Tabernacle, so we all need to be reminded: "The Master is here and is waiting for you."
LEADERSHIP NIGHT is on Monday, August 30, 7:30-9:30 pm. The elected members of the Parish Council, Education Commission and Worship Commission, as well as the appointed members of the Finance Council, are expected to attend. Also, I expect all the volunteer organizations of the Parish (those listed on the front cover of the bulletin) to send their officers to this meeting. Leisa Anslinger will be our presenter for the next step on “Growing An Engaged Church”. I look forward to seeing all of you there.
A MODEL OF THE ROSARY MEMORIAL GARDEN is on display in the greeting room along with the brochures and order forms. Praying the Rosary in our forth-coming Rosary Memorial Garden will be a wonderful way to remember our beloved dead.

In the last four years I have become a runner. Recently, I participated in the Burning River 100 mile Endurance Run. It is a 101.5 mile run in the Cuyahoga Valley National Park. When I first signed up my goal was just to see how far I could run not necessarily to finish. I told my friend, a veteran of 100 mile runs, that I would be disappointed at anything less than 60 miles but happy with 75. He told me if I was happy with 75, I would drop out at mile 75 or shortly thereafter. At that moment, I knew I had to run the whole 100. Driving up to the run with my sister (my race support crew and St. A. graduate) I expected to be with some of the most physically fit people I have ever met. But when I arrived in Cuyahoga Falls what I noticed most was how kind, how energetic, and how positive everyone was. I cannot remember being in a room where everyone was so positive. It was almost unnerving how much positive energy permeated the room. After dinner, my sister and I talked about how we both noticed the same thing. We also discussed one runner’s comment about no matter what happens in the run, replace any negative thoughts with positive ones and then I would finish. Through all the challenges, I knew finishing would trivialize any temporary suffering. During the run’s 26+ hours I thought about many things including how much better would my children do in school, and in life, if they could maintain the same attitude of positive perseverance found in these runners? I also thought about how St. Paul writes about running the race. What if we all adopted such an attitude? No matter what happens on our journey through life, we know getting to Heaven will make our temporary earthly sufferings trivial. What if we could send our kids to school and out to the world with this attitude? No one can run our race for us, yet we can all encourage each other along the way. The more we do this, the better our school and parish becomes. As the school year begins, I ask all of you to help create a school with an environment of positive resolve. If our students find this and make up their minds that this will be their greatest year yet, the results will be amazing. Thank you for all your prayers and support through this coming year.

HOLY SPIRIT PRAYER GROUP What do you do when you don’t know how to reach your destination? Most consult a road map. Well, did you know that God’s road map to heaven is Holy Scripture? On Tuesday, Judy Erwin’s talk “Reasons for Knowing Scripture” tells us that the answer is Jesus. All of Scripture from Genesis to Revelation points directly to Jesus. The Church teaches us that He is our truth, our hope, and our life. As we grow to know Him and love Him through Scripture, we are not so likely to hit detours. And hopefully, we’ll all reach that eternal destination that awaits us. So come and learn how to know and understand the signs He has given us. In Chapel, 7:30 PM. |
