Remember St. Antoninus in your will.

There is certain urgency in today’s Gospel as Jesus calls His first disciples - Andrew and Simon, James and John.  Each one follows Jesus immediately, unhesitatingly abandoning nets and boats and father and fellow-workers.  To what is Jesus calling me—at this moment, in these circumstances? What will I need to abandon in order to follow Him?

FROM OUR PASTOR

The following statement was issued by the United States Conference of Catholic Bishops: "On this day [1/23/12] following the anniversary of the Supreme Court decision, Roe v. Wade (1973), all dioceses of the United States shall observe a Day of Prayer for the Legal Protection of Unborn Children."   The Ordo suggests either the Mass "For Giving Thanks to God for the Gift of Human Life"  or "For the Preservation of Peace and Justice."  I must admit that I am more than a little distressed when a woman's pregnancy is described as "a bump," or that children are referred to as "rug rats,"  or when a recent survey stated that 60% of parents say a child has diminished their quality of life (interestingly, that same survey stated that 40% said it did not and that the larger the family the more contented the parents).  In any case it seems to me that is very easy to succumb to our culture of death.  Even subtle digs at human life demean all of us.  Take for example, the parable of the frog in boiling water.  If one puts a frog in a pot of boiling water, it jumps out; if one puts a frog in a pot of cold water and then slowly turns up the heat to a boil, the frog cooks to death.  Is that not the same with the culture of death?  Is it not easy to use common slang and images to demean life and miss their greater implications, namely, that we buy more and more of the lie that human life is just a huge inconvenience, "a bump,"  "a rug rat."   Rather, does not a human life have its own God-given dignity and eternal destiny?  Does it not deserve every legal protection we can give it?  Does it not deserve, at the very least, a Day of Prayer?

HOLY HOUR FOR LIFE - There will be a holy hour of adoration of the Blessed Sacrament to commemorate the fateful date of the infamous Supreme Court decisions that legalized abortion in the U. S.  Everyone is encouraged to come to the chapel on Sunday evening, Jan. 22, from 8 until 9 pm to pray that all unborn babies will be protected by law and that there be a renewed respect for all people from conception until natural death.

SAINT VINCENT DE PAUL SOCIETY

Next Sunday, January 29, is the fifth Sunday of the month – a time when we especially request your financial support for our charitable work.

Envelopes are in the pews for your contribution.  They can be placed in the collection basket next weekend or dropped off at the rectory.

This past year, the fifth Sunday contributions accounted for more than one sixth of our income.

We ask you to be generous once again.

40-HOURS DEVOTION –

LITURGICAL MINISTERS MEETING

On the weekend of February 3-5, 2012, we will observe 40 Hours of Adoration of the Blessed Sacrament.  Exposition begins after the 8:00am Mass on Friday, February 3rd, and concludes with a procession and Benediction with the Blessed Sacrament at the end of the 11:30 Mass on Sunday, February 5th.

All liturgical ministers (ushers, musicians, lectors, extraordinary ministers of Holy Communion, adult altar servers) are invited to attend a gathering on Saturday morning, February 4th.  We will attend the 8:00am Mass together and spend time before the Blessed Sacrament.  We will move to the undercroft at 9:00a.m. for coffee and donuts and a presentation by Mr. Andrew Cordonnier, our seminarian intern, and a very brief business meeting.  This meeting will end no later than 10:30am.

If you plan to attend, please contact Deacon Bob Schroeder at 922-4759 or via e-mail at w8cro@arrl.net.   It is important to let him know so that we may make adequate preparations.

The St. Antoninus Worship Commission is assembling a booklet of reflections on the daily Mass readings for the upcoming Easter season.  This booklet will be distributed to our parishioners.  We are asking for student (7th grade and older) and adult parishioners to write a short reflection on one of the Mass readings for one day of the Easter season.  Submissions should be a maximum of 250 words and are due at the end of February.  All submissions will be edited.  If you would like to write a reflection, contact Mary Meyer at 451-6332 or mkmeyer326@gmail.com for more information.  Writing a reflection for the booklet is a great way to be involved in parish life!

All widows of St. Antoninus Parish are welcome to attend the first 2012 luncheon at 12:30PM on Tuesday, January 31, at Chandler’s Restaurant, 6135 Cleves Warsaw Pike, near the Western Hills Retirement Village.  Food is individual choice and payment.  RSVP to Pat Frame at 922-8801 or Pat Hensler at 467-1024.

FROM MR. JACK COREY, PRINCIPAL

Dear Parishioners,

Next Sunday is the start of Catholic Schools Week.  St. Antoninus Parish School is hosting our Open House after the 11:30 Mass.  All are invited to come and see the great things that happen in our parish school.  Catholic Schools Week is a great opportunity to build community awareness of the work done in our parish school as well as in Catholic schools throughout the country.  Feel free to join us.  For prospective kindergarten and first grade families, we have a special early session from 9:30-11:00 a.m.  This extra opportunity gives our new kindergarten and first grade families time to ask teachers questions specifically geared towards new families’ needs.

This Sunday marks the Roe v. Wade decision.  Please take a moment to pray for all women faced with difficult pregnancies that they may realize every child is a gift from God.  Also pray for the end of all abortions.

FROM ANDREW CORDONNIER SEMINARIAN INTERN

Last time I talked about signing up for a 5k to promote vocations, thinking that it was only a one mile race…whoops!

As you read this, I am in our nation’s capitol for the March for Life.  I have gone every year that I have been able to, and feel very strongly about ending the travesty of abortion.  Please pray for me and the other pilgrims during this, the memorial of the Roe v. Wade Supreme Court decision.  I intend to go to the Vigil Mass for Life; you may see me on t.v.!

HOLY SPIRIT PRAYER GROUP

The parish of Saint Antoninus has been exceedingly blessed over several years to have young men assigned to this parish as seminarian interns.  They have certainly enriched us with their dedication, enthusiasm and service as they grow in their vocations.  Recently, it has been our pleasure to have Andrew Cordonnier assigned to us as our new intern.

Andrew will be our guest speaker on Tuesday evening at the Prayer Group.  He will share with us a little of his story and how his vocation to the priesthood came about.  You will want to hear how the Lord has worked in his life.  Please join us to listen to Andrew and to get to know him a little better.  In Chapel, 7:30 PM.

THE EDUCATION COMMISSION will meet on Monday, February 13, at 7:30 pm in the school conference room.  Please contact Mariellen Rechtin at trechtin@fuse.net if you have an agenda item to discuss.

St. Antoninus Science Fair, is open to all St. Antoninus 1st thru 8th grade parishioners, will be held on Sunday, April 1, 2012.  Go to the St. A website for details.

LIVING YOUR STRENGTHS

The women’s Living Your Strengths Journey has embarked on its journey of discovery!  We began on January 4.  Beginning a new journey group is always exciting.  Our first meeting is an evening of introducing ourselves and introducing the purpose of the group.  We have an overview of the Strengths Finder questionnaire, and we discuss the nature of talents and strengths.  During the week between the first and second meetings, each participant shares her signature themes with the group.  The most exciting part of a new journey for me as group co-facilitator is bringing together a dynamic group of women committed to spiritual growth.  When women of faith gather in a group and talk about their faith, the energy flows!  This particular journey group is composed mostly of women who have been parishioners for many years and represent various ministries within our parish.  This group is also welcoming a friend of one of the group members who is not a member of our parish and who is not Catholic.  We are so happy to have her on this journey with us, and we feel as if we have known her for a long time!  It may seem odd that women who are already active in various ministries are interested in discovering their strengths and talents.  They do make however new discoveries!  After taking the Strengths Finder, the things that they have naturally been doing well now have names and will have new meaning for them.  They will understand their talents at a much deeper level while at the same time, deepening their commitment to answer God’s call and in fact, taking their relationship with the Lord to a new level.  As the first reading at Mass last weekend urged us to respond “Speak Lord, your servant is listening”!  And so the journey has begun!
