Mission

Girl Scouting builds girls of courage, confidence, and character,

who make the world a better place.

The Girl Scout Law
I will do my best to be:
Honest and fair,
Friendly and helpful,
Considerate and caring,
Courageous and strong, and
Responsible for what
I say and do,
And to
Respect myself and others,
respect authority,
use resources wisely,
make the world a better place, and
be a sister to every Girl Scout.

The Girl Scout Promise
On my honor, I will try:
To serve God and my country,
To help people at all times,
And to live by the Girl Scout Law.

  • Girls use their knowledge and skills to explore the world.

  • Girls care about, inspire, and team with others locally and globally.

  • Girls act to make their world a better place.

Girl Scouting and the U.S. Catholic Church

article from the Archdiocese of Cincinnati Clergy Communications

Recently from various sources there have been multiple allegations both locally and nationally that the Girl Scouts are engaged in practices contrary to Catholic teaching. For the past weeks, the OYYAM has been reviewing these allegations to determine if any of them has basis in fact. To date we have absolutely no knowledge of any such problematic practices here in the Archdiocese, and we have been assured by the Girl Scouts of Western Ohio that the allegations are false. (Below, please see the two documents from the Girl Scouts of Western Ohio that directly address and refute the accusations.) Moreover, leaders of the National Federation for Catholic Youth Ministry (NFCYM) are looking into these accusations at the national level, and they are meeting on November 3 with the leaders of Girl Scouts USA in Washington, D.C. for this purpose. If we learn anything further from that meeting we will pass it along.

Here in the Archdiocese the Girl Scouts has been our partner in good standing for many, many decades, and we are grateful for all they do for thousands of Catholic young women each year. We are grateful as well for the hundreds of Catholic men and women who generously volunteer in Girl Scouting. Some of those volunteers serve on our Catholic Committees on Girl Scouting, under the auspices of the Archdiocesan Office of Youth & Young Adult Ministry, and together we proudly sponsor the Catholic religious recognitions (Marian Medal, Family of God, etc.). These religious recognitions are in turn supported by the Girl Scouts of Western Ohio, who also support the religious recognitions of many denominations and faiths (please see http://www.praypub.org/recognitions/girlscout.htm). If you have any questions, please contact the OYYAM.
