3rd Quarter Letter

January 25, 2008

Dear Second Grade Families,

Welcome to the New Year and the start of the Third Quarter!  It’s hard to believe we are now officially halfway through the 2007-2008 school year.  The personal and academic growth of the students has been quite impressive.  We hope to see forward strides as the children continue to make progress in these areas.

Along with a New Year comes an increased level of responsibility for our Second Graders.  Did you realize that your child is now closer to being a Third Grader than a First Grader?  They sure do!  They are ready!  We are now moving away from review and into newer material.  The children will take on more challenging math concepts as well as more demanding spelling/phonetic patterns.  Classroom rules and behavior/academic expectations are in full swing.   Which means…less warnings and stricter enforcement.  The following is a glance into the Third Quarter:

  • RELIGION   The 3rd Quarter Religion classes move toward the Spring reception of First Eucharist.  With this in mind, our attention will be on Prayer, the Liturgy of the Word, the Liturgy of the Eucharist and the KIDs’ place in the Church as they take steps to their rightful place at the Table of the Lord.  Included in this instruction will be a concentration on the Liturgical seasons of the Church; namely, the season of Lent, then the Celebration of Easter.  As with the Sacrament of Reconciliation, each Parent or Guardian is encouraged to attend a Parents’ Meeting in April and to watch for letters coming home as the immediate preparation for the Sacrament of First Eucharist takes place.

  • LANGUAGE ARTS   We will add to our foundation of short/long vowel sounds this quarter with the study of vowel pairs and diphthongs.  In addition, we will look at the spelling changes that occur when comparative (-er, -est) and inflected (-ed, -ing, etc.) endings are added to a word.  Emphasis will also be placed on the formation and use of contractions and possessives.  We will continue to expand our experiences with books as we complete book activities and focus on different book types.  Check out this website that goes along with our Language Arts series:  www.sfreading.com  -  great supplements and activities!

  • MATH   Classroom emphasis has now shifted away from addition/subtraction.  Yet these basic facts still remain as the foundation and daily practice is a must!  The students have started on the subtraction time tests.  Keep up the good work and those scores will continue to improve!  This quarter will continue our exploration of numbers 1-100 and place value, as well as geometry, graphing, and money.

  • SOCIAL STUDIES   Unit 3 “A Story About History”  We will be discussing our country’s past—from America’s 1st People to our Westward Pioneers.

  • SCIENCE   In our next unit, we will learn about germs and how our bodies defend themselves.  We’ll find ways to reduce our chances of becoming sick and discuss healthy decision-making.  Also in this quarter, we will begin our investigation of light, color, and magnets.

With your continued support, we will make this next half of the year as successful and productive as the first part.  together we can work to assure that your child feels happy, loved and successful.  If you trust us to love your child and help them during the day, we will trust that you are doing the same at home.  You are your child’s first and best teacher.  We are here to assist.  Let’s work Together for children

Sincerely,

THE SECOND GRADE TEACHERS
