Mrs. Baldwin's 6th Grade Classroom Plan

Dear 6th Grade Parents/Guardians and Students,                                                   August, 2007

Welcome to the beginning of a new school year.  In order to guarantee your child and all the students in the classroom the excellent educational climate they deserve, I am utilizing the following classroom plan:

CLASSROOM DISCIPLINE:

  • Raise hand to speak and wait to be called upon.

  • Demonstrate responsible and respectable behavior to others in the classroom and at other places.

  • Be positive in all that you do.

If a student chooses to break the rules, the following consequences will occur:

L     A verbal warning will be given.

L     If a second warning is given, the result will be demerits issued.

L     Any more warnings will result in more demerits, a phone call to parents, and/or sent to the principal.

HOMEWORK AND CLASSROOM POLICY:

ü      Be prepared for class (books, paper, pencils, pens, and assignments) and ready on time.

ü      All assignments are to be given the student’s best effort.  Messy work will be returned to the student to be completed again and then will be graded.

ü      Assignments are due on the day assigned.  Assignments are considered late if not complete and in the classroom when requested.  Students will be asked to sign their name in my missing homework binder to keep track of incomplete/missing assignments.

ü      Students are given three days to turn in missing work.  He/She will incur a ten point reduction on the grade for each day until work is received.  Assignments will not be accepted for a grade after the three days and will be recorded as a zero.

ü      Any student with at least 2 late, incomplete or missing assignments in a subject will receive a check mark on the quarterly report card.

GRADING CRITERIA:

            Math:                                                                          Religion:

            Tests--50 %         Assignments--15 %                          Classwork--50 %

            Quizzes--25 %    Project--10 %                                  Tests--50 %

All tests and most quizzes will be announced at least three days in advance.  Math projects (one per quarter) will be given ample time in class to begin and most work will be done in class.  All student work for math should be kept in their binder until the end of the quarter which we will clean out at school.  Students are required to maintain a “grade sheet” for my classes.  This will list all grades earned in the quarter.  Parents are asked to monitor and sign this at various times during the quarter.

It is in your child’s best interest that we work together with regard to his/her education and development.  I will try to keep you informed about your child’s progress, academically and/or behaviorally, in my class by the use of interim reports, “grade sheet” and other means.  If there is a legitimate reason why your child is unable to finish their homework, please send a note on the day the assignment is due stating the reason.

I have discussed this plan with your child, but would appreciate it if you would review the plan with him/her before signing and returning only the bottom portion to me.  Any questions or concerns, I can be reached at school or by email Baldwin@saintantoninus.org . Thank you for your help and support.

Sincerely,

Michelle Baldwin                      Please cut and return just the bottom portion.

Mrs. Baldwin's 4th Quarter Letter

April 2, 2008

Dear Parents/Guardians,

For the 4th quarter in religion, we will complete a few chapters in our textbook about the Church, the People of God, and Mary.  You will soon receive a letter that outlines the topics that will be discussed for the Family Life program that will begin at the end of April.  I have asked Mr. Schroeder and Mr. Nie to help introduce some of the topics when needed.  Please sign and return that letter so I can begin the program.

With all the interruptions to the school with delays and snow days, we did not get to finish chapter 7 in math for the third quarter.  We will pick up with that chapter then move on to chapter 9 and 10 on geometry.  The students will be given a protractor and Safe-T compass for class so no need to purchase one for them.  I hope to finish out the year completing work with probability and solving equations.  Our project for this quarter will focus on geometric shapes and using the compass.

Your children have been doing a great job at maintaining their grade sheets and again this quarter you can monitor them at your convenience.  If you want to know how they are doing, ask to see their grade sheets or their PDA where it will be stored.

As always, if you have any concerns or questions, please call or email me (baldwin@saintantoninus.org).

Sincerely,

Michelle Baldwin

Mrs. Dwyer's 4th Quarter Letter

Dear Parents,

It is hard to believe the final quarter of the year is upon us. Where has the time gone? The students have been working very hard and we have accomplished a lot so far this year. We have finished the novel Where The Red Fern Grows and the students really enjoyed the story. Our class discussions were great and I am very pleased with the growth in their ability to talk about literature. We will read at least two more novels before the end of the year. This means that, along with book report books, the students will have studied fourteen novels this school year. This is addition to finishing the Anthology and reading extra books for pleasure. Wow!

The students are writing an essay of compare and contrast based on the dogs in Where The Red Fern Grows. This is due April 7th. They will also write a legend this quarter. Idioms will be studied and there will be two tests, April 17th and May 21st. We will explore the poetry of Langston Hughes, Robert Frost and Longfellow. We will discuss the use of extended metaphor in poetry and music lyrics. A book report based on the literary device of personification will be due towards the end of May. The students will write a dialogue between two animal characters and create puppets for a class performance.

With the end of the year looming before us, we will all struggle with staying focused and finishing strong. I need your help reminding the students that the material covered in May is just as important as the material taught in September. Thank you for the support you have given the students and me this year. We are having a great time together.

Sincerely,

Kathleen Dwyer
