Mrs. Heisel's 4th Quarter Letter

Dear Parents,

It does not seem possible that the 4th quarter is already upon us. Here are some things we will be working on as we finish up this school year.

7th Grade Math – We are finishing up our Geometry unit and will begin discussing integers. After we have a good sense of positive and negative numbers, we will do some graphing on the coordinate plane. From there we will transition into solving equations and inequalities. Students will be needing graph paper.

8th Grade Math will be ending the year with a lot of algebra. We have been evaluating expressions and solving equations. We will also graph linear functions and quadratic functions, as well as, explore polynomials.

8th Grade Algebra – We begin this quarter solving and graphing inequalities. The next topic we’ll discuss will be polynomials, and hopefully we’ll get as far as factoring trinomials.

8th Grade Reading – Plans changed somewhat as to what I wanted to do 3rd quarter. Mr. Besse was discussing WWII in social studies, so I decided to go ahead with my Holocaust unit instead of doing our reading groups. I am hoping to still get to those groups (“our book club” as I mentioned in last quarter’s letter). In the meantime, we’re reading The Giver, in which we’re having some great discussions. Mrs. Obermeyer is also collaborating with us as we read this book, and bringing some great moral discussions into religion class. One other important topic we’ll cover before the end of the year is poetry.

So much is going on this quarter, especially for 8th grade – field trips, spring show, Washington DC, etc…. The end of the year will be here before we know it, but there is still a lot of work to be done! My expectations for studying, homework, and behavior are higher than ever! Please encourage your child(ren) to put forth their best effort this last quarter.

As always, if you ever have any questions or concerns, please do not hesitate to contact me. I can be reached by email, heisel@saintantoninus.org, or you can call the school office and leave a message for me, 922-2500. I will do my best to get back to you as soon as possible. Thank you for making my first year here at St. Antoninus so wonderful!

Sincerely,

Mrs. Angie Heisel

RELIGION HIGHLIGHTS FOR HOME

GRADE 8 - FOURTH QUARTER

Always give yourselves fully to the work of the Lord,

Because you know that your labor in the Lord is not in vain.

1Corinthians 10:31

Dear Parents,

As we approach the last weeks of the school year, we will be working very hard to complete the last few chapters in our study of the New Testament.  Studying the miracles and parables of Jesus will fill most of the fourth quarter.

As always, I will be giving a Religion exam that will cover everything we have studied this year.  The students will be given a study guide to use to prepare for this exam.  If the work on this guide is done well, and studied well, success can be fairly certain.

Sincerely,

Jan Obermeyer

Mrs. Obermeyer's 4th Quarter English Letter

English Highlights

Spelling

For spelling in the fourth quarter, the students will be studying from a list of most often misspelled words that I will give them each week.  The written test will be on Fridays.

English Grammar

During the fourth quarter the students will study pronouns, adjectives, and adverbs.  All of this material should be mastered by completion of eighth grade.  There will also be a writing assignment that will relate to The Giver that they are reading in Reading class and several other writing pieces to add to their portfolio. The students will be bringing home at the end of the school year their portfolio containing the writing they have done this year. They are very proud of their extensive work!

Thanks in advance for any help you can give to keep your son/daughter focused during these last weeks of school.  I fully intend to keep business as usual.  I would also like to take this opportunity to thank you for the privilege of sharing our faith with your children.  It's been a wonderful two years.

Sincerely,

Jan Obermeyer

Third Quarter Newsletter

8th Grade Social Studies

The students will not be required to do the World War Two scrapbook project this year.  An interview with a war veteran of any U.S. conflict will be assigned.   Details of this long-term assignment will be coming in the next week.  The first week of March will probably be the due date.  We will continue to cover World War II and the Cold War period during this 3rd quarter.  Hopefully, we will start Ohio History by the beginning of the final quarter.
