FROM OUR PASTOR

Dear Parishioners,
On Saturday, May 31, about 150 people met to hear how  Planned  Parenthood has purchased a medical facility to perpetrate their practices and "slay the souls of our youth" by encouraging irresponsible and uninhibited sexual mores.  They mock the fundamental God -given meaning of sex between one man and one woman in a permanent love-sharing/life-giving union.  When Planned Parenthood conducted a survey in the 1990s to find out what was the most effective birth control among teenagers, what they discovered was not to their liking.  That survey revealed that weekly church attendance, first and foremost, and high parental involvement were for teens the most effective means of preventing sex outside of marriage. Therefore, I urge you to read and act on Jane Hoffman's column published in this bulletin about STOPP.  I urge you to see to it that your children practice their faith.  May Michael the Archangel defend us in this battle for the souls of our youth.

Rev. Christopher R. Armstrong

OUR SUNDAY ENVELOPE COMPANY has informed us that the envelope order for June did not arrive at our local post office as scheduled.  They have re-printed envelopes for the entire parish and had them delivered directly to our local post office last Saturday.  All parishioners should have received envelopes this week.  Because the original order was mailed 3rd class, it will more than likely be delivered a bit late with the result that parishioners could end up with two sets.  If a second set arrives, please discard it.

A NOTE FROM

DEACON DAVID ENDRES

As the summer vacation begins, you might be wondering – “What will Deacon Endres do on his summer vacation?”  While I will continue in residence at St. Antoninus through the end of August, I will be making two pilgrimages this summer.  The first, in June will be a seminary-sponsored trip to the Holy Land with my classmates.  We will see such notable sites as Nazareth, Bethlehem, Jerusalem, the Mount of Olives, Capernaum, Cana, the Jordan River and the Dead Sea.  It should be a wonderful opportunity to visit the places that figured somewhat prominently in the life of our Lord.  The second pilgrimage will be a trip in July to World Youth Day in Sydney, Australia with St. Jude parish.  There we will have an opportunity to pray with Pope Benedict and Catholic young people throughout the world.  I hope to share some of my reflections from these pilgrimages in the weeks ahead.

FOR THE SUMMER FESTIVAL, both Booth Chairpersons and Booth Workers are needed.  A Booth Worker is one who can work a two-three hours shift.  A Booth Chairperson is responsible for staffing a booth and coordinating the activities of that booth. To volunteer call Bonnie Sohngen 922-2192, Alex Hawk 467-6355, Mike Rolfes 451-6704 or Todd Logan 922-1782.

FESTIVAL BID-N-BUY BOOTH still needs items.  Not sure what to donate...call Cara Hester at 347-0545.  We appreciate anything you can do!  Thank you to those parishioners and businesses who have already donated!

Spiritual Fruitfulness: Reflections on the Gifts of the Holy Spirit

The Gift of Right Judgment/Counsel

Gift of the Fear of the Lord

You have probably heard of the phrase “Catholic guilt” (often used by people who have left the Church) to describe feelings of remorse, shame or self-doubt caused by the faith.  When the phrase is used it almost always used in a negative way as if following the teachings of the Church, especially its moral teachings, results in psychological damage.  Yet we know that the true damage to the person results not from the Church’s teaching but from a distancing from Jesus and His Church.

Tonight we are going to reflect on the Spirit’s gift of fear of the Lord – something that many would probably incorrectly label as a form of “Catholic guilt.”  The reason this gift is sometimes misunderstood is because of the word “fear.”   Fear can mean a fear of punishment. But fear can also be a fear of losing God, allowing ourselves to become distant from Him.

We need to understand fear of the Lord in this way.  A genuine relationship with God is based on love, not fear. Therefore, this "fear of the Lord" is a reverential fear that moves a person to do God's will and avoid sin because of love for God.  In short, fear of the Lord means to have a dread of sin and fear offending God.  This is certainly a good kind of fear.

Think back to your youth – perhaps your teenage years.  Were you ever afraid to tell your parents something?  Perhaps you wrecked the family car or you failed an exam or broke a family heirloom.  Perhaps you were afraid of disappointing your parents and were worried that they would think less of you.  Is this kind of fear altogether bad?  Of course, not, because it is based on a relationship and fear of damaging that relationship.  What if there was no regret, no remorse, no shame for getting in car accidents, failing courses or damaging items?

This is a little like our fear of the Lord.  Because we recognize that the Lord loves us and we love him, we fear offending him.  We want more than anything else to be in relationship with God and fear harming our relationship with Him.

Only that which we really love, do we fear losing.  Think about the fear that comes with losing a child, even for a brief moment, in a crowd.  Or the fear that accompanies illness, when we fear the loss of someone we love.  When we examine our fears, only then we will see that which we really love.

When I think of a healthy fear of the Lord, I am reminded of the words of Jesus in the Gospels: “What does it profit a man to gain the whole world and lose his own soul?” (Matthew 16:26; Mark 8:36).  For Jesus, true and holy fear is a fear of losing – losing God and eternal life with Him.

Let us pray for a healthy fear, not a paranoid or phobic form of fear, so that we come to know that the more we love God, the more we will fear being separated from Him.  For us the fear of the Lord should not be marked by anxiety or terror, but rather a resolve to avoid sin and do the will of God.  Then our lives will not be filled with guilt or shame or fear but by the tranquility that comes from being in love with God.

Dear Fellow Parishioners,

“They’re coming for your children…and they don’t want you.”  Who?  Planned Parenthood.  Let’s be clear.  They are not, nor have they ever been, some benign health clinic for poor women! Planned Parenthood continues to target children and the minority community (www.youtube.com/watch?v=zwifOVMW3c4&feature=related ).  Planned Parenthood deceptively sneaks into communities near schools to gain access to our young.  Their tactics continue to target children and the minority community. This time in Cincinnati, under the guise of Mt. Auburn Parking LLC, Planned Parenthood purchased a medical building on Ferguson Rd., within several hundred yards of a large public high school and in close proximity to 3 parochial high schools and numerous middle and grade schools.

Many parents know that Planned Parenthood operates the largest abortion chain across America.  Some parents do not know that the murder of an unborn child in abortion is “legal” in America for all nine months.  All nine months!  One out of every four children who die in abortion does so at a Planned Parenthood facility.  PP has killed over four million innocent human beings through abortion. In 2006-2007, PP killed 289, 750 pre-born babies.

With two local pending lawsuits against Planned Parenthood, alleging that predatory activity of unreported child rape and incest was protected inside PP’s facility, there is no reason to allow PP to expand their sordid business practices into a larger facility so close to schools!  Sexual predators are not allowed near school…neither should those businesses that harbor and protect the identities of Sexual Predators who bring minor girls in for abortions and birth control (to continue to rape).  An 11 year old girl can go into PP and be put on dangerous prescription drugs that have killed others, and she can do so without her parents’ knowledge or their consent.

Keep Planned Parenthood away from our children.  Be a part of our local community efforts:  www.ProtectCincinnati.org Info 513-728-7870 (Right to Life of Cinti.) Learn more about PP at www.ALL.org/STOPP Read Humanist Manifesto I and II. www.ProtectingBlackLife.org Let us be hopeful:  “And looking upon them, Jesus said, ‘With men this is impossible, but with God all things are possible.’” (Matt 19:26)

HOLY SPIRIT PRAYER GROUP

On Tuesday, Judy Erwin is going to give us an interesting look at the Apostles. Who were they? How did they relate to Jesus? Can we put ourselves in their shoes and see ourselves in their circumstances? Let’s imagine that we were there. What role did Mary play in their lives at Pentecost and later? She is called “Queen of Apostles.” Can we imagine why? Sounds intriguing. In Chapel, at 7:30 PM.

ST. TERESA OF AVILA CHURCH will hold its monthly “Decree on Child Protection” class at 7PM, July 10th, in their church undercroft.  However, because of vacations, no evening fingerprinting will be offered.
